I've never played an online only game before, but could you simply pull out your LAN cable to save yourself from death as I believe data will be stored online? This is more specific to hardcore players.
How will the online data storage work? Will the server continually save your progress? I ask this because my internet drops out every now and again, so I don't want to lose my progress. Will the game shut off if your connection fails? I assume this is the case if it's an 'always online' game.
yes, your data is always saved, you wont lose anything.
As for saving yourself, it most likley wont do that. Though you lose your connection, the server will think your still online for a small amount of time until you timeout with the server. Even then, if you do this while out in the world, it may "wait" the normal exit time.. just to be "fair" not sure on that one though, would have to test.
I'm not positive, but chances are much of the character data is going to be stored server side to prevent players from hacking so easily, and don't quote me on any of this but if you're in a tight spot and your internet crashes you're probably going to die. Happened to me all the time on WoW. It didn't actually log you out until either your character had been idle for so many minutes, or you logged back in, either of which leave more than enough time to die if it's anything similar. It could very well be different in d3. That and town portal is a 10 second cast and I wonder if there is a "cast" time to leave a game too? Haven't tuned into that part of the beta.
Quite the contrast from d2 where you could hit escape, chug potions which instant healed, or town portal to victory I'm sure. I never really got into HC though. I think it'd be sick if each player could like place their dead hardcore characters (or characters from a season past) in a trophy room like in a museum setting that their friends and whatnot could browse in 3d fashion, see their gear and banner and whatnot, that'd be appealing to me.

I agree on this idea, it always seemed like a waste with dead HC characters in D2 since all you could do was delete them or keep a cloaked figure.
Would also be cool if it would save a screenshot of your exact death moment and show that in this trophy room.

Death replay, last minute of a hero's life in a small movie theatre off to the side.

I can't remember when this was or if it was, but a while back, many people asked about such an idea over on the Blizzard forums. We were told that they were adding a feature for Hardcore that would allow you to see all your dead Hardcore players. I can't remember much cause it was a long time ago.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.
Yeah, I heard they were going to give us some kind of gallery too.
I just thought it was an interesting possibility for hardcore players, I'm far too scared to play HC, I don't think I could handle losing so much time investment, I most definitely would be tearing the sockets out of the wall if I was about to die.
I'm sure Blizzard have considered this, we'll have to wait and see.
Your character updates the b.net servers whenever you do anything from buying or selling items, moving things in your inventory, killing enemies, reaching checkpoints, and so on. If you lose power or internet sporadically the aforementioned will not be effected but it will likely not save you from death. In this case, your character remains idle for 7-10 seconds before disconnecting from the game. This will eliminate the "chicken" tactics found in D2's hardcore mode.
As well I remember them talking about the hardcore gallery feature, but they also planned to support PvP much more than they are now going to. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a dropped feature.

Actually playing hardcore in D3 will be far safer than D2. The shared stash and artisans are all per account so you only lose the character itself (which frankly doesn't sound like that big a deal since you can be max leveled just going through the game 3 times) and the items actually equipped/in the inventory.
