We recognize that the item hunt is just not enough for a long-term sustainable end-game. There are still tons of people playing every day and week, and playing a lot, but eventually they're going to run out of stuff to do (if they haven't already). Killing enemies and finding items is a lot of fun, and we think we have a lot of the systems surrounding that right, or at least on the right path with a few corrections and tweaks. But honestly Diablo III is not World of Warcraft. We aren't going to be able to pump out tons of new systems and content every couple months. There needs to be something else that keeps people engaged, and we know it's not there right now. We're working toward 1.0.4, which we're really trying to pack with as many fixes and changes we can to help you guys out (and we'll have a bunch of articles posted with all the details as we get closer), and we're of course working on 1.1 with PvP arenas. I think both those patches will do a lot to give people things to do, and get them excited about playing, but they're not going to be a real end-game solution, at least not what we would expect out of a proper end-game. We have some ideas for progression systems, but honestly it's a huge feature if we want to try to do it right, and not something we could envision being possible until well after 1.1 which it itself still a ways out.
Do you think Blizz might change their strong stance against D3 PvP becoming competitive in order to give players something to do as endgame?
They've changed their stance on 1000000000000000 other things, so I don't see why not. Discuss.
That's their only option other than adding some kind of ladder/reset system to the PvM side of the game. Killing each other just for the sake of doing it will last exactly as long as roflstomping demons with good gear after finishing the game on Inferno.
Except that PvP tends to get a lot more frustrating a lot faster, if it's not properly balanced. Knowing Blizzard, it will certainly not be properly balanced. So if they don't add a decent public ladder system either, I'd bet quite a bit of money on it that PvP will be even worse than PvM, when it comes to keeping the players in the game.
Yea... I'm pretty much done until PvP patch. This game just doesn't entice me enough to play consistently like D2 did. Will probably still be around these forums but I'm gonna be checking out this new SMITE game. If anyone plays, add me - Savages
yeah because blizzard always sucked at balancing lol
btw that was sarcasm
Yes they're quite good at it tbh. Anyone who played a lot of SC or WoW would vouch to that.
Might not happen overnight but they know how
As I said before, they're quite good at it with Starcraft (although that's only because of the Koreans and their tournaments which they monitor). But World of Warcraft? I haven't played in a year or so, but WotLK and the first year of Cataclysm was complete brown water trash.
i don't think they need some grand scheme for adding content. if they put out a content patch each month that added an extra map or dungeon that would be cool. new random events and quests would be nice.
i guess they'd rather have a huge progression path of some kind. seems like it might be clunky since they didn't build d3 with that in mind.
I think Blizzard has shown a certain propensity for whoring the focus of their games out to whatever the majority of their subscribers want. With D3 not being subscription based, though, it's questionable, since all sales will be from initial purchases and the RMAH.
goals in D2 was:
* lvl 99.
* pwn them nuubs in pvp.
d3 misses both.
so yes, pvp will be the saviour of d3
Leveling to 99 was never my goal. Horrible masochistic grind, I usually got bored out of my mind somewhere in the 80s. Thank god in heaven they removed that.
A lot of people talk about games (D2 included) being "about" PVP because that's what they spent a lot of time doing. But the games were never designed as PVP games at all. It's just that there was nothing else to do.
I remember D2 PVP, there was precisely 0 thought put into that. They took their game which was designed entirely for PVE and let you change a flag so you did the same damage you did to NPCs to players, and that was it for 7 years. I really hope they actually make it a game in its own right this time (and remotely balanced so it's not just cheap 1-shotting 24/7).
I am pretty certain that PvP will either make or break Diablo 3.
My prediction...PvP will breathe new life into the game. People that quit because of no end game will come back so that they can try to beat up on some noobs.
People will try their best to make it competitive, but I think it will just be a huge zerg fest with tons of deaths and big explosions. It will still be fun though!

Because of the balance issue in Diablo3. I hope they add PVP only equips. That way you can only wear those equips when going in queue for PVP. And we have a secondary equip tab for PVP

They always did. The only exception was and is Starcraft.

Along the way, you'll watch a bunch of your favourite PvE abilities get mangled in an attempt to balance PvP, as is the status quo for WoW.
