Bashiok has confirmed that the enchants on weapons will have varying degrees of visual effect to indicate strength of the elemental (and possibly arcane) damage that they are enhanced with.
I hope the variance means fewer visual effects. And to save the really great visual effects only for the super powerful weapons. If a sword does like +2 fire damage, I don't want the whole sword to be up in flames.

Yeah I agree. I played champions of norath alot for a while and the one thing that bugged me was even the early inserts made the sword glow just like the higher inserts on weapons. It would be neat to see a bone helm with like +10 fire dmg make your head appear to be that of say ghostriders. Or a blade that had +10 cold dmg that appeared to be to frozen ice sicles. but +1 fire would be a coal burnt look to it. and +1 cold with have a lil frost on it. If that makes sense.

Agreed.
+1 Poison should have a lil corrosion to it with a few spots of acid, poison, or something of the sort.
+10 Poison would have the poison, etc. dripping from it with a corrosive serration to it.
Love they way you're thinking.

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
Very cool! I wonder if skills will have a similar ramping up of visual cues.

I think it'd be neat if they did something like, a small fire enchant causes the sword to turn red hot, a medium would cause it to turn a brighter red and perhaps glow a little more, then a maximum effect could be the blade is engulfed in flames. (not a ridiculous amount, just enough to cover the blade)
I'm sure they'll try to find a happy medium so not EVERY enchant and level of enchant means walking around with a spotlight in your hand.
I just hope the elements go beyond the basic fire, frost, lightning and poison. I want to see like time warping effects, or armor and weapon disintegration effects, all with their own kind of associative colored effect.

Kinda makes me think of how they should make the Durability work... armor rusting/aging/etc.
If an item breaks it should show like a sword shatter or something close to that.
Would look neat.

We've seen arcane in addition so far, which is not elemental damage. Some people hate the purple colour though I can't really help but adore it since it is my favourite.
EDIT: Weapons with effects such as 150% additional damage to undead may have something interesting that would depict holy damage, disease enchants might look like locusts, and weapons that have a bleeding effect may have blood dripping from the blade perpetually (just from the top of my head since that's one of the cool looking weapon enchants I remember from WoW at the moment).
I don't mind purple edges so much on things. Like, I even liked those orbs you could apply to your hero's weapon in Warcraft 3. And there were these dark orbs that showed a black orb with purple lining orbiting the end of your weapon.
They could take lots of effects found in Paladin aura's and Necromancer curses and apply them to weapons. I'd be very interested to see what they do with this stuff. Still early enough in the process that we may see all kinds of new effects.
