Baldur's Gate II has tons of quests, some main/story related, others minor/side quests. And you are forced to do a large chunk of them. Raise 20000 gp to get some information, aside from selling every single useless item you come across for a few gp here and there, and rack up a huge total, the only way to really earn the 20000 is to go out and quest for it, slay a dragon, save a town, destroy some evil cult's deity, break a siege of a castle. Hell i love doing those quests.
Diablo had some great quests too, but when you think about it, esp on maultiplayer, there is only a handful of quests you have to do.
Act I
- quest 6 kill Andariel, thats it. the rest are optional
Act II
-quest 2, quest 3 and quest 6, thats it. you dont have to kill the summoner, you dont even have to find Horazon's journal. If soloing you do, if on multiplayer, you can get someone who has done quest 4 and 5 to open the portal to the canyon of the magi, and you can run thru it.
act III
-quest 5 and quest 6
act IV
-quest 3
act 5
-quest 5 and quest 6
thats what 9 quests out of 27? (6+6+6+3+6 = 27) 1/3 of all the quest in the game.
spose thats better than Diablo 1, which out of 15 quest you only have to do 2. (Lazarus and Diablo)
but to get back to transistions between acts, yeh, i'd like to see more, like it's been stated previously, you can always take WPs on subsequent trips if you want to avoid the long way.
you should have been able to play during the caravan ride to act II, or the boat trip to act III. I dont mind the portal from act III to Act IV, as there really isn't a way to just walk to Hell, sure there are a few Hellsmouths, and the odd gate or two. I would have liked to trek from Kurast to Harrogath. slaying monsters along the way.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
yep. when you start to really think about them you dont have to do them. clear out the den, if you can find enough potions you dont need to go to akara in act 1 at all, thus she will never give you the den quest, and if you never go in ther either, you wont get that quest.
kill blood raven, why do I need to do that again, uh let me think, no i don't. resuce cain? uh he just identfies stuff, identify scroll that takes care of that. black tower, its a side stage well technically its 5 stages, but its optional so if you never go in there and/or never open the book in the stoney field you wont get that quest, horadric malus, you can just run straight for the stairs dow nto the jail instead of killing the smith. same goes for the other acts, most of the quests you can avoid doing.
its pretty much just the act boss quest you have to do to get to the next act. Andariel, Duriel, Mephisto, Diablo and Baal. plus maybe 1 or 2 other quests. Have to get the staff to open tal rasha's chamber, have to kill the high council so you can use the durance of hate lvl 2 way point (you don't have to smash the compelling orb on multiplayer), and kill the ancients in act 5 so you can enter the worldstone keep.

I'm a major Town Portal user I need Akara... Identifying without Deckard Cain is a pain. I guess I felt those quests were helping me and were a necessary part of the game.

i see your point, I was just stating those quests are infact optional.
Quick question: Should TP's stay when you save and exit?
if it's the same game, make a game "bob", exit then re-join the game called "bob", then maybe. otherwise I'd rather they dissappeared.

What about single player? Would TPs stay up in single player? Because, you know, it respawns all the monsters, so you make a TP in the Throne of Destruction...
i think they should have the cinematics but in the middle you could adventure. and then at the end of the adventuring you could have another cinematic that shows you that you have come to the next town.
As far as more discovery and exploration, I hated act III. The swamp was a maze of make me mad things. I like the idea of being on the caravan and having to disrupt that attacks of bandits and perhaps on the ship you could have to battle some form of sea demon. That might have been extremely entertaining.
The portal thing may it is like time stops for you and you are here then boom, you are there.
Edit: However the vortex thing would have looked cooler.

Yeah, the first 500 times. Then it'd become the same as everything else in the game, and people would still only do what gave the most rewards.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
This is true. However it could be made that it is a little bit different for each difficulty level. Instead of the same monsters exactly that are just a different level they could have a slight variation on like the seamonster or something that made it worth killing.

What'd be sweet is if in each difficulty level you actually got entirely different monster sets (more advanced creatures than their predecessors). For exmaple, instead of just re-colouring a previous monster and adding new stats (like D2), we actually got a similar, yet different-looking AND harder to beat monster.
thats what i hinted at in the "master list". in Hellfire in the new crypt area you got Fallen one Brutes, which were hulking, larger more powerful versions of fallen ones, the were roughly the same height as your character, as opposed to the regular fallen one, which barely pass your waist.

The obvious sacrifice they will have to make is to lessen the variety of monsters that each act possesses. Whereas before normal had all monsters, it would with this new system only have 1/3 of all monsters put into the game. So it's a double-edged sword just as everything else; things take time to develop, and priorities have to be set.

I don't like the idea much.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

i agree that act sucked.
