If you listened to the most recent installment of The Diablo Podcast, you heard Azzure expound his theory that the radical changes coming to skill runes will non-item them. His theory is that, at least partially due to the massive inventory spam issue, runestones are being changed to some sort of skill attuning system, where all the effects will still be available, but that the “items you find” sense of runestones will be removed from the game.
The newly-reduced stash size seems one piece of evidence for that, and a new tweet reply from Bashiok seems to hint at the same conclusion:
Skill runes, in terms of items that you find and stick into skills to give them new effects, have been one of the longest-lasting features in Diablo III; so I’m not sure if this hypothetical change is surprising, or overdue, the way every other major system in the game has changed form multiple times during the past few years. That said, it’s a big damn change.
Part of Azzure’s theory was that items will remain part of the runestone system; perhaps as consumables. These aren’t his words, but the theory is that you’d find something like a Level 4 Training Scroll of Obsidian Runestone, and “use” it to grant your character a higher ability in that runestone effect, on a given skill. That keeps item finding in the system, adds back something of the character building/customization system D3′s no-skill points and auto-attributes removed from the game, and helps to solve the problem of inventories full of runes, as well as the awkward issue of what happens to item-style runestones when you respec skills — do they stay in the skill you’re no longer using? Do they pop out into your inventory? Do you have to carry a bunch of spare runestones to stick into skills when you change them around for a new situation?
I’m sure this won’t be exactly how the system is run, but removing skill runes as items does seem a pretty logical step, to solve a variety of issues. Plus this way it won’t be so confusing when Blizzard puts item-socketable runes and runewords back in for the first or second expansion.
What do you guys think? Can you imagine a whole new style of runestones that aren’t items anymore? Got any improvements over Azzure’s concept? Or do you like them as items and think the inventory issue could be easily solved by just adding another inventory tab that only holds skill runes? (Which isn’t totally crazy, as there were inventory tabs for different types of items in a much earlier version of the game.)
Honestly I don't see this happening. It's just too much work to be done this late in development, they're already hard pressed to get this game out by cutting systems completely. No way they'll completely revamp the runesystem, i think. That said. I'm pretty sure item runewords are not coming back. It would cause too much confusion. They've even stated Runes will only be used for skills. So that's out of the question. As for the concept I think it's a terrible Idea. The reason they removed as much shared stash as they did was because there was too much item hoarding, they cut it back so you could item hoarde just not as much, so if you wanna sit and hoarde runes, then they're going to let you do that, whereas if I want to sit and hoarde short sword of the bear, I can sure as hell do that. By the logic in this theory, nothing should be an item anymore and everything should be a scroll to use, because If I want I can just go and hoarde Tyrael's might 500 times, and well I created an over abundance so now blizzard has to make it so tyraels might is just a scroll that will become an item once used and I can never take it off anymore. Level 7 runes won't be a cake walk to find just like Tyraels might won't be, the low level runes are supposed to be dropping like candy they want people to try the skills, it's the point of them. just like they'll probably drop a short sword of the bear or whatever affix you want hundreds of times. Just because there is an over abundance of a shit item doesn't mean they should remove them from being items, In fact they just recently ADDED more useless items to the pool so it makes finding those Blues and yellows rewarding.

Rune sistem would be good to finish Hardcore mode. So i hope that Blizzard add it.
Can definitely see this happening. It wouldn't be a radical change at all, they'd just have to stop the runes from dropping and create some interface regarding runes leveling up and applying them, easy stuff from an implementation, fair easier than, say, completely changing the attribute system, or removing an artisan completely.
Furthermore, to refute the point stated in post above me, they've stated explicitly they are doing some major changes to the runestone/skill systems. So saying 'I doubt they'd made such radical changes so late' is simply wrong, as they've actually said that's exactly what they're doing. Plus the changes to the inventory system make it blatantly obvious, in my opinion, that they do not want people having to feel like they need to hang on to additional unused runestones. The difference between this and any old item, is that runes have the potential to be useful in the future, maybe later you'll want to change your skills up and use that indigo rune, better hang on to it.
That short sword of the bear with 100 less dps than the one you're using, has no purpose, and simply won't ever be useful, and needs to be blown up for some crafting materials. So you're point that, this is a bad change because it implies that all items should be scrolls, is not only a gross exaggeration of the OPs point, but doesn't make sense. The salvaging system encourages you to get rid of those items in favour of a 1 slot, stackable item. The runestone system, as we understand it, encourages you to hold on to every single rune, which as far as we know isn't stackable, and even if it was it's a required use of at least 7*5 = 35 slots, one for each level of rune, for each rune type. Runestones AREN'T white items, worth nothing, they are valuable, and as such, based on blizzard explanations, will take up tons of inventory space, blizz is looking to steer away from this, they didn't add white item explosions, they removed salvaging white items, so you don't even pick them up anymore.
In addition, I actually love this idea, it solves the skill swapping problems, and the inventory space issues. You still get character evolution feeling as you're unlocking the new runestone effects and levels as you find the scrolls.
The one downside is the value of these scrolls will diminish over time, as more and more people acquire the level 7 runestones they need, the value of the scrolls will decrease. Alternatively, you could, say, salvage the scrolls for runedust or something, which is then required to actually apply a rune to a skill, for a fee, by the jewelcrafter or something. This would also put a soft stop to in combat skill changing (changing right before a boss or whatever).
i posted this podcast in a diff thread yesterday, but at thispoint i dont care
even game magazines dont care anymore, my cousin works for a game magazine in the states, she says that nearly all of the gaming mags and online game mags views D3 becoming a joke
her mag has already made its mind up on D3, when it is finally released she told me that her mag will not give it favourable review cos of the sheer delay on it, infact there will be a article on about taking advantage of coustomers next month
so ye dont care
So you're friend is already making an incredibly biased review of a game that isn't out, because she feels screwed over by a company that isn't releasing a game because it hasn't met their standards? Sounds like something I definitely won't be reading. Blizzard doesn't owe your friend, or any of us, anything. THEY are losing a LOT of money by not releasing this game, they are 'punishing' theirselves. Why? because they want to release an amazing game, that's their priority. That's all they care about, not your friend or her biased, totally unfair article.
The people at her mag have already made up their mind.. that's childish and incredibly unprofessional. Sure they can note that it took a long time to release, but to judge the other games characteristics based on something (the extra time) that was used to refine those very characteristic doesn't even make sense. Having the played the beta, the game is amazing, and I for one will love it, and will likely play it for years. Do I care that it's delayed? Yes. Why? Because I *want* to play an amazing game. Will I be a patient and rational adult about it? Yes, when it comes out it'll be well worth it. And if it isn't, it will be because it isn't a good game (an almost laughable notion, having played the beta.. many times), not because they took forever to release it.
Edit: Lol just read post below mine, if I got trolled than I guess it deserves a 7/10 or so... I think he was being serious though. In which case his friend is a liar, because ya any reputable game company would never give any game a purposely bad review just because of delays, it might earn a few sentences in the review, nothing more.

