Pretty sure this hasn't been discussed much, and if it has, I was completely unable to find it.
But anyways.
So, as some of us remember reading back when D3 was first announced, the guys at Blizzard are planning on closing up the prime evil story.
"We're not saying this is the end of the Diablo universe, but we are trying to bring this storyline to a close. It's not just Diablo III -- we've got plans beyond."
Now, we obviously can't be sure how they'll close up the story arc, but let's assume the heros in D3 manage to kill all of the prime/lesser evil in Hell, since that seems to be the general goal of all of the Diablo games.
But then what?
Will they bring back Diablo once more? Will one of the evils slip away in the fight, to send the hordes of Hell to earth without any infighting with other evils? Or will peoples suspicions come true, and will we finally be fighting off the forces of Heaven?
Or, will we even be fighting to save sanctuary anymore?
Maybe the tables will turn, and in the next installment, we'll be fighting as a demon, trying to enslave the human race.
Honestly, I can't see us fighting Heaven once this story is closed. It has way too much potential to piss off religious groups, even if it's a different vision of Heaven than some envisioned by religious groups.
One of the Evils escaping, or simply reviving them, seems a more likely scenario to me. Perhaps even a character like Bartuc the Bloody, who was working for demons and whatnot, will be reincarnated and gain rulership over the scattered forces of Hell. Or, perhaps the same could happen with his brother Horazon.
Anywho, thoughts?
Basically, the question here is, how do you think Blizzard will close up the current storyline, and what will happen after it's closed?

Actually thats just it. Diablo Mephisto Baal are going to "play their final gambit" so essentially this will kill of diablo baal and mephisto. The other evils i think died when we first killed them (Duriel Belial Azmodan and Andariel) of course we havent killed two of them just yet but we will at least kill belial. Now if you read the lore there are more than just those evils. if you read The Legacy of Blood, there is Xazax or however you spell it, but the idea is that sanctuary has lways had demons running around maybe not as much as in the diablo games but there has always been demon's there and there essentially always will be, so there will always be some sort of "leader" of these demons.
i.e.: Take uhm Seigebreaker Assault Beast. Maybe he doesn't control demons but hes a mini boss. There will always be those "mini bosses" that when diablo dies and all f them die will want to take over. So you will se just a diffrent side of sanctuary.

Well yeah, but that's exactly the point.
Once all of the better known evils are killed, who will take their place as a leader?
I say this because the prime/lesser evils are obvious leaders, so if any were left it would clearly point towards the surviving ones to take the place as the ruler of hell.
But if they're all dead, then who will fill the gap, or will Hell even pose a threat any more.

Just the mini bosses the books share insigh to some evils such as xazax i mean they are there just not prominent for the reson that Diablo can and will crush them like bugs if they oppose him and try to rule themselves.

yeah so like they could just start making up a story that these evils were hiding and they are banding together or something ya know? they could just say five evils were hiding under a sand dune until diablo was dead and when they found his body they decided it was time to come out of hiding and BAM! DIablo 4?...wait what ? diablo... i just realized how do they name it Diablo if he isnt in the game. I guess itll be SANCTUARY. or something. IDK maybe the angels decide to kill you guys finally and then you have to vs the angels

Linear sagas are a TERRIBLE choice for building up fantasy worlds for games. The first games have a nice storyline, but people will have to defeat the villan sooner or later. Then they have to choose - or find a bigger villan every game or make the villan return all the time. Both are very very lame choices.
Just see what they did with Warcraft. Because people ALLWAYS have to defeat a world manace-like villain the storyline became something utterly artificial, with new races poping out of the ground, lots of plot errors and a world that change so fast and in such a chaotic way.
...
I believe they realise how lame is that. After D3 i believe the plot will no longer be based at "save Sanctuary from a massive demon invasion" because theres no way they can push this plot forward. We don't have to fight the leaders and we don't have to play the over the top epic hero all the time.
They could simply make a "spin off". A game that take place in Sanctuary (maybe even before D1's events) and the storyline is based at the conflict between two magi clans for exemple.
Imagine something like StarWars and Forgotten Realms games.
The whole ressurection part will run out of gas eventually. Then again, a diablo game without diablo ain't diablo anymore. I'd love a heaven versus hell story arc, with the Burning Hells trying to overrun the High Heavens.
I guess in another game we could be fighting against people trying to rez the prime evils. Even if they make this their final gamble, they might just lose their power or whatnot. And there will always be people who would want chaos and destruction and would learn of the prime evils, and try to rez them.
And as it's been said, there are lots and lots of other evil demons and whatnot, beyond the big three. Maybe another demon inherits their powers? You never know
Rest assured blizz will think of something!!
They said they wanted to bring the storyline to a close. They didn't mention if that meant the prime evils were going to die, or even lose the fight. What if Diablo 3 ends with the prime evils being victorious. Think of Diablo 2 and how much of that game was spent chasing Diablo's host across the world. I mean at the end going into the expansion we defeated Diablo, but what if we didn't? What would that leave open for subsequent expansions?
Basically, we have no idea what's going to happen.
From when we start Diablo 3 to when we finish and wait impatiently for the first expansion to hit (hopefully there will be more than one), anything can happen.
As the Diablo storyline has proven so far, in the end the good guys actually don't win. They win a battle, but the war continues. The Prime Evils are still around today.

Seems the most likely scenario, I mean fuck, how many times can they justify reviving Diablo to murder him again.
Hell, he was even revived before the events of the first diablo, only to be killed.

Well maybe, after the three prime evils are destroyed, the lesser evils try and take over, but rathma is like "U teh all gon die nows!!!" and the lesser evils are like "oh teh noes!!!!" and then the prime evils are in the abyss but they some how get ahold of enough power that they can come back as TEH EVIL GHOSTS!!!!! and the rathma is like "OH SH**" and then ............................................................
Every Diablo game so long ended on a cliffhanger, which roughly spans the prime evil's plans behind "the great exile" finally coming to fruition. So D3 will wrap up how this plan played out for them, which probably includes things going wrong at one crucial point.
To me it just seems very obvious but I haven't heard it much. In the end of the D3 arc, I think the humans will start to recover their nephalim status (the purpose of the worldstone was in part to obscure humanity's true nature). The heroes will reject the "aid" of demons and angels alike and make a stake for human independence and power, pushing both sides back out of sanctuary. The prime evils might or might not be truly defeated, although I'm going with the later. Killing diablo would be like killing satan, they are the eternal embodiment/symbol of pure evil, it just doesn't happen.
This sets up the franchise nicely down the road to fill in the WoW gap if they so choose, set sometime in the future where it's not surprising to see so many absurdly powerful humans in one area (nephalim.) They can take the simplistic faction vs. faction approach then (nephalims siding with angels or demons a la sin war), or do something more complex and limit those to AI mobs.
Blizzard's next MMO is going to be "more accessible" than WoW, the most successful MMO out there. To me that smells of something not targeted at the gamer geek audience at all (think Sims), so in another 5 years they may want to go back to some fantasy geekness online gaming and this kind of conclusion leaves the diablo franchise as a good option.

The ending of Legacy of Blood pretty much confirms that, Xazax got owned :(.

Buuuut... with Heaven vs Hell, we'd basically be getting another bloody MMO.
Now if we could play a human during the Sin Wars, that would be pretty sweet.
