U guys want a name? How about night stalker ? or shadow rogue or "nightwing clan" or something.
or simple plain "assassin". Anything is better than "demon hunter".
I personally would not prefer any of those names. I mean come on, "night stalker", it's just very corny. Shadow Rogue, let me guess, an archer that uses shadow/dark magic. "Nightwing Clan".... :wallbash:
wait wait guys, I know what class the expansion will have. Undead hunter. LOL!!!
..... :wallbash:
------------------------------------------
I know it's based on opinion, so we are just going in circles, but I just fail to see how "demon hunter" is that bad of a name. Her sole purpose is to kill demons and get revenge, as stated before she is not doing it to save the world; she is only doing it to strike fear into the hearts of demons. The fact that she does not come from some archetype that is born to be a warrior is the reason she does not have a name like "amazon" or "necromancer". That is why I like it so much, she is unique.
Also, your idea of the demon hunter being from a named clan is something we could see in the future.
So? They reused the Barbarian, which happens to be the same Barbarian from D2. Witch Doctor and Demon Hunter comes from Warcraft. Monk is from Diablo: Hellfire. I don't see what is wrong with reusing good names or concepts.
Witch Doctor is a general voodoo term. It describes the class, and really theres not many other voodoo sounding words you can use to describe a voodoo spellcaster, and Warcraft has voodoo elements when it comes to trolls, so they already used Witch Doctor there, but honestly, try to think of a voodoo spellcaster name other than that.
And the Rogue was pretty much your standard bow class. Nothing special. Its pretty easy to move away from, and just make a different take on the bow class thats worthy of a rename, like with the Demon Hunter. Once again, Demon Hunter = Bounty Hunter. She uses many more traps and gadgets than a rogue. I'm not saying Rogue wouldn't be a good name, but theres not much of a reason to bring it back. I really don't see the problem with Demon Hunter in Diablo. Its not like Rogue is a much better name. Both are pretty bland, but once again Demon Hunter just better describes the twist they put on the ranged class. Besides, the Rogue already had a somewhat significant return with the whole town in D2. It doesn't leave much room for inventing a cool background.
Yeah I have never liked that either. Barb, Wiz, Sorc, Necro, Pala, etc - these are good abbreviations. DK, DH, WD - are all bad abbreviations. They are worse in just about every way, imo. For example, you can read Barb or Necro and instantly know what the full word is. But can you read DK and know what that stands for? A lot of people would say Death Knight, I would say Donkey Kong. It doesn't capture the spirit and meaning of the name.
I know, but Barb, Wiz, Monk, DH, WD isn't such a bad lineup. I never liked Pala anyways, but I would agree about two word names when it comes to abbreviations. At least WD and DH aren't already connected to something as big as Donkey Kong. Besides, people will probably come up with other ways of talking about classes (think bowazon) so that could cut down on using solely DH and WD.
How do you know that? We don't know what lore Blizzard would create for a Rogue It could share almost every aspect: She could still have been trained in the Dreadlands to hunt demons, she could be driven by revenge, she could be really dark. She just wouldn't use shadow magic (and dual crossbows ^^).
Well like I said the Rogue already has a backstory. Its not like they could disregard the stuff in Act 1 of D2 like they did with the Monk's backstory in Hellfire, as that was already not cannon iirc. When they had the Barbarian return, they still stuck to his old backstory, and the Rogue already has one from D1 and 2.

And why is that bad ? The Rogue backstory from D1 and D2 are a billion times better then this demon hunter bullshit. A character class shoulder never be tied to stuff like reveange or any other kind of feeling. The character class is what the character do. And what a person do and the ability each person have is mainly determined by how this person manage to survive in the world.
If DH background was: She kill demons because some aristocrats or nubles pay her to do so, i would agree. But a order completly dedicated to reveange is just childish and cheesy. Self perfection, enrichement or survival are good reason to put yourself in danger or dedicate your life. Revenge is superficial and pointless. Only fools would do that.
Before the DH all classes didnot only have a set of skills. Each class have a clear social position in the world of sanctuary. But the DH not. At least not a clear one. The way the lore was written and the way the character was presented looks like she would earn 0 money and just starve.
The rogue would be a much better class. The background builded on the two first games adds alot more to the character then "pissed bitch looking for reveange". I can't believe how cheesy the DH is and how people like this kind of stuff. I guess i have an completlty different taste.

