When everyone's tried out healer and dodging monks, what unusual builds do you think people will try? I mean in the vein of melee wizards or throw barbs.
It seems like the monk has less room for weird builds- I'm disappointed they can't use ranged weapons and don't really have any ranged/casting skills. (I guess with their great defense and quick speed, a ranged monk could be untouchable/overpowered.)
Here's one I came up with - a slow-mo monk. All six skills he has slow the enemy.
all low cost spirit spenders and faster attack speed for an unrelenting monk that's always in yo face!
This probably isn't the Monk I'd personally play but it could be fun if you like spamming different moves all the time. Could keep the gameplay fresh and exciting
It's a pvp aoe burst dmg monk. The idea is to start the fight with deadly reach to get the +30% dmg bonus, then suck in the enemy with cyclone strike and immediatly cast wave of light. Exalted soul, golden mystic ally, golden mantra of healing and golden way of the hundred fists should be enough to keep up the spirit. The lack of mobility is made up by the constant healing recieved by the mantra, the one given by cyclone strike and trascendence.
I'm still trying to figure out what I did here.. as its very.. chaotic..
parts of it just don't seem fair unless they change all the runestone attributes again before release..
so.. with Slipstream you can gather all the enemies up and get a boost to dodge
Essence Burn them with a fun spreading dot
then with Northern breeze you can just run around and through enemies doing 170%wd and slowing them by 50%.. for free..
with Reclamation you will be healed 30% of the time you hit each enemy
the rest pumps up dodge so you'd equip+crit gear, all resist so you'd only focus on one type of resist, hp buff from the ally, and a speed increase to hurry the process and get out of danger quicker popping your Ascension if things go bad..
here is my idea of a slow monk total of 159% slow movement + 35% slow attack + 50 > 70% damage buff. http://us.battle.net...YkdR!YXV!YZbaYc
the main cycle is:
1- crippling wave.
2- lashing tail kick.
3- deadly reach.
*you can use Wave of light on higher priority/rare enemies while healing you for 11860.
*use dashing strike when things get messy or to close on ranged enemies +40% movement speed.
*the build lacks any kind of heal except transcendence.
*this is kind of medium ranged monk.
a totally different idea is the build in my signature, http://us.battle.net...TZSg!dcX!bYcYcb
BTW i changed the rune for blinding flash to indigo (i think it is better for this build)
the cycle is:
1-sweeping wind (you can try to build it up to the third stack but you don't have to)
2-blinding flash.
3-dashing strike.
4-tempest rush for 3secs.(while taking half the damage and enemies blinded and miss 30% of there attacks)
5-the echo of blinding flash starts.
* serenity + dashing strike and exit if things get messy.
* serenity + matra of healing twice = BoH heal and you are already imune for 5 sec.
@Dryhten
the golden rune for tempest rush and whirlwind is broken.... i guess.
@Axtroz
i edited your build a little for better damage output and survi(viability) http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk#hekbgR!ZXa!bZbaYZ
1-replaced mantra of retribution with wave of light
2-mantra of evasion with alabaster (divine protection) as your defensive mantra.
3-mantra of healing with indigo for extra shield when healing.
I was looking at creating the 4 mantra Monk a long time ago and that Monk will be quit good. I think I used only spirit generators on the other 2 skill slots. The fists of thunder and I believe one of the other fast hitting one in the build. I just wish I had Beta to test some of these theories out(or limited form of theory). The build works out for me since I plan on playing HC and alone and the Mantras will fit in nicely based on what is needed at the time. I want fast strike skills since if I need to change the mantra than I could do it quickly.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
- First of all, cast your "mystic allie". Throw in a crippling wave whenever possible.
- Pull everything in with "cyclone strike". It activates the "resolve" passive.
- Use "serenity" for a high damage burst. It's effect is improved with increased HP from obsidian "mystic allie".
- Use "mantra of healing" to regain some health and regen.
- While the shield is effective from the mantra indigo rune, use crippling wave.
- Use "inner sanctuary" to beat the crap of anything left alive.
I will definetly try this build out if i see i am stuck not being able to progress at inferno level. It relies upon 30-45 sec cooldowns but it as a great survivability and will definetly reach one of the highest AOE damage burst combination possible.

