We have a few different options you can pick from to display item names while they're on the ground.
The default option is that names will show for 10 seconds when the item drops, and then the name fades out. You can hit Alt again to show them for another 10 seconds. (Diablo III default)
You can also forego showing item names automatically when they drop and choose to just use Alt to show item names while it's held down. (classic functionality)
You can also choose to always show item names, and hold Alt to hide them. (I'm not sure how useful this is, but it's there)
There's also an option to make Alt toggle showing item names on/off. (my personal favorite)
We're also looking to bring back the /nopickup option from Diablo II, but it's currently a nice-to-have feature and so may not make initial release.
Additionally you can rebind any and all keys in the game, so you can easily make something like the Tab (for example) key show item names instead of Alt, if you prefer.
In case anyone was wondering, the "/nopickup" feature made it so you couldn't pick up items unless you had alt selected (always a good option). This was to ensure you didn't accidentally fill up your inventory with garbage you didn't want.
I think this is awesome news. I personally think the "always on" option will be best for me. Don't wanna miss any of that phat l00t.
That is neat....I really like the first option where it shows for 10 sec and then you can pick it up. Especially if combined with the 10 second thing so that you don't have to worry about where you click. Very neat idea.
I'm probably going to stick to what I'm used to with the classic option. But, you never know. Maybe with the differences in gameplay in Diablo III I'll eventually discover the other options are more viable *shrug*
At least there will be no more hasty decisions since we only see our own loot. ALT in Diablo II could be tricky simply because you needed to be quick enough to beat the leachers to drops while holding the button and defending yourself. If that is no longer possible, the stress is off. Peruse your drops at your leisure.
it'll be nice if they have something like "shift + left click a item on the ground" and the item goes straight to your salvage cube. so you dont have to pickup everything (thats valuable for salvaging of course) on the ground and then go into inventory to salvage items 1 by 1.
Sounds great. I love how Blizzard keeps improving Diablo from game to game. The ALT option to highlight item drops in D2 was such a huge improvement over D1 (remember searching all over dark floors because you heard a ring drop?), and this sounds even better. I'm ESPECIALLY looking forward to the privatized loot system.
The classic sounds like the best option for me. I don't want the names to be shown for more than 2 seconds at a time, so the default is not an option. The toggle has no point either since I will never be running around with it on. The optimal for me would be if the names are shown for 10 seconds when they drop and then let the rest work like in D2.
Yeah, that would have been my second choice. I like that the name shows for 10 seconds upon drop. It will just be a matter of playing with the options before I'm set on one.
Good, thats very good to know, I am assuming different kinds of options for showing life bars above head, or at the top when rolling over a monster, damage number popups and exp number popups when fighting enemies will all be optional as well ^____^
oh and outline around monster on roll over, on or off etc
I like the 10 sec option. I think that's pretty neat. You can just grab something real quick while fighting and not have to wait for everything to die to hit alt and see the items that dropped. The only thing that would be bad with it is if it appears over the monsters around you. Say you're fighting 5 at once and one dies but the item name is over the one you're currently fighting and you're inventory is full. Then the grey chest piece just flips up and down in the air over and over while you try to click an enemy to fight them, but instead you keep clicking the item. Ophion suggested earlier maybe a 2 sec limit and I agree that would be neater because it takes you a tenth of a second to read what it is and whether or not you want to pick it up. I will for sure use it when I'm max level and farming for stuff though so I'm glad it is an option.
I will likely go for the 10 second and see how I like it. If that doesn't do it for me I will just use the toggle feature since it I can just look at stuff after a fight.
Oh that is sexxxxy! The Toggle feature looks to be one I would love. After a fat room clearing just pop it on and then back off when I'm ready for the next area.
The default seems pretty nice, though I think I might miss some items while I'm in combat. Say a huge horde comes along, chances are that encounter will last longer than 10 seconds. The Hammer of Thor falls as I'm shredding face and I don't notice in the firework show which is my awesomeness ( ). Will I remember to press Alt after the battle is over; maybe, maybe not. I think I'll end up playing it safe with item names always on.

This is just speculation, but I think there are two things that are going to deter this situation from happening:
I believe the item drop rate that you see will be significantly less than it was in d2, yielding less clutter.
Also, if you watch some of the videos, you'll notice the items actually glow the color of their quality (I think).
The 10 secs. option is what's I'm going for. It's enough for me to see what I need and if I did miss a few items I'll just press alt again for another 10 secs
I'm also excited that blizzard/bash keeps mentioning that storage is way larger than before.

I love all loot fest kind of game! I will be playing all of them for the next few years. Loot fest games I'm looking forward to: LotR: War in the North,Torchlight 2,Borderlands 2 and of course Diablo 3.

Good point, I recall items glowing, but not to the degree I see in those images. If that level of luminosity is finalized than I may stick with default, especially since I don't have to worry about anyone taking my drops.

+100000 for this! This absolutely should be implemented.
I'm trying to decide whether I want auto-salvage or what hoboman suggests. In almost every situation I would want the former considering that not so many items will fit in the Nephalem Cube at once (6 items by the looks of old screenshots). However it would be devastating if I were vacuuming junk and accidentally clicked on something that I actually wanted to keep. A nice compromise would be a button to automatically move items into the cube, and then a hotkey to automatically salvage everything in it and empty the materials into the inventory. That way I never have to interrupt my monster slaying, but I don't have to worry about accidents either.
true, i agree. sometimes it happens to me. but in my experience of playing RPG they don`t really add auto pick up items. some games with this kind of systems are not popular or private servers commonly. i don`t know but there is a reason why they don`t put auto pick up items. and i think it`s reasonable. correct me if i`m wrong. i will go to classic option

I could see that going wrong in a hurry.. Epic drop? Muscle-memory shift-click salvage. /ragequit. /throw coke bottle at wall. /smash keyboard. /yell NO EVERYTHINGS NOT FINE MOM!!!

I guess I'll give a try to default option and , if I don't like it, swap later on classic approach.
And I think I would rarely use autosalvage (if ever available) since I know I'll do it and too late realize I salvaged something useful...
