Well, since it seems there are so many people that want D3 to look more like D2, and not the way it does now, I have come up with a simple, yet probably somewhat lengthy solution.
Just make a mode, where in the options, a player can choose old style graphics(the more gothic, darker, look), or new style, the way they are making it now.
Comments are nice. And I would love for blizzard to actually read this.
That would be a freaking enormous amount of effort. You do realise that the old graphics are flat images, while the new graphics are 3D polygons? Completely different game engines. It would be like making the game twice.
Edit: Oorr, if you're just talking about 'darker' or 'more colourful', they would still have to make things twice. Or maybe use a 'saturation/gamma modifier', which is what a lot of people have already suggested. But its not just about that. To get the two modes done properly, it would still be a lot of effort.
D2 isn't very gothic at all. Play the game again. I don't see how any of the outdoor areas of any of the Acts can be considered gothic, except maybe the Cathedral in Act 1.
Outdoor areas not looking "Gothic"? You need to look up the definition of the word.
The right word to describe D2 on the whole would be gritty. The indoor areas can be considered Gothic (architecture etc.).
In response to the OP: That would take way too much time and money.

Yep yep.. Also the cave's doesnt feel very gothic either.. only the catacombs, durance of hate and the temples in a3 and chaos sanctuary feel gothic.
D1 is a different thing but in there you all the time underground in some damn catacomb so can't compare.

Exactly my point
A cave can't be Gothic for christ's sake... well unless it's been worked on by artists and has been carved lots of Gothic statues and the ilk
Well most of the grittyness you say is because of that ancient technology when it comes to making graphics and animations
Anyways to the OP.. easiest way is to adjust gamma and contrast.. I did that in D2 a lot, gamma up and whops there goes the frikin darkness and you were actually able to see something
lol, its not the color, but the art direction that's the problem. The current D3 art make everything in it look like toys!
This is the reason I don't support the petition. I'm neutral, and I don't mind some changes. But NONE of the people who have signed the petition so far have given any good reasons at all for changing the overall visual except for the fact that its cartoony..... Which doesn't make any sense at all. And if WoW was never available for kids, I doubt people would call it "cartoony".

If it weren't available for kids, then there'd be even more crying about it looking cartoony, and if it weren't available for kids it wouldn't look cartoony the first place!

Aye I see your point, but what does cartoony mean? Cause I swear, Halo, Oblivion and Crysis are one of the most cartoony games ever (BTW, HALO SUCKS, overhyped piece of FPS.).
Cartoony in my book means exaggeration, be it texture, model size, color, and whatnot. Warcraft style would be a perfect example. Have you seen Samwise's concept art which is what it's based on? Looks like something out of a cartoon. It's all there, exaggerated colours (super bright), sizes (shoulderpads/other details of the armour/weapons the size of a Cadillac), etc. The artpieces that Samwise made for D2, are a bit less cartoony though.
Now I don't know who made this, but it looks a bit off the charts for a Barbarian (well tribal rituals might be appropriate occasions when to wear such armor but seriously on a battlefield )
To get D2 style just saturate your monitor with max colour and alter the gamma.
If it is the grey/dark style of the petition then turn your colour down.
Others can enjoy D3 as intended.

So we've got over the problem of colour in D3. Great. Now let's argue about everything else not yet set in stone and help make this game simply great! Game on.
...Gothic in this thread, Sveto. We have no need to discuss the history of the Gothic people here, seriously. And yay to linking to the most reliable place on the internet popular science pages anyway. You could have done better. Meaning, like, using a dictionary to find out it's definition.

If you're going to make an argument, at least think for five seconds before pressing the post button. What you just said is an incredibly great way to start a flamewar.
It's also been proven as a solution that wouldn't work.
Oakwarrior got the "cartoony" definition down, and it's really sad to see some of that cartoony over exaggerated stuff making it's way in to D3.
Personally I'd be fine with a better texturing of areas (which they'll do because what we see is an alpha) and a proper use of colour and decoration. Lit candles in a Forgotten Catacomb, a green light and using blue for shadowing are the things that bother me.

I ment something different - gothic on its own (apart from the obvious reference to the gothic tribe in Europe) doesn't really mean anything. It's either 'gothic architecture', 'gothic rock' etc. The only place in Diablo 2 that I can call gothic is the Cathedral - there the architecture reminds the look of a real gothic church. Any other 'gothic' places in the game?
Gothic Literature.
It's a sense of mood that the first two games managed to capture incredibly well, even if people didn't spend three minutes looking in to what people were saying and what was going on around them. The books even are filled with gothic overtones, even long before the presence of the three Prime Evils, Sanctuary has always been a sort of melancholy place to be.
gothic architecture was mostly in Diablo 1 because of:
1. Tristram. You only visited it. Gave this medieval feeling we had, was always night (or late since it was always pretty dark -helps keep the darker feeling)
2. The Cathedral. The only place to go. Of which the first 4 levels had a gothic look cause it actually was like a gothic cathedral.
Now Diablo II was far less gothic mostly because it was qiute bigger. Having the same type of environment gets more and more boring when the game is bigger. Only gothic architecture i remember of from Diablo II was:
1. the Tower of the Countess
2. the Monastery
3. the Chaos Sanctuary looked slightly like a defiled gothic cathedral.
notice that Act 2 looked mostly oriental (Agyptian/Indian architecture mostly)
Act 3 was purely south American with the Mayan looking buildings
and act 5 remembered me mostly of some north european cultures that lived mostly in the mountains.
If Diablo III is as big as we except it, having the same colors and style over and over again, mixed up with the static environment, i dont really think it would keep us (the eyes at least) that interested for long. What Diablo III will need is variety. And i think it will have it.
Well I'm confused by those who claim to want more realistic art (I do understand why the odd greenish blue tint is a bit concerning) but say that they want a light radius back. I guess it worked well for the first ones, but this game is a bit different in how it's done, so a light radius wouldn't work out the same way, at least I think. Seriously.

Variety is the spice of life.
Over confidence is the rot.

Now, there are more Gothic styled places, for example Mephisto's Durance, the Chaos Sanctuary, the Countess' Tower.