I think the demon hunter lore is pretty cool. I think the fact that all demon hunters have the possibility to have a diffrent background is cool. As for revenge, I also like that part of the lore. I mean if you think about it, it is also part survival "kill or be killed" or as she says "hunted or the hunter". It is also just because she hates demons, which is nice because I mean, who doesn't.
Before the DH all classes didnot only have a set of skills. Each class have a clear social position in the world of sanctuary. But the DH not. At least not a clear one. The way the lore was written and the way the character was presented looks like she would earn 0 money and just starve.
The wizard has a lot of emotions that come packaged with it.
Also, due to the DH's lore, the character has potential to come from ANY social position...I'm not sure if that is your point though. All the characters make their money off of selling the stuff they get from demons, and she kills a'plenty.
The rogue would be a much better class. The background builded on the two first games adds alot more to the character then "pissed bitch looking for reveange". I can't believe how cheesy the DH is and how people like this kind of stuff. I guess i have an completlty different taste.
I like to make up my own background, it just gets me into the character...so I prefer the DH lore vs Rogue lore. If you want, why not just say your DH was training to be a rogue before the town was destroyed?
It really is all based on opinion though, like you said, we just have different tastes and there is nothing wrong with that.
Don't worry Ophion, I read your post too. I think that idea could work as long as it leaves the background open. I am not opposed to the name "rogue" besides the fact that is has already been used. I just don't have a problem with Demon Hunter either.
Why do you have to change the name to alter the concept? All Rogues aren't the same: they are not all women, they are not all restricted to bows, and they do not all live in the Rogue Encampment under Kashya's leadership.
I'm not saying that you have to change the name to change the class, but using the Rogue would be kind of repetitive (character in D1, encampment in D2, character in D3), and I'm saying they changed enough to use a new name if they wanted to, and they did. Even though "Rogue" is vague enough to say "this rogue is from a different group," I don't see the point of using the same name if you don't have to.
A heavy knight can hunt demons, so can an archer, or a stealthy assassin, or something similar to a Paladin. It doesn't give you an idea of how that class actually feels like to play. Rogue on the other hand clearly indicates something lighter, something with a more delicate approach. Look at the other classes. A Barbarian - savage uncivilized beast, Wizard - spellcaster, Witch Doctor - deals with spirits and shamanistic magic. The Monk requires a bit more thought, but it shouldn't take long to realize that it means the Asian martial-arts type. You immediately know how these classes will be like to play, but Demon Hunter actually doesn't describe that at all.
Agreed, "Demon Hunter" does leave open more options than the other class names, but it still fits the D3 Demon Hunter. Rogue also leaves open a more melee based character, like something closer to the assassin, so really either name doesn't quite tell you what the class is, but both of them fit the model.
Shaman ^^ It is not a coincidence that WoW is using all the good ones. I'd rather have them re-use that name instead of coming up with something worse like Witch Doctor.
Ok yea so you found the one other name it could be haha. I prefer Witch Doctor just because shaman is already a class in WoW and sounds more like a support based class, but really those are the two options.
What? Its not like shes seeking revenge for some abstract reason. Her entire village was brutally killed by demons and she's the sole survivor, or one of very few survivors. If that doesn't drive someone to seeking revenge I don't know what does. Self perfection is a good reason to put yourself in danger? Compared to avenging your family and village? Don't think so.
i think they should change all the names; they are all so non-otherworldly.
they all describe the class history according to what we know of in this world. it should be cleverly recognisable as that class name with a made up word involving a twist on the original interpretation of the sounds of the class.
demon hunter = Daemon Venator like.
I definitely disagree. Warhammer Online kind of does that and it ends up with names like Squig Herder. Like it works since there are so many classes but when theres only 5 you can use names that define the class.

But ALL the classes hunt demons lol. They ALL kill demons, they are ALL powerful and in the end they will all be killing the same boss. "Demon hunter" just doesn't fit because... they ALL hunt demons. You could rename this class to something else and keep its lore and sub-story intact. I mean how exactly does changing this classes name effect that in any way whatsoever? It doesn't. Unless you can explain to me how it does?
"demon hunter" meh it just doesn't work for diablo in my opinion because all the classes will be killing demons equally.
Imho... expansion will have a "undead hunter", you saw it here first. If the team for diablo isn't going to get any more creative or original with naming this class than "demon hunter" then "undead hunter" wouldn't surprise me at all at this point.

