I just recently made it to Inferno and have farmed Act 1 for a few nights now. I have never seen a single set item or recipe drop (barring the Whimsyshire staff recipe) since I began playing. As I later came to understand recipes and set items only drop in Inferno but do they more specifically only drop in the later acts? Just curious how rare these things are. I think I am at a native 92% MF currently and 160-ish with 5 stacks of NV. Just wondering how soon I can expect to see one of these drop assuming a moderately kind RNG. Thanks in advance fort any insight.
It's all very rare, but RNG happens. All my set pcs I've found were from act1 along with a couple 4 affix recipes, but the rest has come from act2 and beyond. Other people may tell you the opposite from their experiences.
You won't see patterns with 6 affixes drop until I believe Act 3. The others are very...meh to even try to make. As to sets, someone correct me if I'm remembering incorrectly but I believe those are the same as a legendary. They are just a part of the subset of get that can be dropped if the quality roll is passed for legendary.

Thanks for reminding me, that was my other question... so set drops are really in the same "bucket" as legendary drops - in other words, that first "roll" when an item drops, correct?
Never seen a set item drop, never seen a recipe drop, only have had 3 legendaries drop. A level 18 axe with crap rolls, a level 52 belt with meh rolls and a level 59 2h xbow with crap rolls. This is through getting 2 characters to 60, another to 55 and another to 40. I think the RNG is just unkind to me.
I will admit I may be wrong, but that was the way I understood it.
Item drops, it rolls for item level.
The quality roll is next:
Legendary
6 afiix rare
5 affix rare
4 affix rare
x affix magic
etc
etc
white
grey
If legenary is the quality that is rolled, I believe all legendaries and sets that are in the item level bracket that rolled make up the pool for that drop.
I'm just very surprised that they made sets THIS rare. I mean in D2, I remember finding low lvl sets in a1 normal! And it was soooo cool at the time!! I've got 200+hours, with 2 chars in inferno, and zero sets..... come on RNG! Daddy needs a new pair of green shoes!

And then, when you do find one, it will probably be crap.
RNG can be a blessing or a curse. My BF has like 40,000 elite kills in inferno and he has gotten over a dozen legendaries and four set items, where on the other hand I have been playing long and I'm in now act 3 with around 250,000 elite kills and I have only gotten a level 31 legendary when I was leveling and one set item that I still can't sell and I'm undercutting everyone.
For some it's great and some it's bad (or really bad).
However, I have to remind myself that there is a massive user pool out there farming. The auction houses are already flooded with legendary and set items so evidently someone is finding them, or crafting them for all I know?
Yeah, that's the problem though; buying an item is not fun, finding an awesome item is, well, awesome.
I actually have no problem with the relative scarcity of legendaries, I just want them to be good when they do drop. I'd much prefer extremely rare but awesome to more common but still shit.
I still can't wrap my head around how they bungled legendaries/sets though. I just can't. I can understand most of the other stuff, but not this one. Why wouldn't the rarest items in the game be... somewhat good?
Not that I've found any legendary/set items for it to matter, but a poor man can dream am I right?

Thanks for all the responses and commentary/experiences. Hopefully the legendary item revamp will be superbly done and then if only the RNG would toss a little favor my way then all will be good. Thanks again everyone.
Has Blizzard said what happens to Set and Legendary Crafting Items which you have already learned when then Legendary Patch drops? Just wondering.
Thanks in advance!
Only new drops will have the new changes in 1.0.4. The current set and legendary items will stay worthless.

For the most part I agree sets and legendary's are useless (well at best vastly underwhelming) but it's relative. Case in point I got an Inna's Refuge last night. Don't remember the exact stats but it was something like
+50ish to All Resist
+14% to MF
+7% life
Two Sockets.
By all accounts, a fail item right? Well I popped over to the AH and looked at the other Inna's Refuge. There were about 10 pages of them and most of them were in the 200-500k range. Not many with sockets though so I figured throw a hail mary and list it at 2.5 mil. Sure enough it sold, within a few minutes too. Maybe I undersold but I honestly was expecting to get it back in a few days. So that useless drop netted me an extra 2ish mil. Not too shabby.
All of that being said I would have much preferred to UID the chest and see an amazing piece of gear that is a massive upgrade for me. That's not what happened though so I did the lemons to lemonade thing instead.

Not every item is worthless, but a ton are. Some guy was selling a Natalya's chest this morning with 2 sockets that was amazing.
Sorry that I was not clear enough. I heard that they will not change existing items, but I meant crafting recipies which you already learned. Will they produce the improved items or do you have to get a new recipe?
I honestly do not know the answer to this question, and I'm not sure if they are upgrading the recipes. But if they are and I had to make any assumptions, it would be that the upgraded recipes will automatically change. It would be bad business practice to delete recipes you already own so that you have to go out to buy or hunt for the new recipes again.

100% agree. I was just trying to illustrate the whole one man's trash is another man's treasure principle. I think we are both saying the same thing at this point.

Nat's cloaks all have sockets in them but it's hard to get one with high native dex. The Nat's set is probably the best set in the game but it shouldn't be that way. I hope the buffs really make people excited about putting together a set for their characters.
