Well, the news hit the frontpage, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's shocked, surprised, and extremely saddened by it. I can sort of understand aspects of it - traffic has gone down, and from a mod view I can say that I have to remove more spam posts each day than I can enjoy reading new posts. Nevertheless, I thought this could've been a nice place to hang out even if the franchise is going downhill (is it though?). But well. Ain't gonna happen.
But instead of endless complaining about things we can't change, why don't we all revisit our past, share our memorable DFans moments, and take a look into the future? Look at your post history to go down the memory lane. So, I'll start:
=================================================
I joined Diablofans about six and a half years ago because I had a stupid question about making an Inferno tank barb to support my two DH friends. That kind of didn't go anywhere, so I switched to my other main char (Archon wizard) which should soon become my passion. To share some of the insights I gained from reading up and theorycrafting some of the wizard stuff, I wrote a guide which maybe some of you remember (RoS edition as the old one was from the old forum software and looks ugly, but the first one was written over Christmas 2012). I continued to make a few guides (see thread history, some I didn't even remember like an 1-70 leveling guide, lol) and also my small website (http://d3resource.com/), I think the reason for making D3Resource was that I needed a domain to host my CHD vs CHC calc.
I don't remember when I became mod, because that really didn't matter; what I do remember is the lot of awesome people that I met on Diablofans, ingame, or on both channels. Some of those have sadly long gone, like Jaetch and Loroese - the two best wizard theorycrafters Diablo had (pre-RoS). I also have to mention overneathe, who introduced me to the DFans mod world (without him I wouldn't be here), and his successor Zero(pS). We didn't just play DIablo - do you guys remember the Terraria times? That was fun! There are so many more names I can and probably should list, but many of them were unfortunately purged in the recent transition phase when Fandom took over, and many don't check this forum anymore. But if you do please say high in here!!!
Unfortunately over the years the forum became more and more inactive, and I prefer old-school forums much, much more than Reddit (I just can't deal with the strange thread style, makes it impossible to read "all new posts") and even worse all the video-based info (I'd rather read a long, well-written guide than watch a 10 minute video on Youtube). But I guess that makes me a dinosaur, I dying breed, one that doesn't like to play games on phones ;-)
So, what's up next? I will maintain D3Resource, at least for now. I might lag behind with some updates, honestly, but the best way to contact me is shoot me a Reddit message. I think I'm still behind on the S16 season overview but honestly... not in the mood right now, given recent events. Also, work. If I ever were to abandon D3Resource, I would probably zip all the source code and throw it to someone, so no worries, it won't magically disappear. But it's a static website and I host a lot of old stuff (like a forum that has a much older community, founded in 1997, with less than 10 posts over the last 10 years ;-)). No worries.
