Let me begin this by saying that I am so glad that crossbows are getting a bigger part in Diablo 3. I have always loved crossbows as a medieval weapon. I always hated that there were no good ones in D1 or D2. Now, with the DH I can hope they are playing a much bigger role.
With that said, is it possible that the crossbows are being treated like guns. If you haven't seen the panel yet, there are poses where she is duel-wielding xbows which isn't bad, in fact its awesome. However, in the poses she is crossing her arms, holding the xbows sideways (gangsta style), one pointed backwards over her head. Form the gameplay vid, there really is no difference if there was a xbow or a gun in her hand. Especially with gernades and more modern mechanical traps, it only feels more like she is using guns instead of xbows. they fire rapidly with just a push of the trigger.
I personally have no problems with them, I was just wondering what those who despise the idea of guns in sanctuary thought about this.

Repeating Crossbows have existed in ancient times.
Now early generation handguns are actually no better than crossbows and are worse off in fact.
The gameplay clearly shows crossbow shots and not pistol shots, you can see the bolts flying off towards the enemy.
The key thing here is that 20 years have passed since the events of D2!
20 years can bring around lots of technological advances!
Especially when the whole world of Sanctuary was prepared for an invasion from the Burning Hells.
I don't think mankind and the likes will sit around waiting for the Demons and what-nots to invade without proper preparation!
Still this is my 2 cents take on the plot, lore and technological stuff we might see in the game.
I agree that it obviously LOOKS like a crossbow but it doesn't feel like a crossbow to me.
What makes it not feel like a crossbow to me is that when she fires it looks as if her whole bottle gets a jolt from firing at an enemy which looks a little too much like shes firing a machine gun or something, i dunno i'll have to watch video again...i could be crazy!!!
btw, could i say fire anymore in that run on sentence?

You're not crazy. IT really feels like a gun, specially when she uses that new multishot skill that looks just like contra's spread gun.
Actually, despite i'm an very conservative diablofan, i would not hate guns in the game, as long as they were not machine guns, rockets and Aks. Those guns from the XVII century would not be that bad i think.
But I hate the fact that they turned one weapon into another. The DH should use hand pistols, I would not be pissed. Now dual wield crossbows is just bullshit. Terrible way to inovate.
Honestly, I find it hilarious. I am loving it. Everybody whined and cried about the mere idea of a firearm in the game (Not saying here, but in all of Blizzard's Diablo Fan Sites) and so they came and made a Crossbow that behaves like a Pistol.
i dont really mind one way or the other. personally i prefer bows, but they arent doing guns simply because it doesnt fit the medieval feel of the game.

I have this odd feeling the Demon Hunter was originally gonna use guns, but then with the whining that everybody did (not just here, all diablo sites), (again, personal conjecture) they didn't wanna scrap the idea so they changed the guns to crossbows and kept on going.
Also, if you don't think guns fit the medieval feel, you should stop thinking about M16's.
The thing is that the crossbows she uses don't actually look like repeating crossbows. But I don't mind. There is no way to implement realistic archery in a game like diablo anyways. It would take long to reload any crossbow (bigger models even require the user to use his feet). It just wouldn't be fun to make them realistic.
To me they also seemed to behave a lot like guns though.
One other thing, check the 'cinematic' trailer for the DH. At the very end, when she hands the crossbow to the girl... That just looks like the handle of a pistol. Sure, there can be crossbows that look like that, but the way we see it there, it was very pistol-like.
But I'm okay with it, they might even be magically enhanced. She seems to be using demon teeth to make arrows for example, maybe it allows her to use xbows like that. As long as they are not actual guns, I don't care if they behave like them.
for me its not the logic in real world that makes it weird. It just how easily you could swap out pistols for the pistol crossbows without changing anything. To me, it is gameplay that makes something significant and not the actual look. These crossbows act exactly like guns. I just find it weird for a company who continual calimed that guns have no place in sanctuary would use the exact same mechanic with a different skin.
Again, I am ok with the xbows and fully plan on using them. I just find the situation weird.

They were opposed to having any guns in there lore-wise. Apparently they don't have anything against it gameplay wise, which is okay. Small, one-handed firearms give a new dimension to ranged weaponry.
Also, I find it easier to imagine bolas being shot from a crossbow than a blunderbuss. EDIT: it's still weird to have those small one-handed things shoot bolas though...
Seriously, her weapons should be Xbows, Bows and Throwing Weapons (Daggers) and her dual wielding would consist only in throwing weapon and maybe a crazy high tier unique crossbow.
It's not the possibility of dual wielding crossbows or not. It's the fact that those pistols crowbows are shocking. This kind of shocking stuff shouldn't be common or else the world will consist of crazy ass stuff.
For example, if they added a massive two handed sword like this onefor the barbarian. IF it's a unique sword that you see only now and then it's ok. But if you kill a zombie at 2 minutes of play and drop something like that... Theres something wrong.
I just think common bows and crossbows (and overall common stuff) should be more common(!). This kind of crazy shocking stuff should be rare, not the basics of a class.
It's her class-specific weapon. Its supposed to rape face. Also, its not that weird to believe that some of the DH's magic skills would go towards making magical ammo that don't require you to manually reload. That would be a pretty damn nice way to use your magical talents.
I would like to believe that she uses some innate demon-gift to pressurize the air around her into making bolts to be fired through her crossbows. That is a good enough explanation for me, so i'll just keep on believing it.

You can say reading the lore on them on the diablo 3 site that there area are the dreadlands (thinks that what they are called)
I looked at the map and that is really close to harrogoth area.
In diablo 2, the guy who repairs weapons talked about a new invention he had.
Well, what if while one of these demon hunters were walking in this area found the destroyed town, happened to find writings of a mechanical "gun".
In their own minds they probably said I could build this, and came up with the "pistol xbows"
I mean, its 20 years later. It can happen
Also -
I do like the character using crossbows, but wondering how she would look with a long bow type. Ive always liked normal bows.
Its still just a crossbow in looks and feels, in every way.
Crossbows=guns.
Truth is if there were guns, they would have probably functioned similar to the xbows of the DH.
