So I have been coming up with all dem names for my characters. It's kinda been springing on me that naming my character is more or less useless because it's my account name or battle-tag or something OTHER than my character name that shows on everything. Kind of takes away from the "my char is a boss" feel. (I know that the name shows up when my character actually speaks in-game, but that's not what I'm striving for).
I understand that the account name clarifies and simplifies many of the interactions, but at least the in-game party chat or something could use your actual characters name. Not the most dramatic and important point of criticism, but if I am to put hundreds of hours into my character just to farm items, I'd like at least his-her name to be out there. The D2 Lobby more or less did that back then. Now there's gotta be another way for it.
Otherwise, I see no point in the naming option. May as well just give gibberish names from now on, or simply call my monk "monk".
Thanks for reading. Again, this isn't too dramatic of a deal, but I'd appreciate your input.
I agree, it's very annoying. All my characters are named Seditiar, and my battletag is Seditiar as well. But a lot of friends have different names for different characters, which do not show up. At all.
Lylirra, can we get some clarification on where character names show up vs. Battletag? Sure thing! When Diablo III launches, your character name will be visible to you in a variety of locations including the character selection screen and game menu. For other players, your character's name will only appear within your player profile, as hover text the friends list, and when your character participates in quest dialog. In every other context, your BattleTag will be shown.
Also, just to clarify, your BattleTag identifier (the numbers appended to the end of your BattleTag nickname) will only be visible in the "Add Friend" dialog and on a player's profile page. When you're just playing normally in a group, only your BattleTag nickname should display.
So Bashiok basically lied then? No, but we did miscommunicate, and that's our bad.
To help clear up that confusion, the current design is something we feel pretty confident in. Even after carefully reviewing all of your feedback and analyzing the pros and cons of the system, we found that BattleTags are a better way (overall) to personally identify individuals from game to game, even if they change characters.
It helps players build up street cred, or even the opposite type of experiences where you'd want to avoid another player entirely -- something that would only be possible with an account-wide nickname. As a result, we felt that confusing BattleTags with character names in Diablo III was detrimental to those types of benefits.
We know that some of you may disagree with that approach, and that's totally fine. We just encourage you to give BattleTags a chance when Diablo III releases so you can see how the system works in the actual game environment. You might find that you actually like it! Or, you might not, and we'd love to hear your feedback either way.
No, but we did miscommunicate, and that's our bad. Specifically mine. Sorry. :\ To reiterate what Lylirra said, this is the initial implementation and we're very open to feedback once the game launches and everyone has had more time to mess around with things. Just hold up, give it a chance, and then let us know how it's working out for you after release.
Terrible decision.
I guess instead of coming up with a creative name for each of my characters, I'll instead randomly smash my keyboard with my fist to generate a name. Character names will still be displayed in a number of locations, and more to come, including the website. I'd highly recommend you not do that.
I also wish character names would show up (not that it matters much for me [same battle tag and character names, minus a few "GearHolder" and "DfansGear" names). But at least they will show up on the website =P
so actually, now that it has been out for 2+ months.. you can give some constructive feedback..saying it has not grown on us.
Thanks for the reference Molster. I understand where they are coming from with this. Universal identification makes things "easier", but at the complete disregard that it makes character names obsolete.
D3 already feels a lot less "open" to public as D2 did, and that is even though D3 is online only (the irony). It also makes sense that people like to represent and showcase their awesome characters that they put time into leveling and gearing with. This will even more so be the case with PvP. Replacing all their names with streamline identification takes something away that it doesn't compensate for, as subtle as it is.
It's not that I want to get rid of the BattleTag, I just think it's jurisdiction shouldn't be in-game. It makes sense for the friends list, but that's about it. Some people might not want everyone to know their BattleTag anyhow? Just as it's optional to put it on these forums, it should be optional in game. If someone wants to add me, they can feel free to ask for the BattleTag.
If anything, the BattleTag should be a useful tool for people to have an extra line of defense against other players they may not want to interact with after initially meeting in an open game. If I don't have someone's BattleTag, I cannot molest them further after they have CHOSEN to not give me their BattleTag.
I also wish character names were under my heroe's portrait. Having every character with the same "tag" is annoying to me, takes away the satisfaction of choosing a fitting name for the character.
I wish we could at least choose it, wouldn't hurt at all.
I really don't care, even though I quite enjoy giving my characters cool names. It's just not that big of a deal, and certainly not something worth complaining about. I see my character names, and that's good enough for me. I don't need everyone else to see them too.
I complained about this in beta but Blizzard thinks they know best. I still feel the same way, shocker I know. It doesn't really matter though. There's so little reason to play with a group in Inferno that people wouldn't see my character name anyway
I'm sorry, but the most important place to display the character's name is IN THE GAME, IN MY PARTY. I hated it in the closed beta on my sister's account (yes, we play each other's accounts, please deal with it), hated it on open beta weekend on my own account, and still hate it right now. (Yes, hate is a strong word, and I use it intentionally.)
I take great care in selecting names that have meaning to me and that character is who I am when I am playing it. Silly RP, I know.
I'm not trying to burn the messenger into ash, but from my perspective this decision is quite upsetting.
If Blizzard had approached how it displayed user info differently, this would not be an issue. The problem in beta was that all you were seeing was the character name in the party but the player name on the town flag (that you could use to teleport to that player's current location). Of course people would be confused. My memory is a little muddled about what they did next in their experimenting, but I do recall that it was not much improvement. Then we got the current system... which I vehemently dislike.
they do feel very hidden, i like either or, showing my character name is nice so personal friends know my chars, but battle tags i like aswell in a larger perspective for knowing "popular" people ex. athene im sure we all know a few populars from other games
It's give & take. You get the name you want no matter what, but no one can see it unless you use the numpad emotes. I understand the frustration but there would be complains either way.

So nope, you are not alone, MarsMouth.