I'm not sure about my personal future in Diablo. To be honest, as I expressed here, my view on Blizzard/Diablo shifted. I literally played 8-10 hours for the last 4 seasons each (went online, got a power level, rushed to get Guardian done as fast as possible, delete). S16 took me a bit more than 7 hours to finish Guardian. I'm not sure it's gonna be more given that D3 feels a bit stale to me and PoE looks so much more exciting. I just recently started (~2 months ago) but If someone has a place for a noob (I just played up 3 builds and tried to learn as much as possible, but only tried Shaper once and no kill yet) let me know, I'm sort of looking for a guild, preferably with Discord (and potentially forum, haha, you know me). What a cheap plug, but well, gotta seize the opportunity! I'm also occasionally playing SC2 co-op which I really enjoy (and watching WCS). Once Dfans is gone, I'll continue posting on Reddit, I'm regularly in the chat channel of svr's Discord (where we discuss D3, PoE, and SC2),and maybe we meet elsewhere. See my battle tag in my forum profile (bagstone#2613) or PoE (bagstone).
Thanks everyone for making this a nice home for so many years! <3
I put most thoughts in the reddit post already https://old.reddit.com/r/Diablo/comments/at5gle/diablofans_says_farewell/egzfcvg/ but the amount of memories of this site will live on forever. I really do look forward for what comes next in the world of Diablo.. I'd lie if I said I wasnt looking forward to Diablo Immortal honestly ..
Well that sucks monkey balls, Im not interested in Reddit or you tube vids that take 10 mins to present a 30 second point. Personally i dont see how any other resources trump DFans and the Planner.
Still thanks for being here for the last few years, youve done a great service for us all. I do feel youre going to be missed a lot more when youre gone but with the current climate of Blizz-bashing actually being quite justified , that make take a while.
I forget how I found this site. According to my account that was 7 and a half years ago. Man, I checked this site multiple times a day, for YEARRRRSSSS. Getting drip-fed information was excruciating. I won a closed beta key from here, and I remember being absolutely stoked. I remember getting into some heated arguments as well haha. Hell, I defended stuff like the RMAH for awhile even.
I've said my thoughts on D3 awhile back, so no need to re-hash them here. Suffice it to say, my views on Blizzard as a whole have done a 180. It IS very sad to watch your favorite hobby, your favorite pastime wither. And I'm definitely surprised to see Diablofans going away.
I pretty much stopped frequenting this site about two years ago, when I picked up PoE. But it always held a spot in my chrome bar, and once every couple of months it felt like, I'd check in, only to see the latest threads have their last reply be days old.
Sad to see you go Dfans, you will be missed. (Bleu42 on poe / steam).
gosh, this is so sad... thanks to all the people who made the stay here worthwhile. Now that you mention it, the videos jaetch created were so damn awesome!
well, theres nothing more to say than that I will sorely miss dfans from my heart. Ive read news and such things on here since its upcoming, whats it like, 6 or 7 years, dang.
even in the last years, the first of my daily visited news sites was dfans, just for the sake of not being able to stand to have missed some big time news
on a little side note, im not sure if anyone will remember, in a time where monster power levels were the endgame, there was a user in this forum, something with ...angel, i really dont remember anymore, who was dead serious with his bonkers offtopic posts about him being the incarnation of god and the leader of the surpreme archdemons and such things. I really had a few of the greatest laughs i ever had about memey things or crazy internet trash talk. even thinking of it now makes me jiggle

