I'm on the fence whether or not I like people creating their own names for characters or being ushered into using fantasy names similar to the game's lore.
World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, and a few others have the idea of more fantasy names. Ribbioulous as a player's barbarians name instead of xxxBOBby_LOVES-BAC0nxxx.
Volume of players will affect this, and a bunch of other things.
Essentially, How much control should the player have on their character's name?
I'm thinking a large amount but no swears, no sticky caps, and no bacon.

It sucks to come across another player with a really stupid name. But on the other hand, if not all name combinations are allowed it would also hurt those people who are creative enough to make a strange name work for their character. But one thing I know for sure is that I DON'T want people to be able to use numbers or slashes or stuff like that in their names. But please, let us be able to use the spacebar.
Why can I not be DarthFucker? I vote no restrictions besides a reasonable character limit.
Okay I just made that name up, and I never actually use profanity in my names... except "damn" occasionally. But I definitely do not want to have to choose from a list.

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
They need to use the WoW naming policy, which basically says, only letters are allowed, no profanities, no leetspeek, etc, so you can't have names like "i_r_tehleetzor" or any name that is inappropriate for a fantasy game.
I there should be no limitation on choosing names, because if I want to name my char Big Dick Willy than damit I should be allow to name my char Big Dick Willy.
Herein lies the problem of Censorship. In America, there is no real censorship, save what a lot of the 40 year old white soccer moms try to push in their southern baptist agenda.... but that's neither here nor there...
Should we let "Big Dick Willy" go through, which could be offensive to one or several people, in which Blizzard becomes the target of multiple law suits based on offensive and lewd behavior (because they allowed it, they are at fault, as it's their game and their intellectual property, and more people are apt to do it now rather than back in the day).... or have a censorship script that keeps out copyrighted names, offensive names (sexually, racially, religiously, ect. ect.), and anything else that could have an adverse affect on the player base. Blizzard has gained worldwide recognition, and thus must be more careful on whose dreams they tread on.

We should be able to choose. Most pregenerate names are rather lacking. That being said, I'd rather the pregenerated names to some of the names I have seen on battle.net.
There are how many amazons with variatins of the name "BigBoobs" out there? Is this really the creativity of today's gamer? BigBoobs? If so it is truly a sad sight.
What happened to naming characters epic names, cool names like Boudica (or Boadicea). I'd rather use the name of some great hero like Achilles than IRANOOB.
I find a name like Jorgal (pronounce Yorgal) to be a far superior name to PWNRBARB. Similar for a name like Iolas (pronounce yolas)
3-18 letters, one optional space, one optional apostrophe, and one optional hyphen. Automatic capitalisation. No other punctuation, and no numbers.
Except maybe two spaces. Valnir The Reaper is an awesome name. Otherwise that's not bad.
For Diablo anyway, I think some Elf names night get killed by that, but since Elves aren't in Diablo, that shouldn't be a problem.

I agree, Elfen Lied... I've several names that I've stuck with over the many years of playing pen & paper games, to Final Fantasys, and most other games that I get to RP with a character... It's mildy disconcerting to see:
Lady_Avarice has entered the world.
Magus_of_Old has entered the world.
I P W N U has entered the world.
Magus_of_Old has left the world.
Lady_Avarice has left the world

As a 40 year old white southern baptist who takes pride living through her children's meager sport recognitions, I am offended because I in fact like the name Big Dick Willy.

With terminology and urban culture advancing daily (new words made up or older ones with new meanings) without strict policies on character names offensive or painful names (i.e. tEHb0ob1eZz) will slip through the cracks.
I loathe the idea of a generator or censorship but people cross the line when you give them an inch because they'll take a mile... people abuse the choose your own name system and ruin it.

I deeply apologize for offending you. I meant it as a joke. Having lived in Georgia for 13 years, I take humor in pointing out stereotypes and desensitizing them with humor, especially that of the "Soccer moms" and the "Ghetto boyz".

Sarcasm, truely.
I like how this discussion is developing.
I know the terms of service has something in their that Blizzard will penalize you if you call your characters something offensive, etc. but that doesn't stop anyone really, and then other playesrs have to play rat.

Exactly My point. The only time I digress from using a epic name is if I have to include a guild tag, because the game does not fully support guilds.
This should give you some help in the naming department, should anyone require it.

The server blocks the name Hitler. ANd I believe it also blocks certain titles or names like King and Baron. I think that is because King King Bob looks silly. Not Just because ofthe name bob, but because of the doubling of the word King.

oath of chaos... u sir... are an idiot... no censorship in america? if we fuckin saw what really went on in the war in iraq even 1/10 of what went on... bush would have been assassinated or impeached or both (not necessarily in that order)... i for one would have already killed cheney lulz...
I think it should be real names, or something more Diablo related, but numbers are allowed.. Perhaps if it was ok to have multiples of a name that'd be better. I mean there are ppl with the same name in the real world....

It's quite reasonable.
