I'm sure you have all heard about this, but a writer for Gameranx has recently passed away after playing Diablo 3 for three days straight. He suffered a heart attack in his home. PLEASE be careful everyone
Yeah, I read about this over at HackerNews, and this guy was grossly obese and led a completely sedentary lifestyle. *This* is why he died of a heart attack, not because of playing video games. Staying up for three days playing a video game was certainly the catalyst, but it was going to happen sooner rather than later regardless. If he were a reasonably healthy person to begin with he would have been fine.
For some odd reason, I find that funny and I even went to a funeral today (also heart attack, but not Diablo)
I thought I was going to become one of those statistics. After the fourth day of no sleep I began shaking and my skin discoloured oddly, as well as losing feeling in my fingertips.
At that point I knew it was time to sleep and that was harder than facing death for me. I even had to drink sleeping pills because of my insomnia. All that I had on my mind was Diablo.
I'm telling you, at that stage you're so absorbed you don't even realize what you're doing to your body. You see the effect, you feel the effect, but you don't care and/or understand. It's just 'one more level', a bit more gold, NEED TO BE FIRST IN INFERNO, etc, etc, etc. I'm sure there was more than one case.
R.I.P Fellow gamer, I hope it was a happy three days for you.
I mean... I don't usually laugh about death, but... well... LMAO!
Seriously though, the dude should have known better. He was 32 years old. Some days I'll play 12-16 hours, but I get up once an hour, walk around, and quite simply DO OTHER STUFF throughout the day.
He probably had a mini-fridge and a pee bottle beside his desk so he didn't have to leave the chair.
He could of been doing anything and suffered a heart attack. It's funny they mention the game to try and spice things up.

It's almost always sad when someone dies, but honestly, this guy committed suicide. He was grossly overweight and unhealthy, a ticking time bomb. This is no different than a smoker who comes down with lung cancer (I am a smoker myself). Sad? Yes, and also completely avoidable and self-inflicted.
"I got a bit worried since I knew he was playing Diablo 3 since it came out on Tuesday and I've heard of people dying from exhaustion and what not from playing video games so much."
Wow...if you read the 2nd paragraph of the story it basicaly says that it wasnt from playing D3 lol. It says he was out partying until 1am. Learn to read more than just the headlines... Seriously, you only had to read the first 4 sentences to learn this.
Although the death was initially blamed on a three-day-long "Diablo" binge, that may not be the reason. PSXExtreme reported that a friend clarified the situation, saying that Shirley was out with friends until 1 a.m. the previous night.
The guy probably looked like Francis or whatever from the youtube videos.

Really? I haven't.
Most people who have "died from playing video games" have died this way, from playing too much and I guess just having heart attacks?
It's unfortunate that no one does a good job explaining how this could even happen. How do you die from playing video games? People stay up for long periods of time a lot, it doesn't automatically kill them.
I would assume that he was living extremely unhealthily, or there was some other unmentioned issue going on here. But it'd be nice to know what about playing video games for like 3 days straight is enough to kill someone.
For those of us who have done stuff like this, it definitely doesn't feel good, but I've never felt like I was going to die. I would say that in all of these cases there are likely to be other issues going that aren't mentioned... I think it's kind of ridiculous for people to just assume that playing a video game, even for a few days straight, can be a cause of death for someone.

He was grossly obese from what I've heard and was in pretty shoddy health. He was described as having a "sedentary lifestyle". For those whom don't know what that means, he basically sat on his fat ass when he wasn't getting up to piss and shit or drive to work, where he sat on his ass for a living.
It's not the act of gaming that posed a danger to someone so predisposed to heart attack that caused a fatal event. It was likely sleep deprivation, which raises blood pressure and creates a serious litany of problems for people in high risk categories.
An issue that affects PC gamers that doesn't get much air-time because it is often not deadly is something called DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). Essentially, sitting in a computer chair for inordinate amounts of time can cause serious circulatory issues in the legs, causing blood-clots. Which can be deadly.
Especially in overweight people, there is also a risk of lymph node infection from improper circulation.
Just make sure to get up and stretch, walk around and do some legs swings/knee-bends every so often to keep the blood flowing.
Not the story I expected to read when I saw thread title. Man obsession can do some thing to ya. D3 didn't kill him it just happened to be the something he was doing while he was living this extremely unhealthy life style from what the article states. Sad none-the-less.

At least he achieved a world first.

Hope he at least looted his first legendary.
