List what you think are the main things in today's games that wouldn't be around if it wasn't for diablo, or what kind of games wouldn't existed if it wasn't for Diablo?
Well in my opion it did a lot. For me it was the first in its genre that campture the essence of D&D style game. I grew up when home computers were just becoming available. Games came out like pong, logins run etc... I had a friend that invited me over and his other buddies and I was introduced to D&D and had a blast. But it was dice roll and mathmatics, Sort of like Stratomatic games for those of you who got no clue to what I am talking about. But when diablo finally came out we (my generation) was the 20 something crowd that bought Diablo and fell in love with it. It was the first that hit it spot on with feel, cinematics, music, lore, and the play style. The other games at the time did not match up at all. From that point on I was a Diablo fan forever. And of course in 2000 diablo II and LOD carry the torch onwards. So now in my early 40's and still going Diablo strong. That alone says a lot about a game.
Diabo may not have invented a genre but it certaintly affected gaming! if you were around the time it came out it really was one of the first Mainstreamish computer games. For those that werent overly interested in computers at the time since they were a lot less useful Diablo was one of the first main popular games. As well in general it was just an awesome game at the time and really had a great kind of new dark feel to it. As well the whole lot thing wasnt as popularized until diablo.
I believe that eventhough D3 didn't innovate that much it can be considered the main pillar for ARPGs... yes i know ARPGs existed before diablo but i think diablo added more ideas to the genre and the success of the game made it the benchmark for other ARPGs (think of it as COD with regenrating health, this type of shooters existed before COD but with COD success it was able to make it the norm of shooters)
also D3 with RMAH if it is a sccess i believe you will see many other games using RMAH.
(actually the more i think about it the more i find stuff they added to the genre and D3 will add even more)
Short A: Blizzard take old ideas improve and polish them and add there touch then provide the rest with the benchmark.
...And I wouldn't say the mojority of the D3 player base will be exclusively consisted of WoW players. Diablo has a huge player base, moreover many 'former' Diablo players went on to play WoW, and now that the new Diblo game is coming out, they will drop WoW like a hot potato.
This. If fact, I enjoyed Warcraft a lot better when it was an RTS
Sure I enjoyed games like Baldur's Gate, but Diablo kept me coming back for more. For me at least, Diablo was what got me hooked on the RPG genre of games.
Diablo didn't invent a genre it revolutionized it, this being the case of the Action RPG.
Pretty sure after Diablo 2 came out "the king of all action-rpgs to date" other similar action rpgs came out and attempted to capture the same feel such as Dungeon Siege and the like.
