i found him easy in normal, in nightmare it got tough. You need some boots with movement cause he is pretty fast, if you kite stuff you have to move faster than they do, period.
Like mentioned earlier, kite him around a circle till Tyrael starts tanking then start pounding him with arcane orb/signature spell other than spectral.
I mostly used diamond skin, teleport, hydra, frost nova, and arcane orb/pulse lightening.
I've had him on farm for about 6-7 days now... Pretty much just get about 18% runspeed, and just run around pillars all day with hydra down, and MMseeker when he is off screen.
I have 35kHP 400resist all and 42k dps (with 0% atk speed increase, just a raunchy 33% crit/180%crit dmg)
You may simply need more health, although I'm surprised you are having problems with Izual yet got past Rakanoth fine. Both fights involve a certain amount of largely unavoidable damage (Rakanoth's tele-stab, Izual's charge and frost nova).
Other than that, there's not that much strategy. He's faster than you would expect, so without significant movement speed (boots plus another item), it's going to take more than the standard 30% cold snare to keep him off you.

yes u definetly need some movement speed, but if u get some from boots, maybe some from another item I think ur fine if ur casting blizz with hydra up, he will never reach u if ur around a circle(those wholes), he cant charge through the whole, and u can also avoid his novas.
Rakanoth's tele-stab is avoidable. I know because his attack has one-shot me in every difficulty, every time (I don't want to think how many times I've wiped to him). It's just REALLY fast and intolerant of error.
You know it's funny, I probably died 10-15 times on Izual on normal, but never had an issue with him ever again. In fact I think I killed Diablo easier than I did Izual. I ended up having to change my build to something specifically designed to fight him and I would just run around kiting him around the little circles til he died.
or something similar. My problem would be that I could get him to about 25% health no problem, then I'd get caught in a freezing thing and then either he'd catch up and kill me or I'd be killed by his minions. I just basically changed my tactic from trying to kill him to survival first, doing dps second.
When I fought him on later difficulties I had venom hydra and he was a pushover.

It wasn't the best build but I think I eventually killed him with something like: http://us.battle.net...YXQS!aZb!aZZaZa
