Jimi Hendrix of course.
Behind him is probably someone like BB King.
John Mayor is pretty damn good too. Thought I would mention.

Hendrix is my fav because of his crossover with rock and blues.

Ya Stevie was a great one too. I just prefer Hendrix. I don't think that anyone of them is necessarily better, just different.

There are plenty. I doubt most of you will recognize most of them, because you only know the big names through about the media; otherwise, names like "Jimi Hendrix" won't pop up, whereas names like Mohamad Suicmez would.
So, let's kick it off.
Dave Mustaine
Alex Skolnick
Mohamad Suicmez
Marty Friedman
Chris Broderick
Michael Romeo
Trey Azagthoth
Michael Amott
Mille Petrozza
Quorthon
Ihsahn
Jari Maenpaa
Olavi Mikkonen
Whats wrong with the big names? Jimi is my fav because he reflects an altered version of my favorite genre. Plus, I love playing his stuff more than most.
If you want I could name a ton of guitarists that you have probably never heard of either lol.

exactly. i can name guitarists that you guys have never heard of, but they're not my favorites of all time.
Meh, I don't really have a favourite guitarist. As long as he plays melodic I'll like it.
I do feel obliged to say that Brian May is awesome. (Queen, for the uninformed)
I'd have to cast my vote for SRV, but since he's already been mentioned, I've gotta give some props to my hometown hero, Trace Bundy. Amazing finger-style guitarist.
Jalan Crossland also does some pretty sweet finger-style stuff, but mostly plays (still awesome) bluegrass. There are also some pretty amazing flamenco players out there like Paco Peña and Paco de Lucia. Also, I can't believe no one has mentioned Rod y Gab yet!
Friggn hate, cookie cutter responses for great guitarists lol.
How many people actually like a band enough to find out the members names, then remember them over the course of years. Some people latch onto more famous names because those are who they know.
Adding to mine, Efrim Menuck. But really I just love the band Silver Mt. Zion.. if I try to think I can't even visualize in my head his specific playing, all I get is the sound of the band.
