MTV Multiplayer has just posted an interview with Michael Gough regarding his role in Diablo III as Deckard Cain, along with his work in other games.
On how the Sean Connery-esque voice of “Diablo’s” Deckard Cain came about:
Gough: Deckard Cain has a little bit of that Sean Connery thing that he does. I don’t remember exactly how it came about but I believe that the creators, the guys from Blizzard, threw the Sean Connery name out there. He was supposed to sound older and wiser but have a little bit of a kick to him, a little bit ornery but in that kind of sarcastic Sean Connery way. He doesn’t take a lot of BS, if you will. He’s a very fun character. And sometimes he’s kind of dark and doom and gloom, with all the “evil that spreads over this land will never be abated” but then other times when he gets cranky, it’s funny. “No one ever listens!” And I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the Deckard Cain rap, but I just started letting it go, and I have to boast I did make up a good portion of the lyrics. (laughs)
On how much Deckard Cain is in “Diablo III”:
Gough: Well, I did more than (what was shown at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris). I hope there’s more, but I did a pretty fair amount. It was just one or two four-hour sessions but there was a lot. It was definitely more than what you’ve seen in the preview. I’m not sure when it’s release date is targeted for, but yeah it seems like there’s going to be a fair amount of Deckard Cain, which is always a good thing. (laughs)
its pretty cool and all, but what about Paul Eiding? to me he had the best voice in diablo, the tomes wouldnt be as cool if he wasnt the narrator voice.
Yeah it's good stuff, he was also in D2 once for the reading of the tome where you get the countess quest. "...who once bathed in the blood of a hundred virgins..."
Anyway, I recall the devs saying there would be much more tomes and books in D3 compared to D2 so hopefully they get the same voiceovers.

Soooo.... His voice acting session is over already? That pretty much means they got the game laid out to plan... That is, if it's correct.
Good call. I hadn't thought about that.

Ya the other guys voice was really good. but that raps the funniest shit, i played it for my grandma and she hit me with a broom. try playing it fro sumone who knows nothing about the game its funny to seee there reaction.

You sound so naive ^^ of course everything is planned. They make it feel like they only started working on the plot while actually everything is done, even the dialogues. (I'm talking about the plot side... yes I assume they have some work with balancing/creating skills/weapons and stuff)
This looks like a typed up version of Pandemonium's podcast interview. It's got all the same info. Eloel.
LOL.
Hey, it's all good. At least I had the opportunity to talk with him.
I figured someone else would do this after me, and it does have a lot of the same material, except for the different characters and talking about how much he makes and what not.

Oh well...
Yeah, and they didn't get a soundbite of Deckard Cain promoting their site, either.
they probably have act 2 playable by now. Bastards need to hurry up i want to play dis biotch..
That of course if they developed the content by following the story. They could probably do the first act last if they wanted. To put more work on the last. Because seriously, I would prefer seeing a boring act 1 than a bad last act. Anyway, for where they are now. I think every act are simultanetly being developed. Cause there's alot of work in each acts, but a 2d concept artist isn't going to be working on the same stuff than the post FX one at the same time. What a character modeler did 2 months ago is probably being animated and integrated by now. Stuff needs to get done fast so nobody can wait for others to finish stuff to move on to another act or another part of the game.
I was just thinking of this right now and didn't want to start a topic of it but if you guys think it could be a great idea, you could jsut make a topic with it.
So here it is. Since diablofans.com IS the biggest diablo III fan site around, I thought it could be cool, that Blizzard could give the community a chance to participate to the development. Something like:
The creation of a monster : Everyone just post what he think could be great for a monster, how it could look, how it could move, attack, where we could find this mob. And Blizzard could choose to integrate it to the game. 1 mob for the whole community, i am sure that community would just go buy Diablo III to see the monster they put their ideas on walking in the sanctuary. Personaly I think that would be great and I would love to see "my" monster in the game. Not sure if Blizzard would play the game... but could be a very great little game.

Yeah, theoretically they could do any bit any order that they wanted, but I heard in some interview that they prefer to do them all in order so they get like a developing feel and more cohesiveness, and then come back later and change/add/remove things they think need tweaking
But most of their teams are probably working on game mechanics at this point. It sounds like they have the story and what kind of feel most places are supposed to have all sorted out by now. I mean, sure some art teams and stuff, but just from the topics they [blizz employees] tended to steer most interviews towards that I've seen seem to indicate that they were more focussed on getting the tech of the game down pat, while they had more sorted out 99% of their visual/story/etc components quite a while ago (although apparently still need more work on the random story/quest parts)

I think they did something like that a while ago, when Bliz asked on their forums what kinda event/thing/etc people thought there should be in the next patch for D2 I think. Although I can't remember any outcome for that, I'm pretty sure the übers came out a little while after then though ...
But I digress. I love it when game developers get a random little thing (which really, doesn't do anything bad if its a small enough thing) and let the devout/long-term players decide/create it. And if it was a monster, it couldn't do worse than some of the creatures they made lol =D I mean sure, they'd have to balance it and everything but still, there could be some kind of voting system or something to find the community favorite hehe

I agree with you completely.Hope we'll hear his voice in DIII.
I never realized that was the same guy who did Roy Campbell's voice. It's all so clear now. I hope he makes it back, too.
