While this would work for single player, it would be hard/impossible in multiplayer.
Consider this:
2 player group. Both players died and have their timer up to 30 sec.
The way it is now: Player 1 dies, has to wait 30 sec. After 5 sec, player 2 dies and has to wait. Both players are death for 35 sec in total. 1 can still do damage, but even if they wait to resurrect, it's 35 sec of lost time.
When taking it from the timer: Player 1 dies, comes back and 30 sec of the timer. After 5 sec, player 2 dies, 30 sec of the timer. Total time lost: 60 sec. And it becomes worse in the party get larger.
They COULD implement a way so that the overlap is not calculated (only 5 seconds taken when player 2 dies in the example above), but that will make the game more complex for nothing.
I do know the timer is annoying and boring, but removing it would also promote bad gameplay: When your timer hits 30 seconds, you need more survivability, you are doing a level that's too high for you (I know, there are cases with multiple elite packs that are impossible, but they should fix that instead of the timer). If you still manage to clear the grift in time with a 30 second timer, you have too much dps and not enough thoughness, so you should balance that.
That's the reason for the timer, they wanted to punish you if you die.
The wait timer can be annoying especially when trying to push high Grifts solo.
It would be nice with an option to forfeit the timer to get rid of the wait times.
But Blizzard can and should punish the whole group for 1 members failure.
That is like the basics of any multiplayer game.
The difference between playing in group contra solo in Grifts is very skewed, and it would be healthy for the game if Blizzard decide to balance it out.
and what about your CDs? they will refresh too? You will cry, if they dont implement these 30 sec CDs refres...
CD's reset when you enter Greater Rifts anyway. Your argument is invalid.
Dude did you even read this guys comment. No...so re-read it again and correlate it to the OP. Your argument is invalid.
Your CD's do not RESET when you get revived. So RG pops up in level 3. you are going to wait 30 secs to revive and then TP out to reset or CDs you just wasted another 15 secs.
The answer is you dying a lot? you are under geared. simple answer.
What I find annoying about the timer is that the bosses continue their skill rotations while you are waiting. Nothing like have Sand Shaper in a close quarters map and you die. While you are waiting he casts a tornado every 5 seconds so when you revive you have all those to deal with as well as all the ones he cast prior.
What is your idea to replace death timer? Instant revive?
I'm sorry sir, but there must be something that makes you hate dying and that actualy sets you back for it. There is no point if it isnt the case.
You can always join the hardcore community, I'm sure you won't complain about a 30 seconds timer
My advice for you is :
- play hardcore
- do not die so often
- develop patience, with patience comes wisdom, with wisdom comes power, with power comes domination over all things, even d3 death timers or the force.
Dear Diablo....waiting for 30 seconds every time u get killed sucks.
How about just taking the time of the bar so u arent sitting their for five minutes every game.
Thank you in advance.
They said they don't wanna do that because of coop
Those Who Do Not Know True Pain Cannot Possibly Understand True Peace...
Well some people play single........surely its not too hard.
They make u play class cannon builds to get to top rifts.....and then you sit there for a third of the game doing nothing.

You, sir, have made my day.
Sincerely
Hardcore player
You obviously dont understand my post.....I have no prob with the punish....its waiting around for minutes doing nothing.
You play a DH in high rifts and try not getting killed.
You get one shotted off the screen.....
But yeah lets scratch ur ass sitting around waiting.

THEY HATE US, CUZ THEY AIN'T US
Could make it so u instantly spawn and advance time by x seconds (if u want to) but only for single player

What I love is they cast to attack you before you can even buff yourself as you're still grey'd out.
