Happy Halloween Diablo fans! To celebrate the momentous annual occasion, today we have a special little article commemorating the most frightening places in Sanctuary, as per some lengthy discussion and input from all of the DiabloFans staff. Read on to see what you agree with, what scared the shit out of you, or what was the equivalent of the fluffy white bunnies in Act V.
This is an unprecedented favorite among many of us for its ghoulish darkness, in which lurked any number of countless horrors. Only the lid on the hellhole that is Diablo's endless labyrinth, the Tristram Cathedral was originally a construct of the Horadrim, which used it to conceal Diablo's Soulstone.
A couple levels down in this horror of darkness and mystery resides the Butcher and his gruesome meat locker. See our Diablo & Hellfire forum for more discussion on these areas.
Pits of stagnant blood and gore, piles stacked high with bleached corpses, mad devices of torture, and pits of spike, metal, and darkness plagued this area from Act III of Diablo II. Mixed in to the madness of endless horrors was the glint of the sharp knives of the Bone Fetish, bizzare creatures of reanimated bone, and Vampire ghouls, their creeping, bony bodies curtained with shreds of cloth and their eyes a burning red.
On the final level dwelt the Prime Evil Mephisto, Lord of Hatred, and it was evident his hatred had met countless thousands from the moat of crimson that split the floor in two and the bridge of bone that Diablo, the Lord of Terror, himself, transversed.
Deep, deep down in the suffocating darkness and amidst the nosferatu of the most devilish kind laid the Chamber of Bone, the personal vault of Diablo and a place of darkness, gloom, and death.
A twisted gateway of dark, Gothic stone inlaid with human skulls and heralded by consuming pillars of fire and an endless sea of molten lava ridden with the damned greeted adventurers bound for the last bastion of Diablo, his Chaos Sanctuary. Strewn about the broken floor lay the remains of would-be heroes. Chained to torches and pillars alike were writhing, naked, and mangled bodies of the condemned. Hosts of Diablo's private minions littered the Sanctuary, Oblivion Knights with demon magic at their command, terribly immense Venom Lords that spewed fire from their maws, and the ghastly floating specters, the Storm Casters, with their vile soul-seeking flames of malice.
In the center of the fortress lay waiting the pentagram, framed by pits of fire. When all of the diabolic seals of the hellhold were activated, the atmosphere would redden with bloodlust (3D mode only), the screen would shake, and the voice of Diablo beckoned heroes to their deaths, a final chord in a hellish symphony, "Not even death can save you from me."
So, what would be on your list of horror sites in the world of Diablo?
I read it for my girlfriend, since I have this radio-dark-movie-voice ^^ and was thinking of contact Blizzard and see if they would like to use my dark gothic speech for their vocal storytellers in D3. LoL.
Uhm... I forgot the question now Awsome post!
Oh Yeah. It would be nice to see the classic view of Hell, the lava, the tormented souls, fire, forks and flying demons that shit fireballs... or something. The Real Hell, if it will appear! But i doubt since reading Jay's comment, it's only Tristham that will be revisit. (!?)
Nice article, although I would probably say that every area in Diablo had it's own brand of scariness though the catacombs on a whole were probably the most frightening. I probably would've talked about them more than the dungeons.
I would also nominate those swamp dungeons from act 3 for a mention. Nothing in Diablo 2 ever induced the same fear as the places from Diablo but these dungeons were suitably dark and prison-like. Speaking of prisons, maybe the jails from the Monastery should get a runner up position too. They were very well done.
Some funny nouns going on in there (nosferatu of the most devilish kind hmmm?) but I appreciate the chance for this discussion. Oh, and I'm loving the new avatar Seth although I'll miss the cuter hamster of before. Still this one's more Diablo-like.
I definitely agree with all of those choices, though I would've put Ureh on the list without a doubt, .
Yeah... About that... I was going to put all... Was it 15 or so of them? I just had to work tonight. Typing this stuff doesn't pay my college or insurance bills, nor gas
I'm glad you all liked it. Now I just have to figure out how to relate Diablo to Thanksgiving and Christmas
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I LOVED THE CATACOMBS AND CAVES!!!!! Those were some prerty intense levels in Diablo.

Good to see you got the point

I wish you would have had time to do the rest of them.
Also fixed redirects again, all links should work (except for Horadrim which we seem to lack an article on).
