I want to say there is ankhs in the tombs but I can't remember for sure.
Anyway the cross inside Diablo has NO meaning that's been explained. It's like a multitude of the other symbols. The rune symbols, the symbols on Tal Rasha's tombs (I don't THINK they have meaning). Plenty of the symbols in Diablo. Symbols on shields.
It's just a symbol.
It could be a cross or a sword.
Maybe they wanted to alter the way the book portrayed Imperius, the leap from a "upturned blazing sword" into a "blazing cross" isn't too far. They might of thought it just would appeal to more people.
I really like this thread and the theory brought up in the first post and fleshed out through the entire thread.
However another idea struck me while reading through the thread. Though the symbol on his chest looks like an upturned sword, it surely also resembles a cross; the two being very similar. Could it be possible this is actually the "Archangel Yaerius", whoever he was or may have been? This angel explodes in a burst of light and all we know about Yaerius, is that he taught the Zakarum to devote themselves to the Light. Also, the Paladins in Diablo 2 (which are Zakarum as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong) do have crosses in their symbolism which lead me to believe the cross has some meaning in the Zakarum religion and it might have well come from Yaerius one way or another. This angel having a cross of light on his chest makes me wonder if it might be him.
The problem is we really don't know anything about Yaerius and he hasn't been mentioned a lot. So it's hard to draw any conclusions, so it's just an idea I had to throw into the discussion.
That's possible. Yaerius might want to come and use his followers to take over Sanctuary. And ur mostly right, the Paladin of D2 was part of a group of Zakarum Paladins who broke away during the Zakarum Inquisitions, because they felt the inquisitions were wrong.
great find i totally agre with everything you said
There has to be another angel in the picture seeing as tyrael has done wrong by blowing up the worldstone...

If Darkness Was unstoppable We'd Already Be Dead......
Hell Is unstoppable
Does anyone have any theories on the whole "Cain goes to Tristram to investigate new stirrings of evil" bit? Would be nice if someone knowledgeable in lore could connect what was "left" in tristram that would attract Cain.. Scrolls that may hint to the prime evils main plan maybe, since the destruction of the worldstone was Baals main goal. This post has quotes saying that what happened was not the demise of the prime evils and that it was "illusory", correct me if Im wrong, but that means the prime evils wanted the world stone destroyed, and that they 'took one for the team" in order to accomplish their real goal. Anyway, theories on why, or what made cain return would be interesting to explore.

Sadly there isn't that much known about the Horadrim monastery in Tristram which is without doubt the point of focus of Cain as the only thing left there are apparently books.
We furthermore know that Cain is there to find out more about the upcoming invasion of Hell, but as to why it would begin in Tristram after the crashing of the meteor goes beyond my ken.
The Paladin weapon seller guy in D2 Act4 occasionally kneel down and does the sign of the cross!
There is just one thing I'm alway curious about and can't really find any answer in the lore. Why did the Prime require the soul stones greatly weaken to enter Sanctuary. While their order equivalent aka Tyrael have no such trouble?
Inarius, I can understand, since he's already in Sanctuary when it was created.
I'm thinking Lucion and Lilith are on the same level as the lesser evil, Andariel, Duriel or a Lieutenant Izual...that might explain their ability to manifest themselves in Sanctuary.
But the Prime have trouble, but Tyrael doesn't...that just doesn't seem to make sense.
What ever that comet is carrying is not good. It is a bad omen as stated. So it could be a corrupt angel, with a message, or it could be a dead angel. Who knows.

Yeah, I agree with Daemaro. If it *is* Tyrael, he's never done anything evil- he might just get jacked up by the rest of the Angiris Council for interfering with the affairs of humans and thrown out. And I'm willing to bet he faces off with Imperius when he tries to get back in to Heaven, and that's what the concept art is.

Pretty much yep.
Imperius and Tyrael aren't exactly the best of friends as it is. Now that Tyrael has crossed the line and went against the rest of the council's wishes, they probably allowed Imperius to be the one to kick him out of Heaven.
Well, technically, by not following the order of the Council, Tyrael become an agent of Chaos in their midst (though he's a bad guy). The council would difinitely throw him out for that...they did it to Inarius.

Kind of yeah. I assume that's somewhat how it's going to go.
Although his intentions were good he didn't follow orders or their laws.
He isn't an agent of Chaos because the Burning Hells didn't tell him to do anything; he did everything- helping humankind- of his own volition. He would just be the equivalent of a Nephalem in Sanctuary or something. Imperius just wants any reason to kick Tyrael out because Tyrael and him represent two opposite sides of the spectrum- Imperius: isolationism of Sanctuary, Tyrael: direct intervention to stop the Burning Hells from making a further foot hold in the door to Heaven.
I agree he's definitely seen as an outcast, but not an enemy. He didn't try to destroy or take-over Heaven or anything, he just went against rules to help humans. That's a lot different than, say, Izual's actions.

But he's not going in to the Burning Hells to work for them. That's why I say outcast- he's for neither side.
I think the council may consider him a agent of chaos because he potentially is creating chaos when he destroyed the worldstone and went against their rules.
I don't think he'll end up working for the burning hells though.

True, but it always has a meaning attached, where as in the Diablo world it has none.
I believe the cross was a symbol for the sun in the past.

THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK!
Or a good angel delivering a sad message.
Or no angel and a badass demon ;-)
Or the comet itself is a bad omen from the point of view of Cain, and it has nothing in it.
I doubt it's a demon coming from the Heavens.
Pretty much yep.

Chaos is the opposite of following laws.
You can be Chaotic good, like robin hood.
The council is lawful good.
And the burning hell is chaotic evil. hehe.
