So, inspired by the last sentence in this post, and realizing that Blizzard is currently willing to take drastic measures for the sake of the Diablo game experience (kill the AH, make all legendaries BoA), let's talk about magic find.
I feel that in all the discussion about Loot 2.0, Paragon 2.0, RoS, and the improved drop rates, magic find has been neglected. Magic find has evolved too far away from its initial idea. So, what was the initial idea? Let's take a look at a discussion from 2009 that contains a bluepost form Bashiok (original source not online anymore, of course):
I think the trick with magic find, or any sort of tertiary stat that doesn't directly relate to player power, is to make sure that it's an actual trade off. A lot of times and specifically for certain classes in Diablo II you could stack magic find and still be perfectly able to fight and kill. So what it really comes down to is properly weighting stats on items and ensuring that if you do want to stack something like magic find, that it's clearly going to limit your power in downing enemies. Auto-stats to a degree also help out in this regard as you can't effectively stack stats as easily to offset the loss of stats coming from items that might otherwise help keep you alive or kill at an acceptable pace.
That said magic find isn't fully drawn up yet, there's not a complete pool of itemization where we can begin tweaking balance to a degree where we can ensure MF doesn't get out of hand. It could turn out that we need to take an alternate approach, but, if I had to guess simply weighting the stat properly would be enough.
Soon after the release of D3, Blizzard realized that this "balance" didn't work. People were constantly switching gear because 300% magic find was just something you couldn't neglect when killing a monster; after all, it's 3 times more loot! So, they looked for an "alternate approach", and since there was also a lack of endgame goals for high-end players, they invented paragon - paragon 100 would be something that many players need to spend a lot of time on to reach, but once you're there, you absolutely need no magic find on gear anymore. Since Diablo is a loot-based game that is all about killing monsters and finding items, reaching high paragon levels became almost a necessity.
Now, paragon will be revamped again, and magic find will not be an innate stat you earn as your character progresses, but it will be a choice again. Magic find will be placed on the Adventure Tab, and the other choices will most likely be increased resource regeneration, pickup radius, and movement speed. We can't say much about increased resource regeneration, but pickup radius has always been a luxury stat (unless you are a witch doctor) and movement speed can be capped with two items (subject to change as they're working on caps in RoS, but it won't be 100%). We could discuss at length if this is a "choice", what choice one would make, and if it still justifies this solution. We can't make any definite claims as we have no idea yet if paragon level 200 (to max out MF on paragon) will be reached in a couple of days or not in less than a few months.
One thing we can say though is that magic find got out of hand. As of now, the cap (including MP, NV5, and gear/paragon) is 680% - it's just too much. Think about it: two people with same DPS and EHP make their way through sanctuary, only that one of these two finds almost six (!) times more loot than the other. How is that still "balanced", to tie this back to Bashiok's initial statement? How is this justified? It's like "should I max MF or not, in which case I need to increase my DPS from 100k to 600k". Not really a choice here. Plus, the gap is just too large; in D2 people with extremely high MF couldn't have the highest DPS in game. In D3, thanks to MF on paragon, MF is not a gearing choice for high-end players anymore. It just comes "for free" with progression.
Magic find needs to go. It got out of hand; it's not a choice anymore, but a necessity (on lower levels) and a freebie stat (on higher levels). It creates a magnifying effect for the problems that split the community. Remove magic find from the game.
tbh i think magic find should be a choice on gear, specially with the secondary and primary stats in items, but make it cap a little lower, like pr3ach3r said 100% max MF on items or something.
Although i would not be against it being removed from the game tbh.

@ OP totally agree with you, I was thinking about it the other day myself, It needs to be either complete gone, If they do loot 2.0 good enough, we should not need magic find.
Or keep it as a inherent bonus to paragon level as it is now and keep the cap at say 300% at paragon 100 and that is it (no change from change in difficulty), otherwise there will be the gear swap issue again.
This would be ideally fair to everyone, as it is not very hard to get to 100.
I like how MF feels. My current favorite Secondary stat (on my Wizard) is MF. It's both because I'm not Paragon 100, and because there's this warm feeling that I get when I have some MF.
I don't even get extra Legendaries, in fact in the last 4-5 farming sessions I haven't gotten a single Legendary.
I just like the feeling that somewhere in my character, deep down, there is this lucky factor. Even if it has absolutely no effect on gameplay.
I understand your critique, and even agree with it to a point, but the stat to me has a very nostalgic feeling. I wouldn't really like to see it go.
To me it just feels like they are trying their best to make everyone as happy as possible. It is a compromising of everyone's wants.
The other part is that maybe the team that designed this game really didn't think of everything. And by getting feedback from this community they've actually been able to put together a solid expansion and patch to provide its users with some real content.
From what I'm seeing nothing is changing over night and they are giving it some serious thought. Without actually playing any of these changes how do we know for sure what is going to work and what isn't.
I'll say that it looks good! For me I wish I had more time to play it but with a newborn and new job / family I find cannot.
However if anyone would like to employ myself at a 55000 per year rate to play video games (I'm pretty good I must say) I would surely oblige.
Well, this thread started a day before Wyatt said on Reddit(?) that MF will get diminishing return on rares and legendaries so Blizzard agrees what this stat is way too importan to pass on in a loot hunt game, expecially when good items are rarer than finding another planet similar to Earth.
If this news wouldn't come up, the first points i would have put in the utility tab for Paragon 2.0 would have been Magic Find.
I know there will be a separation between Primary and Secondary Stats, but i still don't know how it will work exactly, but probably MF won't be such a burden in our gear as it is now, when we have to sacrifice defence and offense so much to increase the chances of loot.

This is incorrect. Magic find affects the stats roll and number of affix. Bonus loot does increase loot drop, not magic find.
Wow, I'm impressed. I totally disagree.
To me, Magic Find is an integral part of the Diablo franchise. It's the perfect tradeoff stat. Between different "power"-stats there will always be one that increases power more, so there's not really a decent choice between crit % and attack speed % for example. The choice between increasing power and getting higher quality loot is not that easy. Creates some actual *cough* variety. Though you'll ultimately want both, which is also good, that's more to aim for.
Also, the tradeoff aspect aside, Magic Find by itself is a fun stat. I really like the idea of such a luck stat, a stat that can be very desired in one aspect of the game (farming obv.) and not interesting at all in another (killing ubers, pvp).
There is only one big issue that got it somehow removed from D3V, which is gear swapping of course. They were right to pull the plug because of that but now that they have more options, they gotta come up with a fix for that. Be it as simple as no gear swapping out of town. Wouldn't be enough to completely negate gear swapping, but they're getting paid to come up with ideas, I'm not

I think you need more [b]magic find[/b] for the magic of BBCode to work.
Wow. The reply blocks are so huge and (design-wise) dominating the discussion... almost let's my own text disappear into oblivion...

Yeah I agree with you. Just thinking gearing a follower with mf gear gives you 20% mf max, 20% mf out of 685% cap (near that) isn't a lot lol.
