I was just wondering if whirlwind really is useless for difficulties beyond normal. I haven't seen any Hell/Inferno builds with it yet. Is it really that bad of a skill?
It could be used up until Inferno really. I used it until then at least and did pretty well. But inferno... it seems no skills are good enough for that stupid place...
I used it through Nightmare. Starting in Hell I went more defensive and got rid of spenders. I don't see it having a use in Inferno.
Agreed. Having 100 fury for +25% damage constantly seemed a lot better than the terrible damage whirlwind did, even though it looks awesome. Better to save ability slots for other stuff.
I hope WW gets buffed on a patch soon. It's just so much fun to jump into a huge group of enemies and come out of it alive with lots of dead bodies behind you.
I'm in act 4 hell at the moment, and I've been using it since day one.
I alternate between the life gaining rune and the gain fury rune. Mostly I use the fury rune, perma-whirlwind is great for absurdly large trash packs.

gear farm it? idk what you are talking about as its a breeze after you farm some gear.
The issue with Whirlwind is the most efficient builds use revenge spam to stay up / dps along with either frenzy or cleave. I tried it with my 1hander / shield but it seems to suck unless you have a good dps weapon / some leech i guess. I am pretty sure its viable, just plan on dieing alot.
my personal preference since i sword and board is just a tank build with wrath to fight elite packs for solo, in group play i take out wrath for taunt shout. (working on A2 inferno atm) http://eu.battle.net...YkPS!bVe!acZcZc solo http://eu.battle.net...YkgS!bVe!acZcYc grp
both are pretty efficient, my gear is fairly bad and i can kill almost any elite packs as long as you play smart (getting out of desecrates, arcane orbs ect)
That's what i'm using with duel wield: 36k hp, 5k armor, 7k dps, ~300 all resist, 8%lifeleach, 800 life on hit. I've heard the "WW sucks in inferno" argument since day 3 of release and refused to believe it. I've been using it just fine since i stepped foot in inferno and i'm by no means geared for act 1. Generally, if there's around 5+ mobs i'll start WWing when i have the fury and just spam revenge whenever it procs.
For those of you hardcore WW fans. We all know WW doesn't do the most damage but we still use it. Why? because of the mobility of being able to move through the mobs, albeit alittle slow but you can't be blocked unless walled or jailed. Also, a big bonus is the fact your actually in the middle of the pack. Not on the side being hit by only 3-4 mobs. This means revenge is probably proccing every CD. Basically, i WW back and forth in about a 5-8yd area while spamming revenge and mobs die retardedly fast because of the crazy amount of damage revenge does. If i sat on the side using frenzy i'd probably get about 1/4th the procs i do now. For champion packs you have to be alittle more careful though. obviously molten/plague/desecrator/electrified/firechains can be painful if you don't have the resist to handle the dmg. However, i did find in some of those cases that WWing back and forth while moving slowly away from them and spamming revenge works really well. Keeping myself out of the crap on the ground and still hitting them while regenning health with revenge. Instead of just running away i can still do damage while staying mobile. I've tried taking WW off and just using the standard frenzy build. But i found that i can't do without the mobility that WW gives me. Using leap is nice but when it's on CD your screwed. WW just requires some fury.

I actually couldn't ever use it. I tried to find a use for it a few times from normal-hell but always found seismic slam to be far superior. Now in inferno we all know every fury dump is worthless... infact I found them all useless in hell, frenzy with max fury and Berserker Rage always did better damage. Every fury dump is an AoE skill and either works in a small cone or within a small radius and the monsters don't generally pile into you like they do in D2 unless you're a tank in inferno. Pretty much noticed this early on for every class, you don't AoE entire rooms like you did in D2 it feels more like a WoW action RPG clearing small trash packs with long distances without meeting anything new. Meh maybe years of excessive teleporting made D2 feel different to what it actually was *shrug*
I used it pre-Inferno quite a bit, mostly just for fun/nostalgia from D2 and feeling badass, as well as smashing 2000 objects. I think it lacks for Inferno compared to things that could take its place, but I don't think it's entirely useless. I do wish it was better, though.
I expect whirlwind builds will become more viable in Inferno, once you get a 2h +life on hit weapon. A heal every time you whirlwind a mob... which is one of many mobs = many many heals?
Its gonna need some testing, but it may have potential.
Quite possible. Leech in D2 was pretty crazy with WW.
I don't think WW is useless, but everything WW is good for, Merciless Assault is better for, and the latter generates fury instead of spending it.

I grew up gaming without internet forums. The entire phenomenon of being upset with a game developer makes no sense to me. No sense. I cannot imagine spending my time and energy being upset about something I choose to do for recreation.

My Inferno act 1 butcher runs build, I have no crit in my gear btw.
