I think there should not only be side quests. But ever changing side quests, so that every time you play the game it would never be the same. Wouldn't be too hard to program random side quests with new npc dialog every time. Although they may run out of idea's at some point.
That sounds like a fantastic idea, except some people would complain that its not fair that one person got some awesome item from a quest that they werent lucky enough to get.

Well, I could even talk seriously and personally about sex without saying something akin to, "My girlfriend and I have had sexual intercourse not once, not twice, but thrice. During these times I had inserted my penis in and out of her vagina and ejaculated accordingly. I gently sobbed afterwards while she held me in her arms. This has all brought us closer together."
There weren't any side quests in Diablo 2 & LoD because side quests in the form in which we're used of thinking and imagining them were not needed.
The basic point of side quests is to somewhat cause a feeling of choice and ununiformity.
Whether the point of side-quests is to 'relax' the player and provide a small rest from pursuing the 'boring' and sometimes long-winded storyline and thus provide a renewn feeling of action and suspense or it's used as a sort of 'comedy relief' or perhaps to incorporate some elements that weren't fit in the game in time or just couldn't be placed in a manner that would coexist with the main concept, I think it should seek it's place in a game other than Diablo.
OK, nothing really wrong with Diablo having side quests, but if perfectionism is what you're after, why clutter menus with logs that are long, difficult to decipher and quite fury-inspiring.
OK, still not too much of a problem right? They could be simplified, but that would of course cause them to dumb-down and make the quests look like no-choice yes or die scripts ( or both choises) that were written by a two-year-old.
You can't deny that there are many games that have really worthless quests that don't thrill, just the opposite. I believe it is because of the unimagination and incompetence of the creators to challenge themselves further and better their work, instead giving up.
If it's simply put 'fun' what you're after then find it in a different game. Diablo 2, and 3 I hope, were made in such a fashion that you never lose sight of what you seek. The constant chases in Diablo 2 serve to lead you, not to push you away from playing or cause constant stress: "Oh, when will this level end ?".
No, Diablo is fun to play by all means, it's just that the reason it had such success is because of the hard work and game design of the team who loved doing what they did. Careful planning, storytelling, like a brilliantly composed play are the things that provide the level of immersement and wholehearted pure fun (which in turn makes the player/consumer want more). If they didn't really bother with the work, why should I be obliged to appreciate it?
Back on topic: say no to side-quests in D3. No to their form where they are the type already seen in many other games. They don't have to be 'officialy' side quests that don't affect the ending, but as seen in D2: One 'quest' that gives way and evolves into a second one that is different, yet incorporated within the story is what they should continue doing.
Music is made out of beeps and insignifant sounds. It's only when blended into cohesion that they produce the effect known as : "Shit, that's tight!". A bad side quest is like an off-key acord. A well written book for example has many elements fitted and it's only together that they form good reading material. Many thoughts, plots and ideas sound clattered, but with a well defined story that clamps them together or perhaps with the opposite- a chaotically laid story with many samples, yet all bridged together will make what we want Diablo to be... Art of the highest order. Not just the one you say wow when you see it, but the one that makes you want to scream, explode, express, let it carry you...
That's what i want from Diablo 3 when it comes out. That's all...
EDIT: Shit, I just read what I wrote. My fuckin' cousin was here playing her fuckin' Royskopp all day long. i feel fuckin' exausted with that free yourself shit. Emotions were meant to be expressed. Fuck no. It just makes you sound girly.

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees

I would love to see more side quest, i mean just imagine how long D2 would have been without them.
Though at the same time i would want to see a more enriched Storyline and a solid plot, Ive already seen what a game of endless fillers look like( Bad )

side quests the way they were in Diablo 1. Random generated from a nice, big quest pool. I really loved the Skeleton King quest chain (it led to Lachdanan - priceless).
dont you guys miss that too?
That was personally my favourite quest. I was always nervous going into that tomb! :P:D

i think it was Pardo that said that there will be more side-quests with Diablo III and except the main quest, most will include class rewards (thats what i got, i might be wrong).
I find the sub stories very interesting, though, especially the random quest pool from Diablo 1. Liked all quests in there and i hope theres some equally cool voice acting with the Diablo III dialogues and quests too.

Any poll adding more content without drawbacks will have massive support.
A good example of side quests that effect the world is fable 2. They said that theres this
merchant camp and in it are troubled merchants. U do the quest it eventually becomes a
bundling town. If you refuse to do it, it just becomes a dead camp in the middle of no where.
