I am new here and would like to introduce myself. I have been in love with Diablo since the first game so many years ago <3. I have now had my heart broken by the announcement that with Diablo 3 that single with have to be online with multi-player. I really hope that Blizzard changes that and allow us to play offline. Anyone else here that feels the same way?

You are months late to the party man. The ragefest over no-offline-SP has already settled. I do feel your pain, though. Just download any of the numerous hacked copies that will take care of that problem once the game is released.
if u dont have a good internet connection its bad...
but i dont think Blizz. will go back to offer offline mode... times change, and things changes too..

No it isn't, almost any connection can handle the single player thing without a problem. Like many have said before me, I wouldn't be surprised if a 56k modem could handle it.
Blizzard will not change it's policy on this matter, it's an integral part of the game by now and it's how it's going to be.
Yup this.
I don't think there is a place on earth(with electricity) you could be without the potential to get internet service.

Beta is still pretty far from being fully hacked. I doubt things will be functional at release. Maybe two years later.

That's because the big guns aren't trying to hack it. I read that Razor or Skidrow, don't remember which one, promised to have it hacked in less that 24 hours. I'm not saying they will hack it so soon, but those guys never fail to deliver.
My complaint is not with DRM or having to redo my character to play with others online. I also do not have a problem with change either. What I have a problem with is spending $60.00 for something I cannot ever own and that is a single player game of Diablo 3 that I paid for. This is a control issue, not a protection of piracy issue. Like one person said here, it is going to get hacked anyway and Blizzard knows that. This is something that has been sweeping across the computer market, to charge people a lot of money for a product that they cannot own. It is a question of ethics not change. Blizzard does not have to go to this extent to protect a single player game. They do it because they know people will put up with it. They are taking your money and not giving you the product that you bought. They are taking your $60.00 dollars and allowing you the privilege of playing your game on their server, NOT your computer. Blizzard has increased it's profits at your expense and if Blizzard decides to fold up and close down for good, you will be out of a game and the money you spent on it.

To what extent though? This is not the same as writing a new executable for Need for Speed. A lot of the game's information is on blizzards severs, and in order to play offline they will need to create a custom server from scratch. And its a daunting task to make a custom server that performs remotely similar to that of the original.
So yah, they might hack it right off the bat, but it wont be worth playing for months, years, or ever.
Battle.net has been developed to support even dated internet connections. Single player online play has been designed to have smooth combat even with lousy internet. I'm sure playing PvP or in a party would be a different story however.
Because of this, there isn't really any reason to incorporate straight SP play. They've convinced me that doing online only is far more secure and will result in way less hacks overall. Also, only a tiny little fraction of the player base will suffer. These are people who are living in the middle of the desert or antarctica or something. Unfortunately it is difficult to cater to 100% of everyone.

Yes its too difficult to cater to the 1%, unless you live in the US.

Surely people still don't have 56k modems? Even when I'm capped my net goes faster than 56k. Or am I delusional and do some places in the world still have slow net like 56k?

Oh yes, lots of people. (well... lots compared to what we think of)
We had 56k out here for awhile due to living in the middle of nowehre, it was only in the last 2 years we got dsl.
Also Single player D3 works great on 56k according to many reports.
Also Blizzard is allowing you to make money from selling 'things you don't own'.
And actually you own it, whether you feel it ethical or not, because you buy intellectual property tied to an account, which is no different than buying a new household appliance, so you pretty much own it in the end.
They are taking your money and not giving you the product that you bought.
They are actually giving more for those 60$, like constant support, patches and security. No company is forced to support a product beyond it's release (well, obviously online games do need stable servers at the very least, but nothing specifically beyond that), what about 10 years after release...
Moreover, you can play singleplayer if you want to, you are not forced to play multiplayer etc., but you just have to be online.
What I consider my $60.00 worth is a disk in my hand with the full "single player game" that I can load into my own computer and play anytime I want without having to rely on another server somewhere else. I can see it if I was doing multi-player but I am just not into that. As far as buying and selling stuff, once again, that is great for those who are into that but I am not. Buying and selling stuff is not a CD in my hand to load on my computer. Therefore, my $60.00 is nothing more than a gamble as to rather or not my IP and/or Blizzards server is working that day or rather or not Blizzard is still in existence. When it comes to constant support and patches, I have always had that from Blizzard with Diablo 1 and 2. I could download it from their site and install it, no problem.

I think the sad reality that is that this is something that you will just have to get used to! Given the extent to which some hackers ruin the game I can see many games in the future taking the same route as Blizzard.
Basically, at some point Blizz considered making two versions of the game, "offline" and "online" characters. Of course, offline characters would be banned from the AH, multiplayer, achievements... etc. At some point they realized how stupid that was... having two parallel versions of the game, one "hackable" with almost no features, and one "secure" with all the online features, instead of having just one version.
Think about newcomers to the series, or new players in general... it is really confusing to have two different versions... you might get really far into offline mode when you realize how bad it sucks and having to start over on battle net.
About the lag... when you are playing on your own lag won't be an issue at all. It might be when you party with other people or when the game servers are having issues (such as on launch day lol) but normally we will be able to happily play by ourselves (if we so wish) without any major problems.

Not any time soon, as it would be a rather bad fiscal decision.
