I'm seriously wondering how we're going to upgrade gems. The old fashioned way, 3 of same grade -> 1 of next grade? Because if that's the case, it's gonna take A LOT of gems to get a radiant star gem. Especially since only the first 5 grades can drop. >.>
There are 9 more grades above radiant, the fifth grade, so..
(# of radiant gems needed for next grade)^(# of grades above radiant)
3 ^ 9 = 19638
o.O 19638?! FML
Collecting that many 5th grade gems would take years of non-stop playing, even with trading. Unless you're able to just buy gems late game, which is less ridiculous, but still pretty bad. Hopefully they provide several different methods of upgrading gems, or reduce the number gems needed for the next level to 2, although that might make it too easy.
That's why Bashiok said they are thinking about maybe some crafting recipes to be able to upgrade gems directly to higher levels with crafting mats. Also, I think gems stack to 10 in D3, so they should take up a lot less space than before.
We'll probably be dropping gems a couple levels further than the 5th (as previously stated), which should help. We also want to make sure it doesn't become a pain to have a ton of gems sitting around waiting for another one to upgrade, so there may be some crafting solutions that help with that. But more importantly we expect a more robust trading system will make it much more feasible to sell off a ton of gems, earn that wealth, and then buy back into gems later when you want - and on the buyer side of that, if you have some gems and just need one more to upgrade, it will be quick and easy to go get one for a reasonable price.
When I first started collecting P Gems in D2 they were worth a lot more than they are now, I'm sure it will be similar in D3. Gems will decrease in value over time.

What Bash just said gets me more hopeful for an auction house than gems lol. If you read into how he put it it kinda hints at a easy, and wide spread trading method. It's nice they're thinking of dropping higher lvl gems also, I want it to be a challenge to get end game gems, not pain staking lol.

Unless high level gems are BoE sothey can't float around in the economy forever.

I'd like a kind of BoE for Gems. Maybe something like you can only use them in 3 different items before the Jeweler can no long take the Gem out of said item.

Yea, the only socketable thing in the game right now are Gems. There will probably be a life leech gem though. At least there could be, or a life leech enchantment.

Yeah I highly doubt there will be a life leach gem as was in D2. They already said that yes there will be life leach, but not to the level that it was in D2. Do that would mean that even at the life leach gems highest level it would still have to be really little for them to compare it to D2 and call it less.

If its limited to one type of socket (ie Weapon Sockets), it could be kept in low amounts. Obviously they could just limit it to rings, or enchantments or something as well, but it is an option.
I think a more interesting question than will you collect or will you socket is will you take those 3 radiant round rubies you have and socket them into you're equipment or will you upgrade them now? Losing versatility and (if they still work like D2) some stats for the reduced socket space when all of your equipment has 1-6 sockets especially if some of them are not filled. I could see someone having 6-12 gems that could be upgraded, but are not because they are being used in items and only when the fourth gem turns up would 3 be upgraded, or something like that.
I was thinking about this because One tweet stated that there would be a 'caster gem' so, if there is one generic gem, 2 caster gems, one ranged gem one melee gem and one physical gem (so that any character build would want to use 3-4 of the gem types and likely not use the others as much) and you have upwards of 26 sockets possible(this assums 6 in weapon/armor/shield and 4 in helms/pants) then you might have 9-21 gems in equipment, not upgraded because it took all of the gems you have found so far to get the quality you have and still have several sockets open, then will you upgrade and only have 3-7 gems instead of 9-21 and have lots of open sockets?
I personally would fill the sockets first and upgrade when I started to accumulate excess (unless of course, I could make my first radiant star with what I have

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
Keep in mind raptor that having the blacksmith take gems out of you gear might be eager expensive, so thus maybe just saving the gems without using them could be the best option in sacred of high level gems, assuming the higher level the gem the more the blacksmith will charge you to remove it from an item. There's also very little known about types of gems, I doubt they'll just have them cadigorized into caster, ranged, and so on. That would be taking a step back from their useful ness compared to d2. I expect gems to be much more useful that just say the example of a casting speed spec gem they gave. I'd bet gems will cover many more atributes, such as maybe run walk speed/caster cast speed if in boots (I hope boots are socketable lol).
