People have been streaming the Japanese version for a few days now and i gotta say im so afraid to play this game alone.
I watched a stream for 5 hours of this one guy who just kept dying at this one boss and he must have died at least 50 times.
I'm pretty much hyped through the roof for this game. The atmosphere, the looming sense of doom that hangs over you all the time, the more open exploration than Demon's Souls...ohhhh Gawwwdddd -drools-
Shitty thing is that the preorder collector's pack comes with a fucking DIGITAL strategy guide instead of a handbook version. I'm really a sap for RPGs with lots of fun little goodies and the fact that the guide is digital blows. I didn't use the one for Demon's Souls much, but it was just so cool to have.
Been watching some streams, but I gotta stay away from them or too much will get spoiled. A game like this is best played when you don't know whats around the next corner, or where the treasure is.

Ya, it's too bad the guild is digital. I'm a little bummed about that too. I agree about the streaming as well. I have watched a lot of intro videos already and I don't want to spoil anymore, so I'm staying away from the streaming.
On another note, here's another article. I LOVE the title!
"WINNER: DARK SOULS - Skyrim has dragons, but Dark Souls has crazy ass, insane dragons that come with the inherent challenge of the Dark Souls experience."
What a horrible week to be working nights. I'll be picking up Dark Souls on Tuesday before work, and then suffering the entire night while the game sits in my car...taunting me <_<.
I'm a bit surprised at how massive this game seems like it's going to be. Lots of secrets, which according to the developers the Japanese players haven't even found yet...so hidden away that they'll be dropping hints in the coming months to help people out a bit.
Also preordered the (400 page or so) hardcover guide off Amazon. Huge fan of this series...really speaks to my love of classic, brutal Western RPGs. Ironic that From Software is Japanese and has been making more Western style rpgs for a long time. Many of them better than developers on this side of the pond.
EDIT: Just saw a photo of the NA collector's edition (the only version with digital extras rather than physical)...
JESUS CHRIST...even the soundtrack is digital. For fuck sakes I hate this kind of shit. I'll very likely be trying to import some of the physical stuff if possible. Apparently the pocket guide is just a snippet of the official guide. This is one reason I already miss Atlus. Good thing this CE is just the price of the regular game...I love the cover art on the tin case, but it wouldn't be worth shelling over extra cash for IMO.
I picked this game up yesterday and I love it. I especially like games where you can take your time and search every nook and cranny so to speak and develop strategies. By the way I figured out how to kill the guy sitting at the bonfire after the bird drops you off there, and I'm certainly reaping the benefits :).
This game looks really interesting...to bad I dont have a console :'( (Unless you count Ps2)

THIS SHIT IS SO (deleted) HARD!!! I've been playing for two days now and came to rant about it, saw there was already a thread, and came here. I've had to take breaks because I'm getting so frustrated and angry with it. I'm aware that I'm such a bad (deleted) player at this game. I have eleven hours invested...eleven long and (deleted) annoying hours of defeating ten enemies over and over again only to die at the eleventh (some big knight blocking my path.) I've used multiple sources of help, including maps and direct requests, but I can't beat this NORMAL enemy. A lot of times, I don't even get to him! I accidentally ticked off the only merchant for a thousand miles and was forced to kill him, so I'm stuck without a bow or arrows. Did I mention where I was? I'm in the first area after the tutorial level. Yes. Ten mother(deleted) hours of trying to get through an area that one gaming website describes as "the first three hours of gameplay." And their description included the tutorial level. My strongest weapon is broken, my controller is broken now (the battery pack no longer stays in the back, so I have it hooked up to the Xbox with a wire) and I'm feeling pretty close to tears.
I know it's just a game...but damn, there's a limit.

hahahahaha. Ya, it's definitely a tough game, but it's beatable. I'm on my second play through. On my first play through, after playing for a couple of hours my jaw would start to hurt because I was clenching my teeth the entire time. No game has ever done that to me before.
I had to return it to Redbox after two days (I had two games out so it was $8. Redbox is nice for a day or two, but after that it gets kind of bad.). Towards the end I was really getting the hang of it: I was able to kill the big black knight enemies without taking more than one or two hits, could take out several enemies at once, etc. I was at the Gargoyle bosses when I quit. Definitely looking forward to playing it again...and then letting a friend play it and laugh at their frustration.