No gaming mag is going to ignore a huge game like Diablo 3 because of delays, your lies are blatantly obvious.

Actually you are wrong. Runestones level 1-2 are exactly like white items. They're useless to a player. As soon as he finds a level 7 runestone or a level 5 even. It's like saying tyraels might and leather cloth of the druid are both worth the same. No. Runestones have ranks and the low ranks are going to drop like candy for a reason they're useless. They barely add anything probably, and just show you what this skill could be if upgraded to rank 7. That's the entire point of the ranks. not so that they all drop like candy and are all useful, only later ones that afaik don't drop like candy, much like leather cloth of the durid will drop like candy yet tyraels might will not. So your argument is pointless because they have ranks and varying drop rates. Now, if you have to "build a rank 7 runestone by combining lesser ones, then that also solves your silly "problem" but gives more leeway to your "solution" because yeah you'd have to hoarde level 1's and 2's but they'd eventually combine to m,ake a bigger more badass rune, so hoarding them would be warranted. Runes rank 1's and 2's as of now afaik are supposed to be like white items in act 2 they drop a shit ton but aren't really needed they're just there for you to use and try out what rune in what skills you want nothing more nothing less.

dont call me a throll, im just stating what game sites and mags are already saying!!!!
Edit: It's troll, not throll. Also, there something wrong with you. You have 322 posts and you are contradicting what you are saying. How are the meganizes saying that, if you said that your cousing stated that? Did you got hacked or something?
Please don't turn this into another "kids can't handle waiting for D3" topic, because that is all that ridiculous whining ever is. Man up and shut up about it. The game is still running so strong and everybody is going to be buying it regardless of your pathetic impatience issues and whatever creation you can come up with to hate on D3.
Now on topic. This change would be welcome, I think. Now, I have to say "scroll of learning rune" is just not something I'd want of course. I think the runes should still drop more or less as is, just that they're put directly in a new screen, and are never part of your inventory.
Its definitively a good change if thats what they're doing. Carrying all those runes around when they serve such a core customization rule was just annoying.
IF this something that we're going to see implemented, and whether or not that's the case is still pure speculation at this point, I would still like to see runes appear as item drops, and with ranks. I'm ok with them becoming something that you learn and can switch out later without actually having to keep them items on hand (similiar to the new glyph system in WoW), but I still think you should have to find them, and replace runes with higher level iterations of themselves. I think that's one of the biggest things that Inferno added to the game, and to take out levelled runes would truly be a tragedy at this point.
That being said, I'm not entirely convinced this is what Jay Wilson was talking about when he mentioned reworking the rune system. To me, I think he meant they were simply balancing (as can be seen by the multiple changes made to the Game Systems on the diablo3.com website) rune effects, and possibly weeding out some of the more lame ones.
dont call me a throll, im just stating what game sites and mags are already saying!!!!
That's nice, evidence?
hahahaha, thats what i love about the internet, people demand you show them EVIDENCE!
well no i will not, go look for youself, go to IGN and look for yourself, dont reply to any of my comments again thankyou

by my calculations, wouldn't you only need a grand total of 30 runes banked for one character? (6 of each type times 5 different types, so theoretically you could do all obsidian, or crimson, etc.) and even then, its pretty easy to cut some of those out, im sure none of us are planning an all alabaster rune setup or something like that. I am going off the assumption that most d3 players are going to want to use the highest rank runes available to them at all times though, so if im horribly mistaken on that for some reason, my bad.
Ya overall I like it, but like I said I'm worried about that fact that if it is a 'scroll of learn level 7 rune' then these scrolls will diminish in value greatly over time, they'd need to make the scrolls themselves useful somehow, other than to learn a rune, even if it's just salvaged as a blue item.
Honestly I don't see this happening. It's just too much work to be done this late in development, they're already hard pressed to get this game out by cutting systems completely. No way they'll completely revamp the runesystem, i think. That said. I'm pretty sure item runewords are not coming back. It would cause too much confusion. I have to agree, I think they will stay drops, just feels cooler. Also, don't some recipes require dust of rune stones? That would give a sink for the low level, high dropping ones.
If hoarding runes is a problem due to inventory space, why aren't gems an issue?
you need low level gems to make high level ones, by combining. It's an item sink that makes you hoarde them until you need them then theyll all go away and just take up one slot, plus you could just make gems stackable. Same with runes really I don't see why they'd have to change them from being an item really.
