In my opinion the only way to make gold truly valuable would to place less emphasis on runes, gems. Having them drop more frequently. Plus having some killer gear sold from non playing characters, not so much that it would hurt the loot drop system. Having rare, uniques, set items drop even less would help as well (if they will be rare uniques and sets in Diablo 3). As far as battlenet goes, the trade system should purely be gold for gear and gear for gear only, dissallow trading runes and gems. I agree with several posts on this thread about battlenets security needing to be tightening for gold to be worthwhile. Personally, I don't trade on Battlenet, unless I have gave up on a character and decide to have a free for all, dropping items in town for whoever to get. Not exactly trading...heh

All you have to do is look to our real history how gold and silver were valued. I would love to see silver added as well, it is after all the oldest coined money in history since 640 BC in Greece. By adding silver into D3 gold could be made into a rarer precious metal in the game and even more coveted as the premium money sought after. Before inflation here in the US 1 troy oz of gold was coined and valued worth 20 USD, historically there has been a 16:1 average ratio between gold and silver but 1 troy oz of silver has typically been thought of as $1 USD so a 20:1 ratio would be simple for games sake.
All you have to do now is place value on the loot (from jewels to armor worth 'n' amount in gold and silver pieces) and determine the rarity of the gold and silver to be found. It would be nice to not see insane prices in the tens to hundreds of thousands like we saw in D2. In a world where inflation does not exist, prices are far lower. Recall the good ole days our grand parents told us about, things were cheaper. A gallon of gas was a quarter, a pack of cigarettes was a nickel etc.
Also I know the weight system idea didn't fly but it still seemed silly to me one could lug around thousands, to over a million gold pieces. 500 troy ounces is roughly 35 lbs, in reality even the strongest person couldn't carry around a 1000 gold pieces without being encumbered for very long let alone fight evil across the land. It would be nice to see a little more realism even if the weight system isn't applied.
i've never had the time to find out what a soj is could some1 please explain..... ( retarded i am aint i ?)

trading item for item is a key feature in diablo. Big trades... trickin people who were not up to speed on the market. wheeling and dealing!!
o yea and down with d2jsp!
This is the kinda thing there trying to avoid with the new diablo....while on times it was fun to scam i wont deny that....it was pretty ridiculous how easy it was to do or to rip someone off. As for jsp.....I hope that the site isnt the main hub for d3 trading since a lot of the people on there are probably hordng fg to spend on d3....kinda annoying they are gonna be rich in game before its even released. But this is just my opinion.....
gold will only be the currency if they make BoP and BoE, which i would hate to see
Not necessarily. I am sure there gonna come up with a ton of gold sinks like they did in WoW, and didn't they already state there would be no soulbound stuff? correct me if im wrong!!
@Ryu~
You cant really use farmers as an excuse to not have a system of any kind. No matter what game you play..if there is ANYTHING that can be obtained from mobs that is of value and people are after. You will have farmers...only way to fix that is to take away armors gold and anything of value. How lame would that be?
Now as for the gold aspect I dont mind it as long as i can still hustle gear and other items I need or want :). Gold will be fine for early on but when you get up there and get good gear you trade it for other gear or massive piles of gold. So It should be fine..you have something some1 else needs and they have something you need eventhough the value of one item may suck compared to another you will most likely have a trade on your hands. Thats just the way it works and has always worked :).

I wonder how they will implement gold in a way that'll actually be valuable I certainly don't want gold to be used for repairs and stuff cuz that's lame. That's like in D2 Charsi says, "ok to repair this collossus blade it'll cost ya 3 sojs" I think people just end up bartering items instead.

Probably through tons of end game gold sinks like they did in wow. That seems to be the easiest way to do it, along with making it fairly rare at low levels giving you just enough to get by.

500 oz takes up some space and is kind of heavy
IMO

Yeah thats a big possibility but at least its better then having a currency thats uber rare to drop or disappears on you
Seriously. lol
Damm I cant find it now....but in one of the interviews im sure they said they were trying to make gold the main currency.

its not supposed to be a nice game
autostats are rediclous
lack of pots is not welcome
if it aint broke dont fix it! (diablo2)
Obviously there going to come up with a lot more uses for gold then buying gear and items from vendors...........
Well yes you need money for the ale and brothels of course
NATURALLY ;P
NATURALLY ;P lmao.....but seriously they gotta have a reason for gold to be worth something
