1) You can go solo, I don't know how many servers will be open to someone just joined. So a good place to look for friends would be on forums like this or to join a guild if you don't want to play solo
2) I haven't played the WD yet, however, I would lean towards the Wizard more - I've heard from people that the WD isn't as user friendly as the Wizard so if you're new and that information is correct you should rather go with the wizard.
3) The point of the game is to finish it - the reason most do it is to grind for weapons at the end, but most important is to play it and enjoy it )
1) Do I need friends to play D3 with, or can I log in and team up with 3 other random people? Or, do I have to join a guild or clan?
2) Anyone who played Witch Doctor in BETA, how is it? I would like to play Witch Doctor or Wizard, but leaning towards Witch Doctor.
3) Is the point of D3 to beat the campaign or just grind for weapons?
Hi, always nice to have a new gamer. : ]

you can also join public games which is nice you get paired with 3 random people so you can play with people with out having anything premade. the the nice thing is if you get along with them you can ask to friend them so you will have more consistent interactions.
2.
go with your instincts, play the witch doctor. all classes are pretty balanced it make take some time to play a certain class really well but will be more rewarding.

The point of all games is to have fun : ] play with your abilities, explore the maps , try different builds , different classes , meet up with friends, make new ones. finishing the game and grinding are optional.

1) No friends necessary. Just a stable internet connection. No need to join guilds or clans either. In fact many people intend to play the game on Normal solo and enjoy the story before jumping into groups.
2) The Witch Doctor is really fun, summoning fire bats, Throwing endless jars of spiders. But my advise is to play all the classes at least till the Skeleton King which is about 90mins in. This will give you a good taste of all the classes. There have been many people who have tried out other classes and changed their opinion of which is their new fave class.
3) Diablo is a little unique if you've never tried an ARPG. Gear is important and its always an ongoing quest for better gear (huge part of the fun). But the campaign is probably 16-20 hours (Just a guess). When you start the game it is on Normal Mode. Many folks will complete normal and stop there, and had a super time.
After you finish normal mode, you can now access Nightmare mode. Which is the exact same game (story wise) but you get to use the same character and level him up more (End of normal is about level 30). Access to more items, enemies will be tougher etc. the game play really is very very different from Normal mode and many consider it more fun, cos not only are the enemies harder, you're more powerful as well.
Then after Nightmare, Hell mode opens up which is again, access to more items, enemies will be tougher etc. It is expected that if you complete Hell, your character will be level 60. Then you unlock Inferno mode which is supposed to be ultra hard and hopefully keep us occupied for months to come. In any mode, if you have problems, try grinding for better gear and/or change your build and try new strategies.
Does anyone else find it unusual that this person is 'new to video games' yet their username is JizzLobster?
jizzlobster isn't a video game reference as far as I know?

Alright, thanks for all of the good info. However, I am still unclear about two things. One, can I clear the modes solo? What I mean is, does the game scale? So if I am in Normal or Hell mode and I am solo, are the enemies weaker, or just as strong as if I were playing with 4 players?
I am not a hardcore player or anything. At max, I would play maybe 2-3 hours during the work week, and maybe 3-5 hours during the weekend; that is on the higher end. I was apprehensive because I thought I would need to find some hardcore guild just to play. If I can play at least normal mode solo, and experience the story, or lore, and take my time just checking things out, that's good enough for me. I just don't want 3-players screaming at me to hurry up because they want to be he first player to 100 or something.
I have never played a Diablo game, and now recently reading the story line it is very interesting. At first I thought it was very cheesy. Angels versus demons...again? However, after reading some more, I found that wasn't the current story line a all. So I am looking forward to just learning what happens at the end.
My other question regarding class, was just for fun factor. I really do not care which class does the most damage or anything. I was just wondering if anyone had input regarding how fun each class is. In the end that's all I care for. You had a good point about trying out all classes, and I think over time, I will do that. Just try out various classes.
And regarding my name, JizzLobster, it's just comical and not really intended to be sexual. As a working professional who spends 90-hours a week at the office, it gets tiresome always having to be politically correct and watching your mouth. That's what I enjoy about games the most, I can be myself without worry. After all it is the internet. Thanks for all the good input.
...and a wizard. They just have different playstyles, I think none can tell if it is "fun to play" or not. Since it's up to the person, I myself prefer witch doctor, gonna start that. Tried it in beta and loved what I've seen.
