Because the monk makes no sense in D3 to many Diablo fans. Diablo is about the gear grind so why in the world did Bliz choose a class that traditionally wears a diaper-looking outfit and uses no weapons? And where in the hell did this monk come from? Tokyo? Paladin would have been a much better choice than the monk. Same is true for necromancer vs. witch doctor. This will never change so the topics will never end. Accept it.
I remember this argument. I agreed with it, then...oh who was it...the guy who did the comics a couple years ago... I forget his name. He posted a thing about the warrior monks in the real world. The next guy replied that this is also a game and Blizzard can do whatever they want.
Yea...it's fun already knowing where these threads are going to go. Hehehe.
I really don't want to take sides, but the bolded part is ridiculous. It's like adding western-style characters to games like Dynasty Warriors and then saying that the world doesn't revolve around asian culture. Some games are based around certain cultures, and rightly so. Diablo has mostly been based around Christian mythology. I don't think I need to tell you what the word Diablo means...
because comparing whats reasonably acceptable in a fanatasy game and a game based on history is relevant right? heck, I've seen a strategy game series which specifically started centered around the history of medieval europe later have a title dedicated to the warfare in Japan [can't remember the title]
you know the part where you talk about how the game story started out solely centered [though I'd rather say that it just had 'loose connections'] around christian mythology? that was battered down in *gasp* Diablo 2
Why do people always picture leaders in heavy armor and big weapons. My type of leader is the WD, more tactics . Plus WoW already has a pally, if you wanna play one.

Most People Are Completely Ignorant To The Microscopic World Around Them -Me

Your thoughts dont qualify as 'many diablo fans'. Your argument about why monks dont fit with gear grinding has no backing besides the irelevant connection with outfit and weapon and also shows how ignorant you are about the game.
Both monk and witch docters are good additions to the game. The world doesnt revolve around western culture and many in the western world came to realize that. Blizzard being up with the times simply expanded the lore accordingly. Accept it.

Because a fictional game based on a fictional world with multiple continents and multiple cultures should obviously revolve around one real world religion, right?
I mean, why try new stuff? That might result in changing the game, and that would be bad.
As for Diablo, it is based on "Devil" which originally comes from Greece. The reason why you say Christianity is because Christianity is good at annexing ideas into it. Kthx.

I could see the Blood Elves' Blood Knight pre-Naru release style of Paladins. Something a bit more dark and sinister. A kind of Dark Knight. (Not named that, though, due to copyright issues.)
As to why people always picture leaders in heavy armor and big weapons, well that's what Hollywood has taught us is the leader, and because we as a species are generally incapable of thinking for ourselves, we just take what we are told and go with that.
i love diablo 3 and have been watching it very close but why isnt there a huge group leader like the paladin? i think he would have been great for pvp and boosting the party for bosses. the paladin ways always useful in d2 and always made things a little easyer for the group.
i would love to hear what anyone one has to say about this good or not. just my thought.
Maybe they are saving it for the expansion. He was my favorite char in D2 and I hope they bring him to D3 at some point....
The only thing I agree from this thread is that there is a lack of a shield wielding defense oriented class. And since the current balance of class is towards ranged [3 ranged 2 melee] I would also, as others pointed, vote that the most likely class for one of the expansions would be a shield wielder.
Just don't get your hopes of seeing a paladin. Not only were they doomed by the fall of Zakarum but the Templar killed any remaining chance for a christian belief based religious hero.
We do have the Paladin, as the Templar, though not playable it is available in terms of concept.
In addition, I speculate the addition of a more or less sinister class, one that had been damaged by the demons so much that, he/she only thrives for vengeance and is chaotic in its nature, that the vengeance is all that matters for the pain that have been inflicted.
Introducing the Dread Knight:
"The Paladins of the Zakarum, once the paragon of hope in the dreaded lands of Sanctuary were a beacon of light that swept through darkness and vanquished the bane of life. However, with the fall of the church and the destruction of worldstone, they were thinned in number as demons and cultists alike had sought them for vengeance.
Not all of them had been as lucky as the Templar who managed to escape with the help of valiant heroes. Under submission, they have been subjected to dark magics unspeakable to the most powerful of wizards, the goal was simple, to transform the banes of evil into its foremost champions. Ones that had already been weakened in their faiths were turned to ruthless killing machines wielding demonic power as of their own.
However, those who had not submitted break free in the wake of their new power, more of an abomination of dark energy, only seeking vengeance against those who had made him/her, and a being that matched the power of the lieutenants of the seven.
The Dread Knight is born, and vengeance on the evil has been sworn..."
Think of a shield and heavy armor wielding Warlock that can subdue lesser demons and transform into a form resembling greater demons, while can hold his/her ground against the hordes of demons as an indomitable fortress.
why no paladin? really? enuf with the pallies already... im glad they did the monk, its an awesome idea and with the same utility that the paladin offered except....ITS NOT A PALADIN!
They replaced the paladin with the monk. They give mantras i do believe to their team mates. The monk is quite different from the paladin. Considering they uses staves and use holy power if i'm not mistaken. I also like the fact that they use combos and martial arts to kill there enemies.

While reading that, the whole vengeance thing...I kept thinking of the Demon Hunter...
I could see something like that, but make the lore a bit more different from the Demon Hunter.
They added the Sorc and called it a Wizard. For some reason the barb is still the barb. Many characteristics of the paladin have been picked up by the monk. He's basically got the auras in the form of mantras, I don't know if you can equip a shield, but he can heal, he charges around, has an affinity for lightning in a few attacks, t-t. He's probably the third closest crossover from d2 to d3, if not fourth behind the demon hunter from the amazon.
Looking at the monk and all the cool martial art moves.. I am already in love with this class. Tbh I never liked the paladin, hammerdin, zealot, smiter..... to me they were all boring to play. But monk looks like a cool class to play fast, can heal, able to dodge. I predict this will play better than a pally.
