There’s been a long discussion about how accounts and character creation will be handled in Diablo III. How many characters will we be allowed to create per account? The question is one more directly answered, even if it’s nothing yet conclusive. Blizzard tweeted about the team’s thoughts on the number of characters we’ll be able to create for online play earlier Tuesday:
@FingolfinGR There's going to have to be a limit. Definitely more than 10. Probably less than 50.
This would easily solve the issue of creating multiple accounts to create the amount of characters we want to have – especially if the number is closer to fifty than ten. We also heard rumors of a shared stash to prevent the well known and annoying mule games. All that with Bashiok's blessing on the official forums.

No update, it's something we hope to do, it's not designed or in any sort of implementation phase so until we reach that point and either hit a revelation of it working or not we won't know for sure. But yes, still hope to have some sort of easy way to share between characters. "Drop games are dumb." - Bashiok
Diablo III confirmed to allow only one account to each CD key through Battle.net "2.0," and drop games hopefully a thing of the past, one wonders how item storage will work for characters, and possibly accounts.
Mules are annoying and a waste of time for sure. Maybe a mail system would be better for battlenet so to help make the trading system faster and more efficient, but a strait up shared trash would be best for single player.
I remember something about the character limit and I swear there was lots of whining, as if people knew already that they could not make many characters.
I don't know what the deal was, but if you can make even only 10, thats good enough for me.
The whole discussion of shared stash or "how to transfer items between characters" has been beaten to death however, and this brings nothing new or worth discussing. Hasn't everything been said already? We know what we could have, we know the possibilities, we know they have yet to do it and refuse to promise anything.
But this forum wouldn't know, its worse than talking to my grand-mother with her Alzheimer.
It is not about always relaying new news. Sometimes, it is important to bring back old topics to further relate it to newer information. The fact that they are working on a shared stash system relates to the amount of characters needed per account. The lack of muling means a lack of need of more character slots.

How i understand it is that "we know they'll do it but not exactly how".
question is if they'll simply use a mechanic known from other games (shared stash like TQ or Torchlight) or try to find something more original (?) or simply more fitting for the Diablo universe.
Certain is that we know now of a few things they're making different (artisans for example - that i doubt could carry a "universal stash" for every character in the account since you have to get them to follow you with quests) and it could give us something more to speculate with better chances of getting something right.
A series of banker NPC's could be practical and fit in to the development of Sanctuary. It would fit since we're already introducing Artisans for crafting needs and, perhaps like Artisans, could be upgraded periodically throughout your journey. If we're fair here, we all have to admit it makes no sense that there's a random chest just lying in the middle of town with no protection that everyone just uses.
Obviously, Bashiok was being sarcastic to a point in his response, but he did state a minimum, and that it would likely be over that. With respecs (though not as extensive as Diablo II respecs), the only other reason I can rationalize so many characters being available is because they haven't ironed out a sufficient way to store items. I can't name any of my friends off the top of my head from the last decade that had more than four or so characters that they did anything but mule with. Because of the nature of gear-gathering and RPG games in general, one usually sticks to one character for a long time to make them as powerful as possible, and makes others to supplement that character's pitfalls. I can't see people actively using any more than four characters on an account for any length of time, although I'm sure there are exceptions.
NO mules=FTW!!! WOO WOOO WOOOT I LOVE IT!!! (Also takes it so I cant steal any people's items when there muleing but i dont think I woudl do that in d3 anyway like in D2 I was a complete ass) lol

I was hoping for something like a bank for the whole account in major cities like Caldeum. They shouldnt be hard to reach through the waypoints.
Also something to think about would be a bank for the whole Clan this way that we havent heared a thing so far. If they used a bank system for the characters from the same account, it would be very easily used for Clans aswell.
Respecs wont work as they do in WoW - from what i've been reading here in the forum at least (i really hope to see some official quotes, though). We'll be able to remove a skill point or two that will require quests to accomplish (i hope they wont be the same all the time or it would be boring).
Besides, who doesnt want max leveled characters with top gear and different specs? i'm sure i want more than 2 Wizards (melee oriented and elemental at least), Witch Doctors, at least a Monk etc etc

I think its gonna end up more along the lines of how many times are you willing to wade through the same game to get a specific spec to end game with end game gear.
D2 style you'd just spend a day or two leveling, and mule over some gear and play around with w/e build you wanted. Didn't like it, no problem, trade or mule your gear to a new character and play around some more.
D3 style you can't really do this, since it seems like they are quite content on forcing you through the same content each alt you make before you can get them to an end game level, and your gear will bind. You'll probably have to spend months just to test a build out and if you don't like it end up with worthless gear if you decide to erase and make a new alt. Its not really a matter of who wants lots of uber characters, its a matter of how fun is it going to be to have to grind through the same content for hours and hours, just to get to end game, and grind another set of bound gear for hours and hours?
I like using dungeons and dragons online as an example as it seems a lot like what D3 is shaping into(and its free to play so you can check it out if you think I'm totally clueless). You could probably level a guy to max level in a month without bothering to grind much in terms of gear. You'd spend probably another year to deck your gear out. Theres a fair amount of players that get a level 20, or even a couple, but how many do you think play each class to level 20? Not very many...because each time you level a character your forced to grind through the same content, and run the same quests for binding gear. Making an alt actually makes you think, do I really want to invest this much time in this character that I might not even enjoy playing and have be a total and complete waste of time after I have leveled/geared? I never once thought that way while playing D2, it was always more just like eh, I don't mind wasting a couple days leveling, and worst case scenario the character blows, I xfer my gear away, and dabble with some other alt. Much more fun, and much more encouraging of alt making and experimenting D2 style.
The big difference is not to assume that Diablo III leveling will be the same as it is for Diablo II. Diablo III will have random events (instead of side-quests) all over Sanctuary on each act that will make the game feel a bit different and a bit more interesting on every playthrough. We still aren't sure if items will be Bind on Pickup, Bind on Equip or if they'll be soulbound at all either.
I see you think of the rushing that happened in Diablo II in a positive way and i wonder why. Sure, the gameplay can end up boring after a few playthroughs in Diablo II, but at least once (for every class) it feels way different considering how the characters vary. Also the variery of runestones (thanks to Scyberdragon for asking about the terminology on Twitter) combined with skills makes the gaming experience way different too. So i'd say its both a matter of "many uber characters" and way different gameplay along the way.
Lot's of alts? Why on earth would I ever want that when all my end game gear is going to bind and I could just respec.
Because Bashiok already said that respeccing won't work like it does in Diablo II. I believe he said it will be very limited, within a range of skills and a certain number of points per skill. Although some of the respecs will be easy to get, still others will be more challenging.
Can't find the source at the moment, though I know it was fairly recent. Within a month or so, I think.

You can still farm gear for your other characters in D3. It's BoEQUIP not BoPICK. So you can use the gold of your high level toons to twink gear for your low level ones.
Also, as D3 is planed to be a BoE imo drop items in D3 will surely be alot easier. It's impossible for a person alone drop zod-like stuff in D2, but this stuff exist because there are a bunch of players farming and the same zod-like items will travel from character to character. W/o this kind of trade, high end gear need to be a little easier to find, so i can at least drop something good and trade for something good i will use.
And I'm against rushing anyway. Imo rushing ruins the game as cheating do. Test and play a fully geared/leveled character is extremely cool for 5 minutes. Build a character is not only theorycraft - the process of leveling, finding places to farm, choose the order of your skills, testing gear to beat Hell... This is the real fun to me.
