3:19 -- Wilson says the witch doctor is not the evolved version of Diablo II's necromancer.
The Necro has been in almost every Diablo book, and it is one of the most played classes of all. I think instead of the witch doctor being a replacement, I think the Necro will have new skill trees, or whatever they are going to use. I think it would be cool if the Necro had almost assassin like skills for the dagger, as they do in the books. The Necro I think WILL be in Diablo 3, even if completely different. I think he will be awesome.

Blizzard has already stated that the Necro will NOT be in Diablo 3, but will probably be revived in an expansion (most likely with other remade D2 classes).
there are several interviews that mention that the necromancer will not be a playable class in Diablo 3 or in any possible expansion. According to Wilson the necromancer was too perfect. There was no room for improvement and they dont plan to simply transfer any classes. We'll most likely see them as NPCs but thats about it.

You are mistaken...they have specifically stated that the necro and possibly other d2 classes will most likely appear as a playable character in an expansion.

provide me with the interview that said so and i'll believe you.
what exactly was said was: "the necromancer was victim of his own success. He was the perfect class, we couldnt find a way to improve him, so we left him out".
also they said many times that no class will be similar to another. meaning that if there is one summoner/disease/poison sort of guy there's not much of a chance to have another. Witch Doctor is a summoner with many abilities that are quite similar to the necromancer's own.
I have no reason to waste my time hunting down the interview for you, because I've already read it. If you want to read it for yourself, you do the hunting. But I assure you, there is an interview where the lead designer says something like, "the necro will probably appear in an expansion."
^ I've read the same thing but it never said the necro was coming back other classes may possibly comeback but not the necro. He was using it as example.

And here it's the Mtv interview that you were referring to.
Oh, and the first post has a link covering the WWI, old...
Please post something new.
Our approach for classes in ‘Diablo III’ is that we don’t have a strong desire to bring back classes from the previous game,” Wilson told me. “The goal is to try and give people new gameplay and not just re-hash old gameplay. We’re not just making a ‘Diablo II’ with updated 3D graphics.” “The problem was, we looked at the class and didn’t think that we could really make him a lot better,” he explained. “We could add some new stuff to him but for the most part — curses, corpse explosion, skeleton pets — done. That’s the class. We wanted to create new gameplay, so we chose to do the Witch Doctor as a different kind of class.”
theres the part of the difficulty to create something new to make it interesting.

there is some hope but nothing certain yet. In fact we cant be too sure about what the expansion(s) will bring.

“There’s a lot of people on our team who aren’t happy with our class choices,” he admitted. “But after we’ve established ‘Diablo III’ as its own game with its own type of gameplay and experiences, I wouldn’t be opposed to looking at old classes. We are trying to design [the Witch Doctor'] class so that if we did bring back the Necromancer, there’s room for him. We’re looking out ahead of time at what our expansions are going to be, so we’ve got to keep room open for some of those other classes down the road.”
this part could let room for hope, but as in most cases it could be just to ease the whining of the fans. There is already too much of a similarity to these classes to implement the Necromancer. As said in the first of the quotes, the necromancer doesnt have much room to make a reappearance in the sequel.
what they havent said is "how" possible it is. With the information we have so far about the character classes included, the chances arent that many. Thats what i'm trying to point out. We have the one class returning and the other thats very similar to the necro. Because of this similarity the chances of him returning are much much less. We have 5 more classes as candidates for a return in an expansion. They'd have more chances for a return (at least until we see the next class in BlizzCon).
Actly the WD gameplay would be very diferent from necro. Most of necromancers builds have the damage based at summoning. The WD's summons is just a way to avoid direct control for a few seconds and a channel for other effects (like explode your pet for a massive nuke).
I think the Druid is more summoner then the WD.
As already said, necromancers appears alot in diablo's books. Maybe in exp we will have a new necromancer (maybe the old D2's apprendice) with some new and some old tricks.
Well, maybe the WD isn't the necro, but there's no denying the similarities. Haunt and Bone Spirit, Sacrifice and Corpse Explosion, an AE confusion spell, AE slow effects, obsession with the undead, and general creepiness to name a few. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Necromancer, I would be thrilled if he came back in an expansion, but Bliz would have to do some MAJOR re-imagination to make it work. My 2 cents.
Yes I agree, the Witch Doctor will never be what a Necro is; but they do have the same type of role in terms of group play. Not a straight up nuke caster, but a caster with lots of utilities and debuffs. They have the ability to control a lot of area between their minions and disruption spells, which is why I think they will be one of the top arena classes.
I'm sure the Necro, if any class, will be coming back in a later expansion. Seeing as it was a class loved by almost everyone out there, unless they plan on making 2 (or one, I'm not a psychic) brand new classes for a major expansion in the future, I think the Necro will be making a comeback indefinitely. I hope they'll bring back a few classes for Diablo II, but I doubt they will, since they don't want this to be "Diablo 2.5"
WD is a summoner yes, but different from Necro playstyle, philosophy. He is absolutly different idea of the summoner class and but still a summoner as Necro. If you want i'll use metaphora: they live on the same street but in different houses.
I was always a big fan of the Necro in D2. That is what first drew me toward the WD originally. But as has been stated, there are enough disimilarities that I am not sure if the WD is the way I want to go to start. The summons are appealing, and I think the real challenge will be to synergize the spirit spells with the summon spells for control and damage.
I am sure that I will get to all 5 classes eventually, but I don't want to have buyer's regret on the first one.
Edit: Crap, didn't see that this was an old necro'd thread (pun, anyone?). Still interesting topic to me as I have only been reading the forums for a couple weeks.

But congrats on using an old thread rather than a new :). I'm glad someone did today!!!!

Wow...
Anyway, sense it's already been necro'ed, as I've already said, the Witch Doctor is more closely resembling the Druid then the Necro.
