A merc in no way affected my gameplay. I did not get bored, I was constantly aware when I played, especially hardcore games. In no way was I more laid back with a merc. And yes, 1 merc is fine.
In the game play video there seemed to be the possibility to have several "helpers" (I know they weren't mercs) so there seems to be a system for having other than your main character in a party...
If it is possible to bring more than one merc, I hope there will be a penalty like they take X% gold, every Y item or a Z% reduction in XP.
I do hope they keep the merc it's a great thing for SP
Edit:
I think it was in Never Winter Nights 2 that the AI of the mercs where poorly developed so they often got themselves killed, this was also the case in DII but there you weren't as dependent on the merc...
I dont know if this was addressed already or not. I absolutely do not want to see a penalty on your drops for having said merc at your side. This is not Guild Wars and its one of the "features" i absolutely hated with GW. You were forced to play with a team instead of mercs (They were very stupid and 90% of quests were hard to complete with them). Often found myself standing for hours at a time trying to get a team to do that ONE quest.:offtopic:
Sorry about that, back OT.
Everyone that has even touched diablo knows it is BIG on magicfinding/item hunting w/e you wanna call it. To make a merc thats supposed to "help" your character have an edge take your drops in diablo would render them unused by 99% of the diablo population later in the game. To put them into the game and make them steal your drops would make this system utterly useless in D3.

Same here! I hate that force group feature. Standing around for four hours typing LFG isn't my idea of fun!

Good if they would be unused. They should make the characters powerful enough to manage on their own. What point is for horrify and such skills if there is a merc that tanks everything anyways. So no thanks for that kind of merc system that it is now.
it would be interesting if you could customize your mercs skills too. Maybe you could have a few choices, like for a fighter type, you could either put points into passive skills like evade etc to make it more of a tank, or make it more offensive oriented.

I have to agree with you there. However, I didnt say that the merc system was fine the way it was...improvements definately need to be made. The current system is lame there is no doubt about that but the fact that the guy i quoted basically took that stuff right off of guild wars (a game i hate)...I would take diablo's broken down merc system over it any day. Not a biggy though because if they did do something to that nature I would just not use a merc.
I love the item finding aspect of diablo and anything that hinders on that would hinder the gameplay itself to the core IMO. Sadly I cant think of any suggestions to mend the many issues of the current system atm. I just dont want a loot theiving monkey for a merc following me around. I gotta say though the one thing i truely loved about diablo 2's merc system was the auras, that in itself made him extremely useful to all characters ESPECIALLY later in the game in hell difficulty.

I think Mercs should be for single player only. Don't want everyone to essentialy be a pet class. Its definatly great for single player to have some AI company. There should be no use for mercs when you are playing with 4 or so other people.
I'm doing that and I don't need a merc. So if you wanna play solo you better be good enough for that.
Can't expect for some low level to manage in hell, he needs to go back to easier areas to gain some levels then come back and try the harder.
One of the biggest need for mercs in d2 was immunities. Without those you wouldn't need them as much. Since building a dual or tri tree sorc yeah you can kill all monsters but not that fast. Also now with the ridiculous runewords everyone wants one ofc. U can actually wear off many immunities with merc conv aura

I've never had one get rid of cold or fire, lighting yes. But it also has a -50somethingish% enemy lightning resistance which probably is the deciding factor for that.

Maybe if the changed it so that the Merc. element depend on the equipments.
So you can use them as bait.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Merc. should be unique and not just a lesser copy of your characters.
And this time around, we can actually manage their skill/stat point as they level up (as long as they're your merc).
In fact, its would be even better if we can set up a template of skill they should use. And when a situation need, we just switch it on the fly.
So you have to do certain quest to enable your ability to hire different kind of merc.
Sort of like the Cube in D2, you have to do the quest to get that cube.

But anyways, I don't really care whether or not mercs are back.
