Not to mention that this noticably reduces the size of the game on your computer. Not by like 50% or anything, but still, anything to make the game more accessible to lower end computers is good for the business aspect.
But I am in favour of online only as long as they give me an 'invis' mode so I don't have to reveal my presence online to others when I want to be antisocial.

...Well, thats what I call food for the fools.
The game's size will hardly matter. A 8 years old computer has a 80 gb hard drive and nothing is that small anymore, even for low end computer. And the very small amount you will lose (no, it won't even be 1%, keeping all the sizable stuff away such as graphics would be a giant drain on their servers) will not change anything.
SFJake... my 5 year old computer only has a 40 gig hard drive. Now, my new computer is running 2 terabytes, but it's ssd is only about 40 gigs so games I want to run well use that which is a fairly limited space. If it saves me a gig, that's a gig I can use for sometihng else.
REAL modern computers use SSD hard drives for their OS and games, and SSD hard drives are still quite expensive.

What? no. SSD drives at the moment are a luxury item. The ONLY benefit you will get from an SSD drive while gaming is faster load times. you'll shave off a few seconds, but once in game, you'll be on par with those outdate "non gaming" comps with regular 7200 rpm HDD's.
Yes, and loading times are the most frustrating times of gaming. Eliminating those makes gaming that much more fun - hailing back to the days of cartridges.

What??? Get real. Real modern gaming computers comes with:
--> a 2nd Gen. Core i-7 2630QM processor
--> a minimum, 12GB RAM (upgradeable to 16GB for laptops; 24 & 32GB for desktop computers)
--> has either a AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6970M Crossfire video card
or NVIDIA GTX 560M for laptops & GTX 580M for desktop computers
--> has 1TB Hard drive (2x 500GB at Raid "0" at 7200rpm) or 2TB for desktops
(SSD is optional & never a necessity)
You may have spent a lot of your wad on your SSD but that wont make a lot of difference performance-wise if your so called "modern computer" is not running on a Core i-7 with at least 12GB RAM on it,
not to mention, you might only have a Class 2 graphics card on it as well. http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-580M.56636.0.html
Check your specs first, if your "modern" computer doesn't even have these features, then whoever told you that it is modern just because of the SSD, just f'ked you up real bad.

