I agree.
But not to sound like an asshole, couldn't you post it in on the other graphic thread? now ppl will post - again?@!? its only alpha stage with 5-10 min gameplay footage
DUnno the dark places just forced me to navigate with the map rather than the game itself because it was sometimes hard to see some doors etc. Maybe there should be such things in dungeons or something. But the light effects in d2 wasn't so great or realistic. Like that brazier there it should really light up a bigger area.
That's not to say they can't work on it. But IMO that's one of the main things that made D2s dungeons etc scary
I know many of you are paying a lot of attention to the way the environment is a little brighter and more colourful than necessary, not setting the correct mood. But have you checked out some of the character design?
In particular I am concerned about the SHAPE, COLOUR, TEXTURE, SIZE, and DETAIL of the armor.
If you take a close look at the "gothic plate" that drops from the chest for the barbarian during the gameplay video, (or this, http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c238/ShroudOfEscape/lawl.jpg ) it doesn't look anything like gothic plate... or any kind of plate for that matter.
-The colour: It's green... what?
-The shape/size: A little too large. A little too "chunky".. remeniscent of WoW-style.
-The detail: It's overdone. There are already spikes, there's no need for multiple ridges surrounded by poorly drawn/blurry details around it. The armor just looks crowded.
-The TEXTURE: This is the biggest one for me. MAKE METAL SHINE A BIT. You can't even tell what kind of material he is wearing because there is absolutely no reflection. He could be wearing cloth over cardboard, painted wood, plastic, or even playdough for all you know.
As another small example, take a look at the Dark Cultist page here.
Compare the concept art pictures, which is quite good in my opinion, to the actual in game design. He looks vastly different in-game, and it's not for the better. It's not even for the sake of cutting down on detail or work.
Concept art: The cultist is wearing faded purple robes with some gray parts. There is some dull silver/whitish metal(?) hanging down the center and back. Little bit of white accent here and there.
In-game art: The cultist is wearing faded purple robes as above. The robes also have large parts of dark and light green, dark and light yellow, and sky blue stripes on his left arm. On his right arm, he has some kind of oversized, overdetailed, colourful gauntlet with things protruding from it. What the hell is this? I could swear to God that I was looking at a WoW undead warlock. He looks more like a painted EASTER EGG than a Dark Cultist.
I REALLY hope the artists stray from this ridiculous looking WoW art and go back to the basics we had in Diablo and Diablo II, with updated graphics. UPDATE things, do not radically change them into something else. They have enough time that they could make some changes to this stuff, so don't give up on it. They also have the talent to make this game look awesome, I believe. We just have to let them know what we like, and what we don't. Hopefully they'll take it into consideration.
In WoW, everything looks like garbage. Everyone knows it's oversized and and mismatched colour-wise. I'm not sure how many people notice this, but there's also a huge problem of there being almost no reflection on most metal items in that game. You cannot tell the difference between leather and plate aside from shape of most items.
I want smooth, reflective plates of metal, at least in some places. I want chainmail that has at least a slight sparkle to it when you're in the light. I want armor that is SLIGHTLY realistic and cool looking. I want armor that doesn't look crowded and overdetailed. I want armor that isn't TOO COLOURFUL. I want to be able to know what I'm wearing in more ways than just by hovering over the item and seeing the name "gothic plate"
Please, don't let this turn into WoW2 where art is concerned. It can be improved; Blizzard has the tools and the talent.
Okay, Im getting sick of all these "buaaaaa, teh grafix suX!!11" posts. Gameplay>graphics any day. Why do you think people still play DII? Hell, Ive even played Colonization, Canon Fodder, Dune 2 and Master of Magic just recently.
Personally I think the game looks awesome. I hope that there is some really sinistar music to back it up.
Regarding the light radius question. Yes, it would be sweet to have a light radius, but come on the game is prolly not more than 30-40% percent finished... It wouldn't be a problem to add a dark area around your char.
Stop these whinning post. We have hardly seen any of the game yet and already people start complaining.
I agree.

Yeah, think I should post my first post in the graphics thread then let this one die?
Also yeah it's only alpha, but that just means it could go either way, having topics like this etc show what we want etc and Blizz may take that into consideration
Don't you all think that there should be something implemented such as light radius. That's what I think gave Diablo 2 a really frightening feeling in dungeons etc, not knowing where the enemies are, not knowing what they are until they are right on top of you?
TBH I think the best way to fix the graphics would be to take out this green/blue tone throughout the game, slightly make the graphics more gritty/sharp and reduce saturation, this combined with the light radius, or similar effect, would add a really eery vibe. This wouldn't change the graphics drastically at all, just make it better.
I have yet to see many people mention this, all I see is saturation etc etc DARKEN DARKEN, I think it needs to be to a degree, but tbh Light radius did wonders for d2.
I completely agree and can't believe I didn't think of this lighting radius that was implemented in D2. It's not neccesarily realistic, but adds a nice touch and except Diablo2 and Lod I haven't seen a game that has this in the exact same fashion. Light sources in other games light everything around like a bulb, In diablo it only slightly threw lighting on the surface it came close to and left everything else in a strange form of darkness which doesn't go side by side with the laws of physics, but I liked the effect it produced nonetheless.
It was especially eye candy while moving in nightime through a lot of columns, trees etc. Could have been an oversight or somekind of bug.
I can remember I also shifted through the perspetive to be able to compare the difference it had on the rendering engine.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees

I don't think the graphics suck at all, I just think they don't fit in greatly with the Diablo world. I dunno, I know it may seem annoying but for a lot of people it's not a game, it's THE game and people really want BLizzard to do the right thing with this. If people are concerned, sure they should speak their minds, that's what forums are for.
I want the light radius in darkly lit environments but the levels shown in the demo were obviously made to be like that so they could show off the game and let people actually see everything.

Exactly. I would say it's not realistic in our world, but in the Diablo world I would imagine it is.
I don't know much Macedonijan. But I know a little.

I sure hope you're right. But I don't understand why they wouldn't add light radius into the demo I mean, Diablo is a horror hack n slash (IMO) so I don't see why they wouldn't show all that the game represents.
A person cant post links until at least 10 post count
Good point about the texture of armor, shinyness etc
But when it comes to the large size and chunkyness of the armor, I think thats part of Blizzards new take on Diablo
"Stylization over Realism" and "Big things give you an Epic feel" where 2 bullet points in the art and lore panel presentation at wwi08
Remember, so far Diablo 3 is pre-pre-pre-pre-pre alpha
Jeez you saw a few bits and jumped to those conclusions, some of the armor in wow is great by the way, thats probably one of the things in that game I actually like in end game, it doesn't all have to be the tin man approach.
And I think you should go play NWN2, the way your describing armor makes me think your playing the wrong game, blizzards approaching this with style over realism.
I just topped the gamma level so I saw everything nicely.. was pain in the ass to play at summer sometimes when sun was shining behind me and couldn't see a thing.
I don't understand how the character creates the light without torch or something. The light source should come from enviroment.. some places are darker than others. Real light sources bring more atmosphere with the shadows and all. Night time could be darker but maybe with some moon light so that you could actually see something at least..

Light radius pissed me off. Diablo I never had it and it was great without. I usually ended up just looking at the automap 90% of the time because the ends of walls are not visible and I usually try to cover whole areas... I think this feature only hurts gameplay. Varying light sources and the effects they cast on the map are more interesting than the whole dungeon being dark with the exception of your character. In fact, if your character didn't have any + light source items, everything would be pitch black, realistically. I'd rather have a bit of a greyish scheme with lighter areas from torches and what not.
