Torchlight - Is it worth it?

  • #1
Hey everyone in the torchlight community! I am acctually away on work right now and am looking for something to occupy my time in the evenings on some of those boring nights (I'm away for an extended period :(). So I'm wondering if torchlight is a worthy candidate for this? I love diablo 2 and after going through this forum it seems like it is pretty similar. However, since it is not multiplayer I'm a little worried. I love getting good items and using them, in D2 that was the best thing for me. Since there is no multiplayer I'm guessing I'm going to be forced to find everything myself. Is this super hard?

Also how is the replay value? Will I want to play it all over again once its done? What I mean by that is will I feel an incentive to like it will be a bit different somehow? Will the hours I put into it leveling a character and finding good stuff yield a sense of accomplishment or will it feel pointless because the character is useless after you beat the final boss?

And mainly, is it fun? Does it hold a "torch" to D2?

Torchlight is going to become a free-to-play action MMO sometime this year. The gear is totally fun and totally worth it :cute: If you play it, you will find it is dangerously similar to Diablo I and Diablo II short of its graphics.

I think Torchlight is an horrible choice to fill your time.

I enjoyed one run through it... but other than that, even with mods, I found it to be extremely unsatisfying.

Heck, after it, I just came back to D2 if I want to kill time that way. It brings nothing worth it to the table and does -nothing- better than D2, actually does quite a few things worse, especially ITEMS... if you enjoy getting items in Torchlight, well, sweet, but I just don't see myself liking that part of the game. It just doesn't feel good whatsoever. Its not about finding things or not, its just that the itemization is just horrible and unsatisfying. Its hard to describe.

Hey, thats my opinion on the game, not everyone think like I do. Its still worth playing once, but I just never really played it again. Lets just say it didn't hold me until D3 at all.

When it does become a MMO do you know if your characters you make now transfer over? If it is really close to D1 and D2 maybe I will give it a go! Even if it is only for one run through I'm guessing that will be worth the $20, I mean its not that much!

It is worth the 20$ although you probably won't get as much out of it as you hope. The characters will not transfer over to the mmo. There is no release date yet.

I am a little bit disappointed with Torchlight. The game totally misses the atmosphere the Diablo games and Titan Quest had and is therefore really just a hack & slash, nothing more. I got bored after I finished the first quest of the main storyline... Maybe it will get better after that.

It does have a couple of interface improvements over Diablo and Titan Quest. Easy gold pickup, for instance. It is however troublesome to pick the right item out of a pile of items (bosses drop piles), because the nameboxes overlap each other. Terrible.

When its <10 bucks (when the game is for sale), you may buy it. I have heard a lot of people who did enjoy it. When it's >10 bucks, then don't buy it, don't risk the chance of being disappointed.

I downloaded the demo yesterday and tried it out. It was ok like you said but was no where near diablo. Seems to me like it's diablo rated PG. I'm still up in the air about it. I AM a bit curious about the story line already

Yes, it is pretty much that. However, it has it's own unique qualities about it. All in all considering the price it's worth it and you will certainly get your money back in gameplay if you choose to finish the story.

To be honest torchlight is actually a fun game. Graphics are pretty good other then being said "kiddish" looking. Weapons and armours have distinctive looks and they all look different in each of the 3 classes you play. The only thing is the bad storyline. You basically have like 10stages to complete one after another, defeat the final boss and thats it. I completed the game at level 50 and all i could do was to try a different class and complete the game over and over again. :|

quite a good sneak peek on d3 actually, the alchemist's skills are close to d3's wiz, you should give it a try, very tiring though, but interesting enough for me

I've played through it a couple of times; I think it is well worth the $20 price tag. If it were selling for a full 40-50, then I'd say not to buy it. Go into the game expecting to play a cartoon based hack-n-slash and you'll get exactly what you paid for.

It is a little unbalanced (If you play the game on hard or very hard you'll notice 2-3 monster spells kill you in 1-2 hits while everything else barely scratches you) but this makes it quite challenging. The final boss has a pretty epic feeling to it, but the storyline surely was thrown together in 20 mins.

I downloaded the demo and i was pretty dissapionted with it.The graphics alone made me not want to play it. looks way to much like wow. Granted i only played it for abuot 10 mins and it might of gotten better. Not even close to what i expected.

After pumping about 10 Mods into it, i found the game to be alot more bearable in terms of gameplay.

    No. No it isn't.

I bought it on Steam for 14.99 then the next week it was 6.99. I was not amused.

    dude i hate that crap

same thing happened to me with GTA4

bought it for 39.99 or 29.99 cant remember

next day i saw it on sale for 7.99

Yeah I hate being caught out on pricing. Just seems I'm always 1 week too eager to buy something before it drops. :P

Regarding Torchlight though, it's a decent game. I didn't get far past level 10 because the cartoony graphics were too much for me. It was like running around in Aladdin's cave at times, even though there were zombies etc.

It's good for killing time and getting the Diablo-esque feel (it is basically Diablo.. which I was shocked to find out, even the sounds were!). If you're looking for the same gothic, gore, hell/heaven type atmosphere Diablo provides though, don't get it. ;)