Anyone who uses a prebuilt computer to define a 'modern gaming rig' is prettymuch automatically ruling themselves out as knowledgeable on the subject....... but that's off topic. And there's a difference between modern and top of the line. A 40 gig SSD isn't THAT expensive, but going much higher than that gets expensive. So no, I didn't waste a 'whole wad of cash'. I paid less for that than my 2 terabyte hard drive.
However, aside from the i7(which the difference between i5 and i7 is barely detectable unless you're doing a benchmark test and even then it's minimal), yes, my computer meets all of those specs. I didn't want to spend the huge difference in cost to get an i7 for a 0.01% improvement when I could spend it on much better places.
And who doesn't have more than 12 gigs of ram nowadays?
Hmm. Assuming I don't care for online play due to the RMA and the fact that I don't like Hardcore, explain to me what my motivation is for buying a product with DRM designed to shit on paying customers again? I mean, half the time I play SP games it's because I want something to play in my MMO downtime due to SPECIFICALLY the "online only" feature of MMO's. o.O
I'll have to stick with Torchlight and wait for Grim Dawn, I guess.
That's the best idea you've said so far. Hopefully all those still bitching around would do the same so that we'll have less whinners around.
Did rather extensive modding of D2 and played a number of mods as well. Spent alot of time offline because I can't stand public games nor the time limit on realm chars. I see this move dramatically curtailing D3's lifespan for me.
And we have another one ladies & gentlemen... "applaud" "applaud"
I travel a lot...a lot of my free time is spent at my in-laws place on the Navajo Nation. Where they live there are not ISP and cell signal is VERY limited. That being said, not having an true to form single player mode does blow IMO. But will it stop me from buying it, hell no. It's annoying but not a REAL problem.
You're the man! Hoorah!
To those who still don't get it. Even if you like playing off-line & solo mode, the Diablo III game wont change for you.
Just like Jay Wilson said, basing from the problems that they have seen with the Diablo II community & all the other Blizzard games, and to prevent these issues from being an issue on what they concluded as an enjoyable casual new type of game, they designed Diablo III to run on and only on a Client-And-Server based structure.
This has nothing to do with you thinking you're honorable & that you'll keep your word... you're just one of the MILLIONS of users who will be playing the game. So in general, for Blizzard to be able to protect the game & the community of honest players from those cheats, dishonorable & dishonest people who would do anything to hack the system, they implemented security procedures & protocols that would be able to prevent such issues, and the bottom line is, YOU HAVE TO BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE GAME ON BATTLE.NET, MAY YOU BE PLAYING SINGLE PLAYER OR CO-OP PLAY.
Now, if you're really one of those hard headed people with thick skulls that cannot accept the fact, then you have the choice & all the rights of not buying Diablo III & not playing it on-line.
So, for the naysayers out there, it's time to man up and start thinking on how you will be able to get that good internet connection, to be able to enjoy playing the game, may you be a soloist or in co-op mode.
Time to start checking for Starbucks or coffee shops near your place that offers free Wi-Fi connection or see your local library for posibilities. So that when the hardware compatibility issue comes up (with Diablo running on a new 3D engine & all for lusher graphics), you'll only have one other problem to worry about.
If you're using a desktop, then question will be, is how will you be able to acquire an internet connection:
1st. Pay your local internet & cable service provider for a new subscription.
2nd. Or you can purchase a LAN card & connect to your neighbors unsecured network.
3rd. Or you could bring your stuff & then go to a friends house, do a sleep over as long as he would let you & play with him co-op for hours day in, day out.
Whatever your solution will be, better get movin' while there's still lots of time before the game's release.

The only way to be safe with a unhacked release is to have online authentication
(like assasins creed and HAWX wich still isnt cracked today)
yes i agree we all HATE it, but instead of complaining come up with a solution!
And i think i have it...
********ONLINE AUTHENTICATION SHOULD BE REQUIRED ONCE A MONTH!*************
Steam uses similar to this idea where it downloads "login materials"
Many of my mates and me are in the army CANT play starcraft out field, this is disgustion not to be able to play
one of the greatest lan games away from the real world!
So lets get together and think of ideas that can work and defend the greatest game in the world from
pesky pirates the more money blizzard gets the greater our experience will be!

This debate is still going on? what is the point in proposing "solutions" to a non existent problem? Blizzard will not change the underlying method by which their engine works this late in the game. Always online is here to stay. Deal.

You're making huge illogical assumptions. At the end of 2010, the game was playable offline no problem. And I don't really see what difference it makes if they're not going to change it. "Suck it up" groups make me sick.

Are you referring to the Blizzcon builds? If so, even if they always intended to make it online only, those would have to be specialized code, since there are no servers running. They even said in one of the earliest ones that nothing was randomized. I'm not trying to say to suck it up, but the real client code always had to work offline until they were ready to have the servers..

YOU'RE making huge illogical assumptions, because the D3 team never said they had an offline mode planned. And ZombieMuse is right. In no way are Blizzcon demos a representation of how the game would be released. It's a demo. Things are built to work a certain way to show off the good points in a demo. More relevantly, though, the playable demos were not hooked up to servers-- not because the game had the ability to be offline, but because Blizzard had not constructed the server architecture yet. Why get servers running for a game that no one's even playing yet, know what I mean? They've probably had test servers running throughout the whole development period to get the server-client relationship working, but that's it.

I've included the asterisk simply because it's a good thing only if it stops botting, duping and hacking. Only time will tell.
If all that plagued Diablo 2 slowly works its way back into Diablo 3 then we've just lost a feature for nothing.
