The problem is the proportions in the armors and weapons and their lines, being too cartoonish. It's the blocky unrealistic feel and the smiling statues. I get a strong sense from blizzards art direction on WOW, SC2 and Diablo3 that they want to appeal to a very broad audience. That means bringing along the 12 year olds on my trip to Vegas.
Then again, its also a little bit the colours. It's not that colourful. I find WOW's colours bland. You can have colours in a horror movie. Not everything needs to be grey, like some of the fan photoshops of the official screens. It's just bland. Of the fan photoshops the only one that makes sense is:
My top points:
The blocky, cartoonish, kiddie feel.
The bland lighting.
It's designed for kids, above having atmosphere.
What people don't seem to realize is regardless of whether it's cartoony, colorful, or dark gloomy and gothic it will still attract the same audience. MOST gamers are MORE attracted to dark gloomy and gothic, especially little kids. It's simply a question of whether their parents will allow them to play it or not at first glance.

Did you come up with this on your own? That's about the most ridiculous assertion about graphics that I have ever heard.
I agree this is probably the best interpretation of how Diablo 3 should look like in a dungeon or tomb. It has the light radius and it doesn't have that noise effect.
OMG so darkness was the answer this entire time! OMG I CANT BELIEVE YOU FIGURED THIS OUT!? Did you get any help at all??? because I think all credit should go to you. Our lord and savior who figured out the answer to the "graphical trouble" we have all been facing.

Can I worship you? Please?
Not getting enough attention at home from mommy and daddy eh?
It's funny how he says the original picture is "designed for kids" above having atmosphere.
I wonder when visibility equated to it being 'designed for kids'. Half Life 2 is a pretty bright game, too. Takes place in the daytime, mostly. I guess it's designed for kids because you can actually see what you're firing your gun at. I can hardly make out what the hell is going on in the bottom picture.
The light radius was something you got from items. Soem items bestowed an increased light radius and allowed you to see further. This was more useful for the ranged classes.
I think why they are cartoon-izing it is this to attract more people, keep from getting sued for putting too much gore (Manhunt?) Parents will have blizzard by the balls when they see their kiddies playing a game with nude corpses.
Basically, over the last decade, we have become sensitive, quick to judge, and point fingers to find quick solutions (parents blaming video game companies for their kids going berzerk rather than looking at their inability to raise their own kids). We thrive on drama, conflict, and attention, we love glamour.

Right and the fact that a monster ripped off a characters head and you saw the blood oozing out of the now mangled corpse is a tribute to the fact that they are "cartooning" it right? Or maybe its just a style of 3D rendering they used. You have to remember that Diablo 2 was not fully rendered in 3D and the character models had no... real look to them. You enter a whole new world when you go to 3D.
Did you come up with this on your own? That's about the most ridiculous assertion about graphics that I have ever heard.
Wow way to be mature about it dick. That being said I can honestly say I don't know a single person who wouldn't prefer a game like diablo to be dark than full of fucking rainbows and neon green do you?
In all seriousness, the game looks GREAT. The gameplay and physics are stunning, the skills and characters are well thought out and smooth (beginning to like the witch-doctor a lot more after watching the trailer a few more times). But the simple fact remains that the game would look THAT MUCH BETTER if it looked at least somewhat similar to the edited fan pictures. And why the fuck not? Everyone who argues against it has terrible unjustified reasons for doing so..
"The game will be set back 2 years" what makes you think blizzard can't add shades and contrasts to it just as easily and quickly as the editor of the images did?
"Lets wait and see what the game looks like when it comes out" this IS what it will look like thats why they're SHOWING it to us. Lets NOT wait and see... How about we voice our opinions about it now and maybe on some stroke of luck blizzard will change it BEFORE it comes out like they did with SC2
"Its 20 years after the evils were vanquished and the world is brighter" Sure as hell doesn't look that way with zombies and plagues stripping the colorful rainbow infested lands, doesn't quite mix no matter how you slice it.
Here's an idea how about someone voices their opinion as to why they think the colors and cartoony glowy fuzziness of this game looks nice to them as is?
Although on the other hand the thing I don't think is as big a deal as some people make it is the armor, it's only bulky in one image. In the gameplay trailer is looks fairly nice and quite true to diablo, it's just 3D..
what noob, do you even know what cartoony is?
Do you even know what blocky is?
Here is what cartoony is:
and here is what blocky is, or even cartoony for that matter:

Diablo 3 is graphically and artistically great, there needs to be variety in the game, instead of only plain and dark areas!
+Wouldn't it be better and more interesting if from a sunny beautiful day, mist starts covering the screen, rain starts falling, thunders and lightning striking and it starts to darken, instead of constant dark!?

The same audience? I beg to differ. The game has an audience that is much bigger than "COLLECT ALL THE LOOT YOU POSSIBLY CAN RAAH". While I fall into this category, I also fall into the mood category as well.
I fall into that category specifically for Diablo and Mario.

OK, what the fucking problem with rainbows? It's a rainbow on a WATERFALL. It's a realistic optical and meteorogical phenomena.
Rainbows weren't created on Carebears or something that. For example, in ancient Nordic mythos, rainbows were the bridge that connected Midgrad with Asgard. On the China, it's a slit on the sky...
It doesn't matter if it's realistic. There are demons and undead terrorizing the land (more like standing around like they did in TQ to be honest :|). Rainbows are a sign of hope, love, peace, etc. Demons and skeletons do not mix with rainbows.
If they wanted it to be realistic then they wouldn't make a typical mistake like... making the rainbow colors upside down. I can hear it now, though. "It's a video game." YOU'RE RIGHT. IT IS. IT IS A VIDEO GAME CALLED DIABLO 3 (Diablo is the Lord of Terror) THAT IS FILLED WITH DEMONS, UNDEAD, EXPLODING WIZARDS, BIG MONSTERS THAT EAT PEOPLE, ETC. Rainbows don't fit.

Rainbows are not a sign of jack shit. They're an optical phenomenon.
If you find trouble dissociating them from carebears and cartoons then you're nothing but a child with childish thoughts and childish ideas about the world.
tbh while I think the models look slightly too blocky and cartoony, its not that big a deal really, and its almost certainly not going to change because Blizz won't go and redo it all. I'm just being realistic. It is a shame though because those railings look totally uninspired, doen't look like they researched it at all. I've certainly never seen a railing like that, and I sure as hell wouldn't expect to see such a lumpy, blocky railing in a cathedral - which usually have the most intricate and stunning architecture I have ever seen.
Like the OP states, the brightness of the scene is what is amiss. The fact that in the underground dungeon there is a huge amount of random green light that seemingly comes from all directions, leaving us without any dark corners at all, just doen't sit right. Not a big deal outside though to be honest, it actually looks dark and moody when the rain etc kicks in, im betting it will be even better at night time.
Sure as hell hope that night time looks decntly dark though, not like in WoW where I could hardly tell the difference except for a very slight blue cast because of the moon...

All I know is, as it stands it reminds me enough of WoW to make me not want to play WoW lol.. which is strange somehow. THe desecration of diablo 3! Now when i see WoW i see Diablo 3, and i am at a loss.
