Seems like every other thread I read consists of atleast 3 or 4 posts about how this will be the "BEST GAME EVER"..
Does anyone actually believe that? To me.. D3 is a let down. I am extremely excited to play and get rolling with it no doubt.. but think back to before that first video came out, before screenshots were released.. is the the product you expected?
Sure it has its merits, I think its going to be fun and relatively successful.. but what I imagined for the last what... 12 years since D2.. this just isn't up to par.
The graphics are cool but uninspired. Interactive environments are a neat touch, I dont know what the look of the game is missing but it just seems.. meh. Cant put my finger on it.
Not going to start on the PvP dilemma, we all know thats a major gaffe..
In general, I'm personally not BLOWN AWAY by this release.. would love to hear why I'm wrong and this is the best game ever.
Making games is tough enough without having to live up to everyone's personal expectations. I don't think anyone is claiming it's the best game ever. But a lot of people, including myself, are enjoying the beta and are eagerly awaiting retail release.
Hard to agree/disagree or just flat out have a discussion if you can't put your finger on what's bothering you.
Regarding the graphics "uninspired" is such an overused term and one of the hardest to quantify. Are you implying that they ripped off the models from some other game?
People who are claiming EITHER that this game is the best ever or that it's going to be...well anything...just aren't going to know for sure until after release. We've seen just too little of it.
I suppose my problem is how similar to D2 this game looks. SURE the graphics are improved.. but its 2012..
I just played Torchwood as a timewaster and it looks similar. Just saying.
The real point of the thread was to think back to BEFORE you saw anything so you had no image besides your own to place on the game.. did this fit what you guys wanted to see out of it?
I like the direction they took with the game, gameplay wise. I prefer a lot more the current skill system than a static skill tree, it should allow more interesting builds, and even modification depending on the challenge (for a boss or what else).
It feels like a mix between Diablo 2 and League of Legends, and I like both games.
Other things bug me on the game as well, I am trying very hard not to go into a "they consolized my d3 wah" rant haha.. I DO appreciate the business model behind making the game very accessible to a large crowd.. but I feel they over-did it.
In response to the more variety.. I agree to an extent there. The ruin system adds some customization to your skills.. I think that will be a "wait and see".. Cant decide if I love it yet.
I won't know what it's like till I have played it, thus far it looks amazing and I feel it will live up to what I expected. However even if I do have grievances when I play it through for the first time (which im confident I won't) there is little I can do about it anyway.
I just wanna slay some fucking demons, who's with me.

It's meeting most of my realistic expectations, but never all of my wants (I'm always going to want more :))
Im with you haha, my point was not that I was turned off to the game once I played beta.. just that it wasnt what I expected, not quite blown away.
The way joining games now works seems at first impression to make it TOO accessible.. not just with the beta content but I am imagining it will do so throughout the game. The ability to just jump in whenever you want, at any point along the story/quest line kind of shrinks the game IMO.
Takes away that feel of a long journey to get through to a boss..
Character model customization seems like it would have been a somewhat easy option to build in.. Wouldnt have needed to be extensive.. but a few simple options could really make your character more "yours" .. not sure on the word there
I think you're mostly looking at it a from a nostalgic point of view. When D1 and D2 were released, they weren't released with the intent of being the best games ever conceived, the great communities the games had is what made them so memorable.
Go into it with the intent of having fun, as you probably did with it's predecessors. Way to much hype is placed on what it will or should be, rather than what it is. It's a game, a form of entertainment. What you get from it is ultimately up to you.
To be honest I never thought there would be another one. I always hoped but I just figured with Blizzard North dissolved it was done, sure there were rumors but I never really bought into them. I really didn't have any idea of what it would be like at least nothing in depth. I did have some things I wanted changed though.
Things like PvP being consensual in some way, trading being more refined, gold having value, not fighting for drops anymore against people who use auto pickup bots, rushing not being the main focus of the game after a while. All of those things got changed for the better in my opinion. So I'm pretty happy with what it's turned out to be.
Did I imagine the graphics to look like this? No, but I think they're good. I can also see why things like player size are limited and the graphics aren't "amazing". I just upgraded to a new computer but my old one with 6gb ram, a dual core 2.7ghz processor, and a Nvidia 440GT had some lag, I played at max but places like the pillars before the skeleton king I would lag pretty noticeably ESPECIALLY with four players. Now I know some may argue that's not a good computer, but it wasn't bad either and Blizzard games have always been about reaching a large audience and not about requiring a elite gaming PC to play them. They never penalize people who have mid range PC's.
So overall there's been a few twists and turns here and there I've kinda been hesitant about but I think at this point after seeing and playing the beta from relatively early on until now I can really see and feel how it's grown and it's become a really great experience that is a lot of fun.
I agree with both your posts there. Maybe Im building it up a bit too much in my own head.
In reality, I do think the changes they have made will make the game more enjoyable.. and the features they have changed that i DONT like, for the most part, have the possibility of making the game more newbie friendly.. a larger persistent community will only help the game and for that I suppose I can live with what I dont like.
Honestly, I think the thing is that you're not a child any more. Nostalgia is king. You're comparing what you loved when you were younger to what your pessemistic and more intelligent older self deems fun. I suffer a similar problem to you, but I'm an optimist. Just assume it's going to be great, who cares if it's not the best thing ever, it's only a game.

this this and this again. 100% agree. took the words right out of my mouth. (although with better grammar and less cursing ;))

Back in the day gamers didn't have such high expectations because we were blown away by the simple and awesome ideas. But especially on a third major installment we are have set our hopes too high. But that being said I must agree that the amount of time spent developing the game vs the end product, is lacking in areas.
I really like the Beta but yah I would have liked the game to be a little grittier/realistic looking, especially the 5 characters. Ive never been a fan of the more cartoony design when Diablo is such a dark game.
But I'm sure once I play the full version I will enjoy the game immensely no matter what my opinion on the cartoonish look is
