At first when I noticed the supposed new armor item in the D3 gameplay trailer I thought to myself "How completely useless." I didnt care for the argument that 'shoulder-pads' would add to character customization because they are almost purposeless since most armor that we have used so far in the Diablo series has had shoulder protection. Then I realized that shoulder armor could be thought of as simply a type of garment that only added minimal defense. In this light we could see the return of other shoulder-worn garments/armory such as the cloak and cape from Diablo 1 (adding a ton of possible character customizations that arent as limited). I actually think that this would be an almost pleasing new feature. What do the rest of you think?
Edit: When I originally posted this I should have known that noone would be able to see around the "Those things are HUGE and WOW-ish" argument. Perhaps it was a lack of better judgement but I had hoped that someone would be able to appreciate what this type of item could add to the game in general. So please for those of you who wish to post further, please think about what shoulder armor/garmentry as an item type could add to the game looking as REALISTIC or CARTOONISH as YOU like it. Again this is not a thread meant to argue the current appearance of the Barb's gi-normus shoulder armor.
The armor gets even heavier than this in unreal tournament, looks a little over armored honestly, almost funny. Hes got a nice pair of old school Moon Walkers on to. It's funny that a couple pistol bullets cause the guy to die, but just like Unreal Tournament, the shoulder pads in Diablo 3 are just for the artistic design, without any real purpose. Unless you get a pair of Unique Shoulder Guards with 8 enchantments on them.
I never said anything about how the armor was portayed. I do agree that what has been shown is much too bulky, unrealistic, and cartoonish but that has nothing to do with what I was saying. My point was that , if implented well, an additional type of armor/garment add-on could be a nice and simplistic way of addiing character individuality.
Jordan that armor looks positively great compared to D3, and looks like it could feasibly protect him rather than block his field of vision, destroy his center of balance and hinder his arm movement. The armor shape also makes him more imposing due to a more masculine shape (wide shoulders, triangular torso) instead of giving the silhouette of a hunch backed blob.
As for the topic, that would be pretty cool if it was the case, capes and such would be awesome, and it would be even better it made wearing shoulder pads pretty much optional.
I would agree that the new shoulder pads will be a nice addition. When people talk about the fact that oversized shoulder pads are unrealistic... I would argue that so Is the entire world of diablo. If there is an item that can be used to allow greater individual character models and just generally make your character look badass, im all for it. The issue of a cape, I take he Same standpoint.

Yeah and when I looked closely the diablo3.com site barb picture where he had the shoulders it looked like there would be a lot of empty space below the surface. Perhaps to allow better movement of the arm. Some people said the big shoulders make u clumsy and you can't fight properly. For me it looks like they are big because this way it will leave a lot of room under them for the arm to move.
Anyways it doesn't really matter someone said they are so wowish, well there are small and big shoulders in wow. I bet in d3 too, those are just 1 shoulders of possible hundred or something?

I wholly disagree.
Shoulder pads in WoW were the worst. You could actually tell what tier gear someone was wearing and what bosses they downed by the size of their shoulder pads.
Why not put a necromancer in a Cuirass and look at the GIANT FUCKING SPIKE coming out of his shoulder?
Or similarly "ridiculous" effects on the Barbarian when he wears the Immortal King set?
Get the fuck off you're "it's WOW-LIKE!" high-horses and pay attention to the game you allegedly love so much.
Kthx, D2 started ridiculous shoulders.
And I love them.

Hmph.. lets see hunter shoulders, which had one of the worst designs actually.
I put them in size order:
Tier 1 > tier2.5> tier5 > tier 6 > tier 4 > tier 3 > tier 2
So the first tier was the biggest. Tier 2 and 3 were one of the smallest ones. So pretty mixed up. At least for hunters. I haven't really looked what the other classes looks like .)

All adding more equipment does is give us more and more crap to repair..
Good point... but must you flame?
Yes I believe he must because there is hundreds of uninformed biased hyperbole towards this game.... And we have only seen a few minutes of structured gameplay...
No one listens to anything constructive they just lash back with "zomg it's wowish, zomg its cartoony"...
If they took NOTHING from wow it would be a bad idea... because wow has some great features, however wow didn't invent most of them so it's not really "wowish".
I couldn't care less about the shoulders, they aren't that bad, I quite like the graphics atm, I wouldn't be disappointed if they changed to darker/Gothic.... but I would be equally happy if they didn't change at all. I just want to play Diablo 3 and am thankful they are making one.

"If we're actually making the game worse with no other reason than to be different from WoW, then it's a bad choice." - Jay Wilson (D3 lead designer)
Armor and shoulder pads used to be one in the same item. Is it not obvious that shoulder pads existed in virtually every armor style in Diablo II? They were combined with the regular armor.
There's nothing new about the use of shoulder pads except it has a new slot and adds customization. If all you can do is wine about that, then go shove it. Honestly.WoW is not the only game that employs shoulder pads. Though "big stupid unrealistic" style armor sucks, that really has nothing to do with what is yet to come and to what extent the shoulder pad role will have.
If all the anti-shoulder pad posters would like to join hands and cry about its implementation then by all means, go ahead. I personally find that it adds to the game and you have no idea where they're going to take it style wise.

But also since the announcement there's been so much flaming, duplicate threading, spamming being done on this forum.

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
I dont mind the shoulder pads if they made them smaller and more fitting with the Diablo Universe, and of course they must have some added value. hell i wouldn't mind having knee pads either if they could have magical attributes and have a few unique ones
I'm not sure about you...but I find it MUCH easier to carry weight on my shoulders than in my arms...
Why else would the firemans carry be used to rescue people from a burning building?
Oh yeah, thats right, because its EASIER to carry weight on your shoulders than in your arms...
Arbedark, I don't know what your trying to argue, but no matter what you can't possibly claim that armor on that barbarian would be practical, usable or realistic. It's fine if you like the armor looking like that, but don't even try to argue that it is a plausible "armor" design.
