Yes, problems do come whenever you make a decision to use "new" tech. In the end, Blizzard probably looked at the number of people who wouldn't buy it (I'm sure a very small number) vs the headache of constantly trying to fight dupes/hacks, and decided online only was a better decision. And don't tell me a lot of people won't buy it because it's online only - look at the sales of of steam games. Sure steam has an offline mode, but that thing is buggier then Bethesda games.
blizzard stated they believe they will lose an estimated $3m in sales from making it online only. but project they can more than make that up and then some with the RMAH.
although they didnt factor in piracy, which now a days games that arent online-only get WAYYY more people pirating it then actually buying it. so IMHO they are making MUCH more by making it online only

Well thats the only good thing about online only. But there are a ton of problems that come with it, i doubt that onlyonline is a good decision they made.

As to the people saying
The problem is, that blizz did this probably because of RMHA. You will not make a expensive infrastructure (that costs a lot to maintain) for somthing like this because to stop haces. Especially if game has no competition and non ladder (like SC2). I think the only online is because of RMHA. And i'm a little scared what will happen if rmha dont brings enogh money to suport the infrastructure.
And also there are a lot of people that will not buy diablo 3 because of only online, But oits not that big number to the people that will buy and money they will get from RMHA.
I really hate the removal of the Pentagrams/christian references, as they were a big part of the earlier Diablos, and I think their removal was very hackneyed and given a poor excuse. This is a war between Heaven and Hell after all, albeit on a fictional plane...
What references were taken out, aside from less pentagrams? (And as far as I can tell, the only place they really aren't is the menu).
I was under the impression Blizzard removed all pentagrams from the game, as well as the crosses/burning crosses/crucifixions etc. from the game. I don't recall seeing any in my playthroughs, and according to their interviews, there won't be any "to make their world unique". If that is wrong, great!
I´ve also played beta and what i disliked the MOST of ALL is the following:
1: It shows your DPS instead of Damage. I know that alot of people here thinks that damage and dps is the same thing. The difference is. DPS = Damage Per SECOND. Damage: Your TOTAL damage. So seeing 15 dps makes you think...bah i want to see my damage, this sucks. Either remove "DPS" or add Damage as well or Diablo 3 will fail.
First, it does list damage right below DPS. It's just small. Second, I'm not really seeing why so many people want damage listed instead of DPS. It's easier to compare weapons, and I believe weapon speed affects casting speed, so it makes sense. The only question I have is for spells that do damage per second, is that a % of DPS or damage?
For me the DPS thing instead of damage makes it seem like they are simplifying it "too" much. It doesn't take much thought to compare two weapons damage and speed and come to your own conclusions about which is better. Plus DPS seems to be too much "metagaming" within the game. It is too much of a "gaming" specific term, if that makes sense, removing you from the "immersiveness" of the game. At the very least, I would rather it be of the same font size of all of the other stats, not taking prominence over the name of the item itself! I think it looks tacky.

I think a lot of people won't buy it due to online only. I know that I am hedging myself, although I am pretty confident that there will be a hack at some point to enable it. Right now, I don't think the pluses outweigh the minuses.

most of the game is checked server side. there is no way to "hack enable" offline mode. (you obviously have no idea what hacking even is). its not part of the system where you can go into the game code and change/add some things and presto it works. you can make servers and then play offline but GL on someone doing that soon after release.

What you're not understanding is that most of the important information (drop rates, loot tables, item data base, monsters and spawn points etc, etc, etc) is all controlled and only stored on the server. Your install client will NOT have this information. It has to ask the server this stuff to figure out where everything is and what drops.
Just because there are emulated servers for WoW doesn't mean they are any good. Have you been on any of those? They are total shit compared to the official servers. It will be exactly the same if there ever will be "hacked" servers for D3 and you'll probably still have to connect to a hacked server online anyway so what's the point?

I'm fairly certain that he is remembering those figures from the Extra Credits episode which deals with the D3 RMAH.
Yes. Yes, you are absolutely right....... Not one drop of blood in the game. Not even when the monsters explode in a...Oh, wait! A CLOUD OF BLOOD AND GUTS. Jeeez....
As you've pointed out its done to promote their RMAH, battle.net balance and to monitor your online behaviour. Funny f act though, games with online only requirements are also the most pirated ones.
Jay Wilson again doesn't understand the real problem behind it. Problem isn't that people don't have Internet its they don't want to use Battle.net and let Blizzard spy their behaviour or not being able playing the game, because the servers are down ...
Its not flaming or something. I just can't agree with this point. Blizzard want to make money, so they want to sell as much copies of game as they can. Online only prevent game from piracy. And other things like shared stash should convince every player to have his own copy of game.
Online only does not prevent games from piracy, and that is not the reason for implementing only online. Sharing stash doesn't have to do anything with only online. Emulating servers will be much more easier than WoW servers. The biggest problem to emulate will be advanced Ai. At the moment monsters just attack you from close, with no skills to use or anything like that. Drops, random areas, skills, quests, and thing like that will be easy to copy (create), and code.
But the moment the game is released, the really work will start for creating emulators, mods and other things.
I think the main point is, of course connected to RMAH and the auction house per se, but I think the reason is mainly to prevent cheating and hacking. That is ALOT easier to do when you can't have access to the entire game without Blizzards servers. That in turn does not only protect the auction house but the entire economy of the game, which I would say is a pretty big deal for a game based on grinding for items. There will of course later be emulators and such, but that is not a problem for Blizzard as long as they can protect the game environment for the people than want to play legit. I am fully aware that nothing is fool proof but at the moment, restricting the play to online only is certainly the best method of achieving this goal.

