Hello im new here and my english is bad, anyway i really wanna know: dupe still on?
I have played 500 hours +, 3 lvl 60's i have NEVER droped any good item, even with 250 mf + 20 paragon + any other stuff.... And i wonder, how tha f. ppl can buy 23 million gems?
Im back to the game for 5 weeks and nothing new.. never had more than 3 m in my stash...
how ppl can have this ammy ? I want one of those..
is exactly the same and worth... i dont know maybe 500 m? my thought : u dupe 1 ammy and make 500 millions from someone that buy gold from chinese farmers, is that it?
Or diablo 3 is a game that you need to scam someone?
More than 500 hours and never more than 3 million gold? That sounds... unlikely. Are you spending your money the wrong way?
There's a lot of gold that has piled up on players' accounts over the last months. There was absolutely no gold sink until 1.07 (and the new crafting stuff won't remove a huge chunk either). Top items sell for multiple billions of gold. How do you get there? Well, some people use credit card and buy gold on the RMAH, some people are just lucky and find items worth multiple hundreds of million (or even a billion) gold, some people play the AH (buy and sell, aka AH flipping), and some people just play and save up lots of money for thousands of hours.
Your assumption (do you have to dupe or scam etc.) to get one of these items is wrong. You have to be lucky. If you really never had more than 3 million with 500 hours of play time (which sounds really unlikely) you're either extremely unlucky or extremely bad at handling gold.
They can, but it has side-effects. They could make all items on a rolled-back character BoA... but that reduces the re-sell value of their items to next to nothing, effectively removing millions, or even hundreds of millions of gold from that character. That's a bitter pill to swallow. Would the community be happy if the consequences of being now include a massive markdown on their gear's worth? I doubt it. That's an option which is only viable when the proportion of fraudulent rollbacks just gets too damn high.
Another option would be to simply say "We don't do rollbacks. Secure you account better.". I'm sure that'd go down well. Charging for rollbacks we be even worse, as it would only adversely affect legitimate customers.
The fact is that rollback dupes are a consequence of two things... Blizzard's character-recovery service giving you your items back, and a 'good faith' auction house which doesn't penalize people who unknowingly buy 'stolen' items. In the end, one of those two things has to go in order to fully 'solve' the problem.
Or we can accept low-level duping as the background noise that it is, and stop trying to leverage it as 'proof' that Blizzard's rationale for always-on was BS.
Or just make authenticator-protected accounts a requirement on both AHs for purchases/sales above 1m gold AND make rolled back stuff BoA.
I don't agree that there are no sane/viable/feasible options for Blizzard in this matter.
Why punish the victim for the crimes of the hacker?
The dupes are a complete side-effect of being hacked and having your items stolen. If you make the restored items BoA all you've done is allow the hacker to get away with stealing someone's shit that they worked hard to get and left them unable to sell them.
That's not a good solution as it only works if the hacker and victim are actually the same person or in kahootz, which they are sometimes but not all of the time. In those cases, sure, it's a fine solution. In cases where they are different people it's nothing more than punishing the victim.
EDIT
Also what Catalept said below me here. Telling people they must buy an authenticator to participate in parts of the game would create more problems than it solves. Blizzard cannot implement any solution to any problem that would require the purchase of an authenticator. THe number of people screaming for heads to roll would make the IAS nerf whinebabies look tame.

... that's because you're not thinking in terms of community response. Of course there are viable solutions, but would the community accept them? For some idiot reason, there's always a furious amount of push-back when Blizzard attaches features to the authenticator (OMG Blizzard profiteering!), for instance.
I farm like 5 m then buy some item, or farm 3 m to buy some at AH, i try to say that i never had like 23 millions to buy one single gem.
And I have a simple solution for this problem... is just tag each item with a serial number... making the number something like: Drop hour, battlenet tag, and chars name... make a serial numer like: "#199323412" when u sell adds more the btag of the next guy.... if ur get scamed blizz just back one numeber... is impossible a company like them cant think in something like that.. i belive they dont care!
Interesting thread. I was wondering too if there was any known duping/botting going on. I really really really dont want to see this game go the route of D2 in that aspect.
Im really getting into this game and I really dont want to see it spoiled. We all know that someplace, somewhere somebody is cheating, I just dont want it to become common place.

As far as we know (well, there's no real proof for that) items have that kind of unique ID (it would be pretty stupid if not). Therefore Blizzard *can* delete dupes. But dupes are actually created by Blizzard because of account restoration.

see the links i send at he first message of this post.. is always the same ammy, a friend said that worth billions .. so i belive is really hard that many ppl have the same one!

I dunno, if I got hacked, I would rather I get my items back with 0 value on them than get nothing back at all.
In this other thread about duping where all of this was discussed, I believe the more reasonable solution would be to limit rollbacks to one per account (not two as it is right now) and make the "hacked" items BoA. That way, the "duped" items floating around only exist as one set, not 2, 5, 20, or 100 going in multiple directions. Dupes will move linearly and it'll be much easier to track who's duping that way.
Yes, tough love. Don't get hacked. Protect your account. Don't click shady "free gold" URLs, which though it may be a surprise to many, people actually do click those links and some people go as far as putting in their personal info in there.

Account-Rollback duping is pretty rare I believe. And in fact Blizzard did implement BoA rollback items for Asia, although not for any other region at this time. I'm not aware of any other type of duping. I know how prevalent duping was in D2, and I don't think we are seeing any of that right now.

I suspect that there are no unique IDs for items. It would be a pretty massive undertaking, as Blizzard would need to track every single item that drops. Even if they only tracked rare items and above, it would be a huge number of items to track. I imagine that it is technically possible, although maybe not very feasible.

I think anyone who doesn't get this by now is a lost cause... either that, or they're fine with random people having random items taken away from them because they unknowingly bought a duped item.
Rollback duping is not causing significant damage (or even much damage at all) to the economy. Honestly, the worst effects of it is the endless trickle of "OMG dupes!" threads.
