Mercenaries in D2 were a dissipointment to me because the only type that was good was the Lut Gholein mercenary, and if you didn't load him up with expensive shit, he would die at the portal you came through. There are many problems that I hope they work out in D3 including them constently getting stuck, the overwhelming advantages of the Lut Gholein mercenary, and sucking at bosses. Face it, the only reason you spend 50k to revive your merceneary while fighting any boss is to spare youself about eight seconds untill getting attacked. Everyone also wishes that your mercenary will show the shit that it's wearing, it's just not as fun without it. So if you have any ideas I want to hear them and if D3 doesn't have mercenaries I will have to beat some ass!!
Agreed. Either they need to be stronger, cheaper, or come in sets. Any of these would make them better. Perhaps it should vary depending on what character type you play. Then they could be optimized based on what the typical character X needs.
The Act I merc wasn't that bad. She was the smaterst of all 4 (got stuck less, stayed out of danger more) and could but out some decent damage with a good bow.
Hmmm, dare I say make a mercenary that is controlled by an unkillable character owned by a Blizzard rep? Haha! Wouldn't that rock? Having a conversation with a person - oh wait! It's an NPC! Lol.
As much as i like the idea of more than one merc i feel that it could make the game a lot easier...think about it, you are a summon necro, you hire an act 1 merc with ice, act 2 merc with might already then u put pride on him, and u wear a beast....u have already stacked 4 auras, holy freeze, fanta, might, and concentration, and instead of cast decrepithy to slow down monsters u will cast amp...how easy would the game be then? thats only if u can hire 2 merc's, all i want them to do is to make the mercinaries much smarter than they were and can take in a little more damg, like immagine if the merc didnt attack someone if he had iron maiden cast on him, or if amp'd he would try to avoid damg, i can take all the act bosses easy with all merc's but thats thanks to the fort's and 20 dr ber'd gazes they all have on, so im not complaining there but i would like to see them smarter and a bit more customizable
I could see a two options:
1. Eliminate permanent mercenaries. Drastic, but meh...
or
2. Make mercenaries very strong, player controllable (see WAR and White Lions), and also make hiring them a penalty to your own hero (much less experience or something). Also make said mercenaries at least somewhat customizable so that they can be a part of a particular build.
Read the stuff in parenthesis.
And if you never played WAR, read up on White Lions.
Controlling a mercenary does not randomly upgrade the mercenary to the same level as the player. It's not like the merc won't have AI and I'll be able to tell him exactly where to go. Simple enough control to make mercenaries feasible, to tell them "retreat", "stand still", "attack this guy".
Also, Dungeon Siege and such suggest more than two, for the most part. I don't know many games that center on dual parties particularly. It's either one or many.
Don't jump to conclusion, please, if you don't understand something.
I would hate to have multiple mercs around u.u' It totally destroyed GW: Nightfall PvE.
Of course those followers are cool because they are linked to quests. They only follow you in a restrict area and automatically they design that area to be harder.
I also don't like mercs. It's like giving a summon power to all classes.
I don't like how Mercenaries homogenize the variety between the classes.
I'd prefer if they used a Guild Wars style system, where they count as an entire player, and you can build an entire party with them. Difficulty and drop rate would be adjusted for their presence. They could be prebuilt guys who select certain skills as they level (whirlwind barbarian, acid cloud wizard etc), or whatever. As you know, playing through the game with the same party is freakin' impossible without reliable friends, and simply almost impossible with; the "coincidence of wants" problem just destroys any possibility of this ever happening.
It'd be nice to fight alongside a Griswold or Farnham style NPC, though.

*Equinox is taken aback.*

But on-topic, I really liked how Diablo 2 had it, so I really don't want it to change, unless you can customize a little more.
who would ever do that?