Well, I guess it's possible that any sufficiently advanced piracy is indistinguishable from magic the real thing, but I really do think that online only play is going to cut piracy hugely*. I think it's indisputable that since Blizzard definitely don't want their game pirated, the fact that online only mode will keep piracy to a minimum is a large part of the reason for its implementation. I'm not saying it's the only reason. But the RMAH definitely isn't the only reason either, and since we can't see into the minds of the devs, it's impossible for anyone to know which of those two justifications is foremost in their minds. I think there's a good chance they would have decided to go for online only play even if there hadn't been a RMAH. Even if there was only a gold auction house Blizz would probably have stuck to online only because otherwise the auction house would be BROKEN. So it's not just a money-making strategy, they haven't sold out. And honestly, if you don't like online play then you're entitled to your opinion, but the people who are overreacting and crying treachery and acting like Blizzard burned down an orphanage over this issue can cry me a river. Plenty of games support online play only and that's just a part of how games work these days. Get an internet connection that doesn't rely on tin cans connected by string, and then get over it.
I'm not suggesting that you, Ragnar, are one of those people, I haven't read the rest of your posts so I don't know your alignment. Just using your post as a springboard.
*I have pirated video games before, and I'd do it again. I bought the expansion CD for D2, but I borrowed the original disk from a friend to use for the installation. Years later, using a different pc, I downloaded several cracked copies of D2 and never regretted it. I've done the same with other games, too - even indie one's like Braid. I justify it by saying that I wouldn't buy the games even if I couldn't steal them, but there are times when that's probably not true. One thing I wouldn't do, though, is go to all the effort of finding and joining an emulator server, because it'd be way more effort for something not as good. Hell, I was willing to pay subscription to play WOW until I got bored of that. Online only play stops me from pirating games, an the statistics show that it works on a majority of other people too.
Here is the list of things that I don't like becose of online only:
-Because of only online we dont have mods.
-Because of only online you have limitations in game, like only 10 characters, smaller stash.
-Because of only online you will have lag
-Because of only online you cant play when you want where you want.
-Because of only online you don't own diablo 3, if somthing happens to servers or blizzard, you can kiss your money and game goodbye (it is almost impossible to happen, but it can)
What are the benefits of only online? Harder to hack. I would understand this if there is any competition in diablo 3 or lader, but the funny thing is, this is because of RMHA (that is also another problem).
Practically your paying 60 bucks for a game that you cant control, if blizzard decide to ban you from their server (mistake or on purpose) practically your being robed and is nothing you can do, you cant play it offline.
Is this a fair deal guys ? ok you can sue them but it will take some months, years maybe to solve the problem.
I don`t see the need of always online on this kind of games really really bad decision and they will loose many customers because of it.
Noone is forcing you to buy the damn game at all even if you so desire to play it (bad statement but true).
And blizzard won't change their minds, and good god for that. I DO NOT want a "manipulated" game in any way. It will completely destroy everything about the game - The item hunt leading to RMAH/GAH, Which is the part of the game that ppl will play it for.
Blizard will not change it, but i will in every possible way try to tell them and other people when they do somthing wrong.
When is ppl going to get over that offline thing. Wake up, its 2012, or do you live in the deepest forest of Africa or in Siberia? Ofc I can only speak for my own country that's Sweden. The internet is good here. But can it be THAT BAD at other places.
Yes, it is bad, THAT'S WHY PEOPLE ARE RANTING ABOUT IT. Go out of sweden and travel the world a little, and see it for youself what is the situation.

But as always. There MUST be ppl who moan about anything/something/everything that's negative for them.
And there are always people that except everything, is it good or bad.
Next time If you dont have anything smart to say, please dont posti, or if you angry go outside and run a circles or somthing.
I'm in a middle of Sahara Desert in Algeria. 1500 km from the coast, In Salah town to be exact. And I still have internet here (obviously, cause you can read my post). There is hardly fresh water and clean sheets, but there is internet.
It's online only, live with it :]
PS. Although I have to say that internet here sucks big time. So thankfully I'll be working here for two/three more weeks, and then go back home
And i'm in europe, on balkans, i didn't have internet until a year ago. Now I have 1 mb conection. There are a lot of people that dont have any internet, or have bad connectiona, saying otherwise is being naive.

The rest of the world can't really hold off technological development just because you are behind in the balkans, no offence
Should you ban all MMO:s aswell, since they require an internet connection?

The rest of the world? The rest of world does not have computer at all, or in best case have some old crap, because its luxure for what they don't have money. You and me are small part of the world.=)
Oh ragnar, your so smart dude! Nice way to go onto personal attack.
So I don't have the right to speak because you think i'm stupid?
Your so misleading the whole point about it is online only.
Think about it for yourself.
Never said that your stupid, but that you said nothing smart. If I insult you in a way, i'm sorry for that, but i dont like when people post somthing with no explanation, and say that wee live in 2012.
But ok, if you so dearly think Blizzard is doing this wrong by making it Online only. Then continue fight for your cause, but i'm afraid it's in vein..
I will, with every part of my soul, because I know how it feels like to have somthing that is normal in some countries.