Even though all this is for naught.. here's another combo just for fun
I'm not sure if it would be as much as you'd think as it's a 3 second window to take damage which you are limiting by having skills that reduce your enemies damages.. and also limited by your max hp, no, we don't know what the max will be yet but I'm sure it won't come close to the max hp a mob can have.. with that in mind I would say Exploding Palm would be the highest at 30% of a mob's max hp +395%wd additional damage to mark.. here's the fun part..
with Mantra of Conviction's "Overawe" +74%dmg for 3 seconds
Exploding Palm's "The Flesh is Weak" +15%dmg for 3 seconds
Breath of Heaven's "Blazing Wrath"+12%dmg for 45 seconds
Crippling Wave's "Breaking Wave" +15%dmg for 5 seconds
and Combination's Strike for +8-16%dmg (Exploding Palm and Crippling Wave) for 3 seconds..
so get a second mob with high max to be near your main target(s) and lower his HP down, and start Blazing Wrath>Breaking Wave>Overawe>The Flesh is Weak your main target, then Exploding Palm your secondary mob to explode.. for a completely theoretical and impractical and soon to be changed with the update.. about 90% of the max hp of the secondary mob as AOE... plus the damage dealt to mark all the goodies on the main target.. http://us.battle.net...XWfe!gda!ZccYca
This build is a heavy upfront dps build. I plan to be using a 2-hander with it. Not sure about a few of the runes, like exploding palms creeping demise I may swap for impending doom. Also not absolutely sure about wave of light, may swap it out for something like tempest rush if it becomes too costly. However, for now or until I get to try it out im very happy with the look of this build. Some nice aoe in it.
How some of you dont have exploding palm in your builds ill never understand. That things gonna be a riot.
This is my build, and I'm hoping that this build can do well for both PVE and PVP.
Instead of going for dodging or healing builds, my build aims to generate spirit quickly, and through use of spirit spender abilities to regenerate health.
I also make use of rune-stones on fist of thunder, seven-sided strikes, and lashing tail kick to get teleport and stun abilities for PVP consideration.
At first this was a joke but now I will probably end up seeing how all these skills work together. Basically its a lot of dashing and teleport monk skills.
4 Mantras
-switch them as often as possible to maximize the bonus for activation of a mantra and of course try to use the ones best suited for every single situation
FYI: The 3 second mantra bonus goes away when you switch to a different mantra.
Dash into a pack of enemies and get the Crippling Wave debuff up. Finish with Deadly Reach once every 7 seconds for the bonus armor and spam Mantra of Evasion every 3 seconds and Breath of Heaven as fast as spirit generation allows (should be able to keep the rune buff up most of the time).
Passives give damage reduction, healing, and more damage reduction.
On packs that aren't as tough, switch to Mantra of Retribution spam for 140% damage returned to speed up the killing.
Based on D2 Hell difficulty , you might want to consider using One With Everything passive. I feel like it will be a must in inferno.
Yeah, but I think that depends more on your specific gear setup. Early on you'll probably just have to take what you can get in terms of resistances which means you're likely to have a bit of everything making that passive less valuable. Later on when you could potentially pick and choose in order to stack a single element it seems like you could also just pick and choose to stack +resist all (in fact, right now you can get a max of +80 resists all on an item vs +60 resist to a single element).
I can see that passive being situationally useful based on specific gear setups, but right now it doesn't seem like it will automatically be a good deal.
I would so change one of the mantra's for serenity or sanctuary just for shit and giggles when they do get to you!
Oh yeah the mantras aren't really critical to making this an eccentric build. Those teleport and dashing skills are what makes it eccentric but I would love fr a build like this to be more than shits n giggles it would be so fast paced.

It would probably take forever to kill anything, but at least you'd be alive (assuming you can hit them)
Not sure about the math (or whether DR even stacks - I don't have beta), but I'll give it my best guess:
100 base monster damage x .6 (crip) x .7 (conviction) x .7 (resolve) x .6 (sanc) = 82.3% damage reduction with Sanc up
Taking Inner Sanc's cooldown into account = 75.3% average
Sounds pretty OP considering this isn't even taking armor into account - I doubt they'd let that slide, but I can dream

Yep, 150 spirit---doesn't increase with level (250 with the passive).
On topic:
