A monster in Inferno is attacking your Barbarian with a 100,000 fire-based damage attack. Choose your umbrella:
+50 Vitality
OR
+50 Dexterity
OR
+50 Strength
OR
+50 Intelligence
The point is to choose the most optimal stat increase because you keep getting 1-shotted with said 100k fire attack. Also, it is understood that even all 4 of these stats combined are not going to stop 100k of fire on their own. The point is to choose THE ONE of these that will be the most beneficial in eating said 100k fire as a Barbarian. If you wish to list multiple answers, each of their given explanations are certainly welcomed.
Also, this is meant to establish a precedent for those that want to fit every item into the same box every time...
It's not as simple as that. You need to acknowledge what stats you already have to determine which would be most beneficial. For example, if you have 1k vit but only 100 str or int, then one of those will most likely give you the biggest boost. If everything is equal however, I don't know the formulae so I'd have to see, but I would fathom a guess that str would be the most beneficial.
Strength, so that I can dodge the ball of fire with a swift movement to the left/right and them pummel the shaman/whatever into the ground. Quite frankly, I don't play with a barbarian, so I can't give a more accurate answer than that.
Vitality would be the most beneficial in getting your character closer to not being one shot because it gives you health and with the passive gives you an equal amount of armor that the strength would have given, considering all other stats are equal.
In the mean time dexterity is probably better because if you are going to get one shot anyway you will at least have a better chance of dodging and not being hit at all.

You've got my attention. May I ask you for numbers, please?

This is the best answer. Most likely you have a lot of vitality/str/all res and not a lot of dexterity (as that's how most barbarians in inferno tend to lean toward in gearing). In that case, dexterity would give you the most in regards to defense per stat and would be the most beneficial if you had to make that choice. You have to look at the stats as adding small numbers to defense as a whole rather than something as simple as "more dexterity means more dodge so I have a higher chance to dodge the 100k blow". That's not how stats work in Diablo.

You say Puttah has the best answer, but then say Dexterity would be the most beneficial. This is contradictory since Puttah chose Strength.
Additionally, I would like to ask you for more specific illustration, please. Details, details, details!

It's the best answer because it depends on your other stats. You aren't going to be able to come up with what is best without knowing what you already have.
Maybe you already have enough stats to where you'll survive it. Assuming you don't Vit > Int > Str (Assuming you can achieve enough to actually survive the hit, otherwise Dex is you're only option)

Your question is tricky in that you state that even all 4 stats combined would not save you from the 100k fire attack. However, you ask which would be most beneficial in you eating said attack. I'm also going to go with vit in the understanding that with nerves of steel more vit = more hp and more armor which translates to more effective health overall. Dex is too rng and barbs have such low dex to begin with that even though we'd probably be unaffect by the Diminishing returns of dex to dodge due to our low dex. It's still too RNG and doesn't help you eat the damage in the long run. The idea is to get your Effective health > 100k firedmg.
People need to stop looking at vitality and saying they have 35k health and thus are more tanky than someone else.
The thing that matters at the end is Effective Health. Someone with 50k health and a 150k effective health is squishier than a guy with 35k health and 250k effective health.
How to live through a 100k fire attack? Have more than 100k effective health.
i agree with an earlier poster in that the options provided are somewhat limited. From my experience (granted I'm still struggling thru Act 1 inferno on my barb with what little time I have to play the game now), the priority for most barbs is resist all > Vitality > Armor > Strength. Resistances is superior to any other stat given that it reduces all kinds of damage, has more availibility, scales better, and is magnified by War Cry. However, 50 Int is only going to add 5 resist all and that ain't much to go up against a 100k fireball. Vitality is a close second due to your health pool not only providing a buffer to absorb damage, but also due to some key barbarian skills returning a % of your health (revenge, furious charge, etc.). Not to mention, if you take the passive skill Nerves of Steel you gain 1 armor for every 1 vitality. Armor is also extremely useful due to it not only mitigating physical damage but also elemental damage. In other words the damage reduction you recieve from your armor reduces the damage taken from the 100k fireball. Strength however, does not provide a significant amout of armor so that you would notice it's effect on a 100k fireball. 50 str = 50 armor and even with tough as nails as a passive that number is fairly low when you consider your base armor before the str factor being so high just from your gear's armor. The only real noticeable advantage 50 str would offer would be if you really were able to avoid the fireball altogether and then the str would help you burn down the minion faster. 50 dex does offer dodge, but as a barbarian you will not be gearing for dodge and relying on your dodge to survive in inferno sounds like a silly idea for a barbarian. From an abstract perspective the allure of dodging the attack completely is nice, but the inconsistency of such an approach makes it just stupid. The closer you get to mitigating the damage the better your chance to survive as a barbarian.
Ultimately, I would say that Vitality wins out. 5 resist all shouldn't b > 50 Vitality ( or 50 armor and 1750 health). I may be underestimating the value of resistance, which I know already that it's incredibly important to all classes in inferno. However, given the stated values, I'd say 50 vitality > 50 strength > 50 int > 50 dex.

Define "everything".
Your dubiety is not unwarranted.

Indeed. Though inconsistent, it is a viable option in that regard.

This being said, a balance of all are necessary. ~1k resist, ~6-8k armor, ~40k+ hp are probably your goals.
+200 all resist would be equivalent to +2000 int. I see +60-+70 all resists a lot though.(which are +600-700 int equivalent).