Ok, yes all them hunt demons, kill demons, and will be killing the same boss.
But the thing is, if you were an npc and you heard this person tell you their story of how their family was murdered by demons, and now they hunt demons to have their family rest in peace.
If they just so happened to walk off after telling you. What would you call them?
Demon hunter would be the first thing to come to mind for me.
Obviously they are not social enough to have the group of people together and say "hey, so we all hunt demons. everyones calling us demon hunters, thats really lame. lets change it."
from a nobody cares about npc. demon hunter seems like the best fit.

That's what I'm saying, it's not like they named themselves that...it's the people that came up with that(at least in my mind). If I were describing someone who's sole purpose was to kill every demon possible, demon hunter is one of the first things that pop into my head.
To the argument that they all kill demons, yeah sure but she kills them in a hunters fashion (typically ranged). Not to mention killing demons is her main goal, unlike our other heros.
It seems like their is a lot of hate revolving around her "revenge quest"...I don't get how this is stupid. If I were in a world filled with demons and they came and killed my family and I had the chance to learn how to kick their ass vs standing around doing nothing...well the decision is easy for me.

They all kill demons, but the Demon Hunter is called that because that's how she defines herself. The Barbarian defined himself as one of the protectors of the Worldstone and Mt. Arreat until they were destroyed. The Wizard is trying to gain fame and fortune for herself. The Witch Doctor is involved because of his religion, as with the Monk. But the Demon Hunter is killing demons simply for the pleasure it brings her, and defines herself by the hunting and killing process. She is willing to try anything to get better at killing demons. It is her sole purpose, and so she's a Demon Hunter. And they aren't going to change the name after the reveal. This is one of many iterations of the class and its the one they like the most.
But the thing is, if you were an npc and you heard this person tell you their story of how their family was murdered by demons, and now they hunt demons to have their family rest in peace.

Van Helsing, depending on if they wore a wide-brimmed hat and all that leather...
Ummmmm yeh I couldn't care less really, though I do like the idea of her being paid by nobles (Italofoca's idea), that just makes her so much... cooler, and cold.
Problem is now that they've released the class that means they're pretty happy with it and bets are they won't change it.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."
Rogue? Pretty much the same thing without the darkness theme.
I don't know, to me, the demon hunter is more than a rogue, or a mere ranger. She is fueled by this hatred to make these demons feel how the people of Sanctuary feel, how she felt. She wants to turn them into the prey, rather than the predator; She is the lion, the hunter, and they are the helpess frightened antelope.
Also, since DHs have no set background, this opens the door to endless possibilites. Your DH could have been training to be a rogue when her town was over taken by demons, she escaped the attacks and was discovered by a "demon hunter" and set her eyes on the quest for revenge.
Well if its revenge against past atrocities then why not call it an Avenger? Or hell even play a WoW term like Forsaken, maybe a Zealot?
Fact is when I hear demon hunter i think Illidan and this applies to anyone whose played WoW or WC3 to an extent.
Yep, Demon Hunter is Illidan, and it will always be that way.
I've played WC3/frozen throne and WoW since vanilla. I understand what you mean, but Diablo and Warcraft are two very different things. Maybe pre-demon hunter I would have agreed, but when I hear demon hunter I think Diablo.
Anyways, I think we are just going in circles guys
Doubt that. The WoW Rogue doesn't have an identity, not even a name, it is just an empty class. The D1 Rogue has a tiny story, but again no name and plays a minimal role in the story. Illidan is an actual character, not a class. There is only one Illidan, his story is complex, he has a personality, he has relationships, he is more than a simple shell. Illidan is a character you remember not a class.
How does the WoW Rogue not have an identity? Its one of the most popular classes in WoW, that has to be saying something. And you are right about Illidan, but his biggest appearance is as the end boss of TBC, where its not even made clear he's a Demon Hunter. You'd have to play WC3 to know what.
Besides, you can't really disagree that the name "Demon Hunter" belongs in Diablo. If you don't like the name, you don't like it, but its at least fitting. People were saying the same thing about the Wizard's name when she was announced. Its just a matter of opinion.

The rogue is a PC, it's not a NPC with lore backed up behind him in terms of story and gameplay (abilities and whatnot). And btw demon hunters exited in WoW before Illidan, demon hunters in old Azshara, demon hunters in Black Temple, the Illdari, id say people were well informed that Illidan was in fact a demon hunter without WC3.

Just because its in a quest doesn't mean that many people know about it. Quest text in WoW is pretty similar to quest dialogue in D2, no one really reads it. And I was saying that the Rogue was a PC in D1, but I was also pointing out that it also had a return of sorts in D2.
