Please, promise me to come back here after the release, to ask the following question:
"Why do you whine again?"(obviously, the majority will never get satisfied).
The honest answer is: because im casual.
Complaining has nothing to do with playing casually.
I disagree.
You're welcome to disagree, care to support your disagreement though? The vast majority of players don't even visit forums to make a comment or voice their opinion, many of which are casual players.

"Why do you whine again?"(obviously, the majority will never get satisfied).
The honest answer is: "because im casual".
The second answer is: "now im leaving, because this game is still too hard. Loyal costumers should keep supporting this game, while im having a break till loot 3.0. After that, i will still whine".
I think the only thing better than trading with other players is finding all of the items I need myself. Thanks to smart drops and loot 2.0, that wish is fulfilled.
People aquired wealth with their credit card in D2 just like in D3 (including me) and if you didn't buy your items, you just farmed for runes and scammed noobs untill you had enough to buy a good item off of someone who got it from a botter / duper / 3rd party site.
I played d2 quite alot, probably upwards of 1000 hours after my 3 or 4th ladder playthrough... i never purchased anything from a site i found 3 sojs and a 2 maras at least which are failry similar in there drop rate. and i made plenty of legit trades which were profitable for me and the other person.
there is no way of knowing how many items were duped or how many were not, so enough with the pure speculation and claims that everyone acquired there items through either scamming newbs or buying them off sites. Because its false.
I'm not saying it did not happen, what i am saying is that no-one has any way of knowing how many items were duped, but obviously it was not all of them, and self found was very viable.(single player)
I only purchased items in my last playthrough which was in 2011 if i'm not mistaken. So that's roughly 10 years after playing D2 on and off as i stated earlier. I was just too young back then so i believe that if i had the option i would use my credit card.
About the dupes... 90% of the high runes on closed b.net were duped. Atleast 90%. Also, all of the 40/15, 3/20/20, etc... were all duped. If you think that the enigma you traded for in a legit manner is actually legit then the chance that you are wrong is about 99%. The d2 economy was totally driven by botters and dupers.
Some people have a way of knowing because they experieneced it first hand or just knew people who did. I am not going to deny that i have experience in botting but i don't think it's allowed to talk about it on this forum.
I just want to mention that i now have 6 characters (hammerdin, cold sorc, hybrid zon, bone necro, bvc barb, wind druid) Fully geared with mostly purchased gear. Not perfect gear but pretty decent. So i log in every month and refresh the characters so they won't get deleted :\

I hope that Riptide is right about the ladder being an incentive enough for people to keep playing the game even though their gear might be just too good and easy to get. If the smart drops actually take into account your current gear stats and give you drops that are upgrades, then it might somehow work out even for minmaxers in a way that aan upgrade will always drop but the closer you get to perfect stats on an item, an upgrade will be harder to find therefore require more farming.
My hope is that they introduce a bunch of game modes like the loot hunt / survival modes and that this will actually keep players in the game. I'm kind of skeptic about that option though... But personally, this is the only way to go for me since ladder really does not interest me whatsoever. Hell, i am more interested in PVP than in a ladder. I don't even know why people think that we need a ladder but i'll leave that for another discussion.
Sorry for writing like an idiot... too lazy to go back and edit points in so i just add whenever i remember something...

I'm not sure if it was 90%, but it was a pretty damned large number. People who weren't interested in above-average gear weren't effected though, because I doubt anyone was duping 6/6/15 Vamp Gazes, but you could probably bet your ass that 8/8/20 Vamp Gazes were duped. High runes, SoJs were constantly duped because they were currency. As many people around here have said, before they buffed the rune drop rate, getting a legit Enigma required a goddamned stroke of luck better than what it takes to win the lottery. For anyone to believe that all the Enigmas floating around were legit takes serious suspension of disbelief.
Also: I can't wait to hear how people get scammed out of their underpants and cry delicious bitch-tears over pixels.
I could do without that. Scams = more tickets for Blizzard = more resources devoted to resolving them. I'd rather more resources go to development than to answering tickets. Scams also represent the shadiest element of th community - the people who literally want something for nothing. If the AH was bad in terms of rewarding people with gear, scammers are even worse. I am *very* concerned about using the trade window with strangers. It didn't pan out well in D2, and I don't think it's going to pan out well in D3.

If you really just use the trade window and check and double-check before hitting the accept button, it's pretty safe. Most scams happen because people don't check if the weapon placed in the trade window is really the original item the trade was about, or miscount the numbers (I hope Blizzard fixes this and introduces decimals/thousands separator).
The other thing is that people for some ridiculous reason let themselves talk out of using the trade window. "Oh, I'm color blind and can't see the trade window, and I have special glasses for that but my dog ate them so please could you drop the item such that I hear the legendary drop sound it'll help me a lot and I'll give you the money later..." yeah, sure. Whoever engages in a trades with a stranger without using the trade window deserves to get scammed, sorry.

Blizzard doesn't punish scamming in anything but WoW. It's pretty much like Eve or Path of Exile in that regard. Never restore scammed items or reverse trades.
Even in WoW the only scam they do anything about is if you don't return an item or gem that you were suppose to after crafting/cutting the gem.
If I just fooled you into hitting trade and you realized later that you were scammed, they won't do anything about it.
