I don't know about that. Lots of people play that Eastern Sun mod thing.
Exactly. Median 2008 is another very popular mod.

I do not think an world editor will dampen the game, i think it could add a lot, I love adventures, making them playing them, editors allow you to do that. Some poeple complain some games have a weak story, editors allow you to make what you feel is a better one. Or if you felt there was too much story and not enough fighting they allow you to rectify that too.
I agree wholeheartedly. The problem with some games is that, once you finish it, that's it. You can play through the game again as another character, but the story and layout of cities and such remains the same. At the very least, mods allow for more replay value, with a new perspective on a familiar game.
I hate to keep using this example, but Neverwinter Nights illustrates this fact perfectly. As I said before, the game itself is great, however there are only so many times you can play it before it gets old. If left by itself, Neverwinter Nights would have died ages ago, but thanks to the modding community, the game is still popular and very active several years later. If I remember correctly, there is even a community-made expansion pack, and many of those mods would not have been possible without the use of the editor that was included with the game.
Didn't i state that earlier? You're thinking too narrow-minded on the possibilities of what it could bring. Sure, idiots can hop on the thing and randomly smack the keyboard with their faces until something magically compiles together and they ship it out to the masses. But there are other rpg/action games that use an editor, and people make use of it extremely well (like i said, NW). Also, there were plenty of hack n' slash-ish maps developed using WC3.
Legend of Magnador and Heart of Winter are two that I can think of, both of which are extremely well rounded and constructed with awesome storylines and customized models.
Possibilities? Have you ever played WC3 from its release? All they needed for the DotA conspiracy was major micro-units with abilities AKA heros. And what's Diablo about? Heros. Alright, probaly I'm going into too much RTS here, but still, you add a program with many if not limitless capabilities you might jsut be replicating WC3's DotA
I'm sorry if I'm sayign some redundant things here, since I have not read everyone's posts.
Diablo is blizzard's non-modable type of game. They even said so in the diablo 3 panel discussion. They were not focusing on helping anyone with content such as mods, let alone map editors, due to the combination of fixed and random things in the game. When you make a game, you have to set limits... you can't try to implement every possible feature. One has to keep in mind the general design ideas of the game or game series, and follow that. For diablo's case, one of those ideas means staying with randomized dungeons and drops, with fixed titlesets, NPCs, and quests, and not spending another 6 months trying to implement a lousy scenario editor just because they can.
Wow there are a lot of ignorant people on this message board. For one, Titan's Quest did and Sacred 2 will have a world editor and they are of the same genre, it's not an "RTS" exclusive. Seconaly, Diablo 2 was very open ending to modding, Blizzard left this a very user friendly and easily assisible features, there was also an unnofficial map editor. There were hundreds of mods, custom maps and total conversions available. Check out Phrozen Keep... I for one created one of these TC called Hell Unleashed with dozens of custom maps, features, monsters, bosses, etc. For those of you who said keep Diablo 3 clean without mods and editors like Diablo 2 is extremely ignorant and also shuns the modding community like myself who dedicated countless hours creating mods and maps for Diablo 2. Do your homework before saying Blizzard didn't offer this with Diablo 2. Just because you don't want to see a map or modding editor don't delve into false facts when there were numerous tools available for Diablo 2 modding and editing, which was taken advantage by a very different and wide fan base. The only thing that held my interested in Diablo 2 for as long as it did was the ability to create custom mods for people. Otherwise Diablo 2 would have died for me probably 6 months after LoD was released.

