Just what the title says. Every time I get a merc, they end up being 5-10 lvls below me by the end of the difficultly, and so they just get clobbered in Act V, and I end up dropping them because they aren't worth the hassle. With my latest character, I've been working specifically on lvling my stupid merc (A cold Act 3 merc), but he's lvl 29 or so, am I'm 43, so anything that would be about the right lvl for him is worthless for me, and something that would be worthwhile for me still seems bad for his exp.
Anyway, what I'm getting at, is how do you guys keep your mercenaries close enough in terms of level so they don't die easy? When I first hired the guy, he was a lvl 19 and I think I was lvl 20 or so. My best bet seems to be Cow runs. Sure, I don't get a lot of exp, but the cows are fun, and they drop a bunch of loot which sometimes seems to be good, just from the huge amount of stuff falling (and since I'm a poor character, any loot is good).
Rehire after a certain amount of time. Take your stuff off, and rebuy a new merc. There's no real customization other than weapons on mercs, so that's your best bet.

Blizzard has the game set so that if you get a mercenary at a low level, they will be stronger than a freshly hired mercenary of the same level.
For example, You picked up a level 19 Act 3 Cold Mercenary. He is level 29 now. Well, if you were to rehire a mercenary his same level and everything, the one you had since level 19 would have better stats and resists and would be better over all.
If he is level 29 or so, then take him and do chaos runs. Let him kill everything, you kill off anything that attacks you that's it. Once he gets to 35 or so, then start killing things in act 5. Remember that he cannot reach your same level. If he hits 42 and you're still 43, he will not level anymore.

That's why I want to keep him. And I like the merc (when it seems most people dislike the act 3 mercs) because his cold can freeze monsters (sometimes multiple monsters) in place, allowing my fissure or volcano to do damage.
Are chaos runs just a fancy way of saying going up to diablo, but not killing diablo?

act2 defensive merc, comes with hf.
also, act2 mercs are best tanks and provide the best dps, and can also equip polearm runewords with auras like insight, which is great for pvm cuz medi.
also the stats/life gained from self lvling is negligible, but that doesnt really matter if u really want to lvl the merc.

The key thing I always do is resurrect them immediately after they die (unless I'm fighting an act boss who will obviously just rape them again), or course that's not much help if you hire them at a lower level. But it's something to remember once you get him up to your level.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
For me, it's basically always worked out that he's within 1-2 levels of me as long as I make sure he's with me in every dungeon and every quest. Not sure why it wouldn't work out for you. Cows are a good idea if you need him to level, though. Let him kill them to get the most XP, I think.

but a3 mercs suck so its best to lvl yourself and then hire a high lvl merc.

Chaos Runs are from River of Flame WP up to and including Diablo himself.
