going over this just once my first thoughts were. wow, 60! this sounds like its gonna be a short game or its gonna take a long time to get a lvl up. but then i came to the conclusion that with the new stat system. probably a lower lvl cap is better. as said in the post "you get more power each time you level" which makes me think that you get a good amount of stat placement for each level.
hope this makes sense. 2 am and been up since 6 am. XD
I am a die hard diablo fan while also rotten to the bone WoW hater.
Naturally, the more and more comparatives there is between the new diablo and wow the less excited I got for the new game. And we have to face it with a level 60 cap, it simply just screams WOW!!! Any other number could have done the trick, be it 63 or 66. Hopefully the next official blizzard quote won't be anything like this: HEY guys, now you can go fishing or bake your own cake, in-game!
At first I didn't like it, but after reading the explanation, it perfectly makes sense. I'm especially looking forward to having each levelup mean something. Because, let's be real, in D2 there were only a few occasions where gaining a level meant a notable difference for your character (gaining level 30 for example).
The only thing I'm worried about is this: in D2, it was almost impossible to reach the max level without spending a lot of time doing specific runs. That also meant that in theory, your characters never felt "finished". So everything you did still kinda made sense, because you could still use the xp.
But in D3, when we reach level 60 at the end of the game, won't that mean we're less motiviated to keep playing with that character? It's like.. it's finished, it's done. Even the search for better items won't matter too much, because your character already reached max level.
One way around this would be some end game content only available to lvl 60 characters. That would make reaching lvl 60 feel like a pass to some other special activities.

Also sorry for the whining
But you can see with the way the stats are going to be working that 100 is too much, while something small like 20 just won't be the style of Diablo. It won't be enough. So they need something in between, and when designing the levels to work best, they wouldn't be thinking "ok we have to work around the number 60 because this is the wow level cap and we just can't have that" no, they don't do that.
Hey guys we can ride our epic hippogryph mounts once we reach 60. Something to look forward too in diablo 3. We can fly them over rainbows and stuff. Can't wait for that!
That pretty much sums up the entire decision on them making the level cap 60. Jay Wilson and all the WoW fanbois strike once again into the hearts of diablo fans everywhere. When are true diablo fans going to say enough is enough? Only time will tell..

true fans are all honking their horns and firing their guns at the revelation of what further structure the game has. this dev team is something awesome in what they are bringing to the table. blizzard dont follow trends, they set them
theyre not the first to really take something and make it better. embrace the changes dude
Embrace the changes? You mean play world of warcraft... Sorry but I will pass on that, not because world of warcraft is a bad game but because I've already played too much of it and I don't really want to be reminded of it constantly in another game (diablo 3) that shouldn't have nearly all the similarities that it already has in regards to world of warcraft. I mean a level 60 cap? They could have made it 85. Why 60? Are they retarded or what?
^ Completely agree about the expansion.
Secondly the reason I feel they have given a level cap , cause it automatically doubles up like a skill cap.No more skill tree means no more synergy which allowed for 20+ points in single skill. You can have only 60 points spent in skills. They cant afford to balance it to 99 with all the modifiers they are including.

This has to be the most brain-dead posts I have read on the internet in a long time.
I had a response typed out, mainly pointing out that you didn't have flying mounts at level 60 and that vanilla WoW wasn't the stigmatised mess that WotLK turned it into but you're not worth it.
If you feel so strongly that using level 60 as the cap is copying WoW, don't buy the game. Please don't. The playerbase will be better off without you.
i think they should remove the numbers 60, 70, 80 and 85 from all future Blizzard games that arent related to Warcraft because they all remind of World of Warcraft /facepalm
seriously now, what's more important? a game that will be balanced and interesting up to end-game or a game that has a number people like because people like it?
*edit* did that last part make any sense? i almost loled at my english.
it going to be fun trying get to level 60 befor some one bring hacks it to the game and **** it up for all of us that like the game
Im not so much worried about hacks on Bnet, altho i agree it could really ruin the expirence. I wish they could come up with a way to stop people from selling items. Way back when i had that idea where really good items would bind to your account when you picked them up. so like if you had a Barb, but found something really good for a wizard, you could still use it.. ahh fuck it, it was a dumb idea, you get the point tho. its just a game, why do i let shit like that bother me? im rambling now, this is pointless, carry on.

I like this.. you don't ding levels all the time.. gaining 1 level should be slower and when u finally get level up it rewards a lot more than now in D2.
Also in D2 your character was pretty much done when u hit 80.. it could do almost anything already.