Hey... I know y’all are bored of the game by now.... and probably don’t give a rats ass about me... but I remember when d1 came out.. I was probably about 9 years old and my brother would play it on our ancient computer in the basement... I was the brat little sister so daddy made him teach me to play and I fell in love... fast forward to today, I’m not a big gamer, but when my boyfriend got a PlayStation I went with him to game stop, saw d3, had to have it. I have questions galore. So help me out before you kick the damn bucket!!!!
This is all very bittersweet. Gathering of some of the older folk around the closure of the site.
Hey btw!
I can see I pinned your original guide Bag! And remember reading it maybe 30 times over to get any sort of traction on my own Wizard. Where I completely failed, of course. But hell, I also remember starting up here myself. Just an angry 20-something, flaming around the forums until I saw the mod application thread. Suddenly I decided to behave and for some reason Molster gave me a big thumbs up and got me on staff, alongside Dae. I think it was rather quick I started proofreading his news articles (<3) and writing them as a whole shortly after. Waiting to format some new datamined stuff has been some of the most exciting times of my life. Just tremendous passion about both Diablo and DFans. Not sure I've actually replicated it anywhere else since.
I can only look back and be happy that it all happened.
That's really sad news indeed. I have not been playing the game for almost 4 years now, but I still check-in here daily for some diablo related news; just out of nostalgia. And to be ready to get into the game again once the moment is ripe. If that will still come.
I've never been an active poster (with only 45 posts in total), but have been around for almost 11 years to catch up on any diablo related news. The buildup towards the release of Diablo 3 is my biggest memory. The moment the Tristram tune started playing back in June 2008 on the live-stream was an unbelievable moment for a hardcore diablo 2 fan like me. Second biggest memory was the large community project we had on here to figure out the drop rate percentages of elites for 4, 5 and 6-affix rares, as well as legendaries, in the early years of Diablo 3.
A big thanks to everyone who helped to run this site over all these years! You have done a great job!
Well me post history got deleted a month or so back so that's not going to to anything
And, I mainly used the site as a read only platform for which I initally never created an account. (that came a lot later)
As to where it started, obviously D3 (vanilla). Where I started out a Barb, getting that one solid leg a month which was useless.
Later o I turned to a wiz, which I sucked at because I didn't even know elective mode.
Than after some googling, I found DFANS!!! that's when i started running the perma freeze wiz (succesfully).
I could go on for hours, simple conclusion: Dfans, you will be missed!
As i stated in the FP post, something tells me this is not just the end of Dfans, but I have a gut feeling the diablo franchise is dying a slow death and it feels like Blizz is going into freefall as well (without a chute)
i've had this website for a homepage for years now, just so i wouldnt ever miss a diablo news by forgetting to visit this page. refreshing every single minute when data mining was in progress just to be among the first to know what was coming to diablo. yeah these are good memories.
now i'm back to Titan Quest since i cant find myself playing POE, cant even decide what to play in that game so i quit before starting.
Yeah it all reeks of another corporate misconception fiasco. They talk about how there's a waning interest, yet then they decide to shut down the one place that still has dedicated fan traffic? This is nearly as bad as their convention pitch for Immortal, it shows they have zero clue about what kind of following their own franchise has and that they don't even give enough of a damn about the IP to invest in it properly.
If you have a place where fans are pushing out new conversations and class builds for a game that is now SEVEN YEARS OLD, that in and of itself proves there is still viability for it. I hate seeing a place like this close up just because a bunch of executives speed skimmed a financial report and then threw the word down the chain so haphazardly that everyone suddenly thinks the Diablo fanbase is a dying horse.
I'm not surprised by the shutdown since updates on the franchise became sporadic and Diablo 3 stale.... But that doesn't make me feel less sad than i am right now.
I knew this site since Diablo 3 was first announced and damn, i browsed it daily to look for news. Then Diablo 3 1.0 was released and we know how the game was back then: not too good, but we hanged on, discussed how to make the game better and still farming our asses off to trade on the AH, grind Paragon levels for Magic Find (remember that?) or just punish ourselves with some Solo Self Found Hardcore mode (i did it).
Then RoS was released and that was the peak moment for Diablo 3 and Diablo Fans: everyone, myself included, posted their own build, be it janky or not but still viable for Torment 4 to 6; we had Dfans clans in both US and EU; we made parties to farm rifts and we chatted all the time.... Too bad it didn't last as long as i hoped. Greater Rifts arrived and they pidgeonholed us into meta builds and we hoped Season resets would help giving us a breath of fresh air once in a while, but they didn't last either. Obviously after all the scrapped features from expansion n° 2 were implemented in RoS, updates became slow.... to sporadic to basically nill and that made many of the players i met on the site and clan stop playing, myself included.... It's a shame, but Diablo 3 couldn't manage to live on the legacy of Diablo 2....
Well, i'll probably still click on the bookmarked main page of this site after the shutdown for nostalgia, hopefully the archive will stay here.

and by trying to find that, I 10000% forgot I even worked on https://www.diablofans.com/forums/diablofans-forums/archives/diablo-iii-trading-forums/old-trading/54003-diabloauctions-net-information-feedback-please

Ha. Bagstone.
SAME HERE. I think that's why all of that makes it so sad/bittersweet.
I want Jamoose to show up. Because tomorrow he has his... FUCKING 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY! Gogo, Jamoose!
WELL IF YOU REALLY WANNA KNOW I HAD AN ACCOUNT BACK WHEN IT WAS DIABLO3.COM!

Ha. Bagstone.
Im so sad,but thanks for everything.

It's going to suck getting Diablo news from elsewhere. Can't say I understand all this sentimentality though...?
And may the odds be ever in your favour.

Why shutdown this excellent site if people still want to consume from it?
Is there not an option to hand it over to volunteers who are willing to carry on developing it?