you know, just because you have an aversion to number 60 it doesn't mean that blizz can't use it.
Also, you said it yourself that they could've made it any other number. so why not? because you have some issues with number 60? give me a break.
he was joking, using the 85 bit... you need to play moar wow =D cos wow is the besterest... if you like warcraft lore or grinding (with new and more interesting quest content!) to be a little more powerful

i toats aggree, i dont like having to ding before having to worry about death and loss of xp in d2. and it will be nice to have the top level a little more reachable before focusing on the aim of the game, puwarful itumz etc... not that it wont be hard to reach
Oh, great. Another game where they try to control too much what is going to happen instead of making something and letting it grow with the community. You know what that makes? Games that gets boring fast. The actual level cap is of no concern to me: its how it looks like they want the experience to be specific, that they calculate every move and make everything so that it fits exactly.
In multiplayer games, other players decide what "happens", I.E. the builds and playstyles for everyone to copy, the most desirable weapons. It's near equally as out of hand of any individual player that comes along, with the aggreated work of a few early community members determining everyone else's experience. The difference is that what the "players" make is usually a small handful of cookie cutters or highly repetitive activities like boss runs, because that is what emerges as the "best" when you just roll some random numbers instead of a developer trying to balance things... the latter of which only happens when they can control and test for most variables.
You are spot-on in recognizing this team is taking a far more "structured" approach to the endgame than D2 did, but considering the joke of (im)balance D2 endgame has always been, I find that very welcome.
I'm not in disagreement with you, but I think there's a balance in between to be achieved. Despite what happened with D2, I've seen games (though my best examples would be some not very well known MMORPGs) which would have been nothing if the game was designed the way Blizzard (and other developpers) design their games.
Even if D2 had repetitive boss runs and rushing all over, it was such a grand hit. Why? Yes, there are major flaws that appears after years, but what we can't prove is, what if the game was designed with a lot more structure? Would it still has the same feeling and charms? I believe not, far from it.
Its hard to put these thoughts into words anyway. A few lines to resume my thoughts:
A game with too many rules and restrictions is a game without a "soul". A game with a "soul" is one that feels more than "just another game" because it was designed with passion and not with restraint. A game with a "soul" is a work of art (and I'm not just talking about the visuals/graphics). A hint: most games, especially in the last decade, are "soulless" by my definition and opinion.
I couldn't agree more to anything on this site and one reason why I'm going into computer programming and visuals to make GOOD GAMES AGIN. The funny thing is people don't realize the programmer has all the power...for one it will "feel" almost like you are trying to get to 99 even tho its only 60. I am not saying we will be grinding like in D2 but people don't realize that in the gaming world the programmer owns everything they can make 10 lvls feel like 99 or 99 lvls feel like 10 it doesn't matter its all about numbers and how they want it to "feel". the only thing I like about this news is it at least tells us there is gonna be 2 expansions or more...that's it...
yes it will "feel" like you getting "more" from each level...the thing is why not do it for 99? or 70? or even 65? get my point they can make it "feel" like you are getting ALOT done in 60 levels...or 70...or 80... I personally think the only reason why they are doing this is to "give" more content or "feel" like they are giving more content because you got 10 more levels and a new act in the expansion...which I don't mind....its not that bad...this whole post was to agree and to let people know that it doesn't matter they could still make it 99, a little less grinding and still add the same type of end game...
we will see... ethier way it will be a awsome game
ps someone ragging on this more then me he said something like the tree skills the purple items and level caps from wow something like that...not to burst ur bubble but....alot of features from wow originated from D1 D2 and LoD and as for alot of other games and just like MOST GAMES. If I make a game right now I would put aspects of other games into that game because i liked it and thoses games where or still are fun to this day...hence the talent trees in WoW came from Diablo universe its self no if ands or buts... blizz said them selves on that one...Meaning I bet you that there was at least one guy out there waiting for wow to come out and seen the skill trees and hates diablo(idk how anyone can...). He would say something like *holds nose(do this for real and read whats next out loud u will get my drift ;)) "OMG thoses talent trees look just like diablos skill trees HOW GAY"... LOL

Now that I think about it, you're right. WoW has borrowed a LOT from D2/D1, so taking something from WoW isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's just trolling and fanboyism. Lol, who honestly cares what game people play? Your nerdiness is better than another's? Come on, lol.
I'm more excited about the hint Bashiok gave in his last post: "There'll be different end game content than D2. That'll remain mysterious for now."
yes thats what im excited about too but the onlything i just dont want to beat the game in a week and be like WOW THATS IT....this is the most excited ive been about a game EVER...and to me when i got a 99 it felt more like i got something done espically since i played ladder(even tho they wont have a ladder...)
Guys are right diablo was before wow, you can say diablo > wow, you won't make a mistake ; )
i'd rather say Diablo =/= WoW to make it more valid
each has its own good and bad things and even though WoW got more from Diablo (and Diablo II) it still doesnt change the fact that if some features fit, they're good for the game no matter which game they come from!

all im saying is that the reasons they stated is not the "main" reason its really to make it eaiser to add content in future expansions...they could do the same things rather it was 99 60 or even lvl 1 lol
~Mike~
there was something else i wanted to add but forgot HAHA
I REMEMBER NOW LOL
i think really they are now working on ideas about expanion and that is a influence. Personally that whole thing with that guy posting that pic on the internet from gamestop (rather its true or not) but that came out like 6 months ago or more and half the games on their no one knew the release dates to and almost all of them that I can see are ethier on the dot or a few months/days off it says 3/1/11 for D3...personally i still think 6/29/11 but who knows sorry for off topic trying to mention it for the expansion part on why they are doing lvl caps...who knows we will find out ethier way HAHA
For me this is awesome news. A level 60 cap means they can add extra levels in expansions, wich is a feature that i particulary love in wow and any other rpg.
Very sweet news.

Although I can see that they wanted to make it 30 in Normal, 20 in Hard and 10 in Hell so 50 wouldn't have worked.