There is a big difference between offering and allowing. They had the D2 files open for editing but they NEVER offered any help or support on the matter. I dont shun modders, some of the most fun I've had in D2 was when playing mods but I wouldnt wanna see Blizz assisted modding with editors and whatnot.
It won't detract from the experience of other players, and could add immense replayability to the game. Personally, I'm surprised they have not jumped on the idea.
It is an entirely optional program, it's not like you have to use it, and eve nif someone did make some new content, you would have to download it before it could apply, it's not some hack character editor.
Someone cant just go make their character godly and PK you, you would have to download the modifications before they could apply, like downloading new maps for WCIII. If you don't have them, you can't play them.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

Creating a static map means you have more control over what goes in it, more intelligent placement of monsters/traps, better for gauntlets and bosses especially. Diablo 2's non random dungeons often were more interesting to me then the random one. Chaos Sanctuary and Baal's Throne Room are good examples of this. They are generally a lot more epic/challenging when you can create your own layout and set up your challenges/obstacles accordingly. I am a fan of both random and pre-set dungeons and Diablo 2 did make use of both, just a lot more random areas and pre-set dungeons were often smaller, but they certainly weren't lame...
People would abuse it. One could make a huge map that is entirely open, completely packed with zombies. Send in a Witch Doctor and send out a swarm that spreads from zombie to zombie until they all die. Crazy experience.

---- And the evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew! ----
Yah no shit, eh. Donno why people would say "no" if they don't want to play custom maps or mods, it's simple, don't play em and just play the normal campaign over and over, as millions of others players prolly will, it wont take away from your experience. It just allowws the modding and editing community in D2 to retain their fan-base who enjoy producing their own maps, mods and campaigns for themselves and there friends. It doesn't take anything away from the game, it keeps things from getting redunant for people like me who found regular Diablo 2, boring, tedious, repetetive and easy.
If you don't like it, don't use it or play mods, it doesn't ,eam their shouldn't be one to entirly screw over the modding community who has been eagerly awaiting Diablo 3 to make their own sequels to their d2 mods. such as my hell unleashed 2 I am planning, official modding tools or an editor would make my life a lot simplier in doing such a thing, along with many others such as Merdian and Eastern Sun creators.
As long as official campain characters cannot be used in custom maps or mods, just have a seperate ladder for any custom mods outside the normal game or not allow them on battle.net all together
Yeah.
Let's think about it for a second.
The maps in Diablo are RANDOMLY generated.
And obviously, an editor for randomly generated maps is possible, right?
You cannot use a map editor with D3, and there is no reason (imo) to want to.
Blizzard will create amazing content for D3, no doubt. If you're a purist, and you want to just play what falls out of Blizz's content factory, knock yourself out.
At your most critical, that should leave you neutral. If you think that this would be a bad idea, congratulations, you are part of the 99% of people who would use it wrong anyway. But the quality of user-created content from people who are truly devoted could be insane. I guess I have to remind some of you that Blizzard is staffed by human beings - you know, the same sort you see every day, walking around. Someone not on Blizzards payroll could still make one of the best Diablo dungeons to roll out - and I would like to play that dungeon.
So screw you for having zero foresight and imagination.

Snap.
? Having user created maps/drops would make the game completely unbalanced. Unless you had it so that your character could never join another persons user created game. I could put epic lewts and dungeons right next to each other and just MF all day long. This is something that would be done on like OPEN Battlenet then it would be cool.
Also screw me for not agreeing with you? You would make a great politician.

No, I didn't say screw you for not agreeing with me, but rather for lacking an imagination. User-created content would be for the fun of a new, exciting or otherwise unique dungeon crawl. Introducing persistent user-created loot would be retarded. Nobody is talking about that - of course people would exploit it. Honestly. Hey everyone, look at the strawman.
If you didn't want to play the user created crawls, you wouldn't have to - it's a beautiful thing, free will.
Not ALL maps in Diablo are randomly generated, the majority are yes but all the major maps such a boss maps were pre-set and not randomly generated. Whats wrong with wanting ton create a mods that utilizes both randomly generated maps and pre-set created maps? I took advantage of both in Hell Unleashed and it worked fine. People tended to enjoy my pre-created maps more because of the placement of strategic placement of named/champs/bosses/traps ...
Yes Diablo has randomly generated maps but not all of them are and they are only random to an extent anyway, just because their is a world editor to create your own mods or campaigns doesn't mean a person is going to create every single map... If you don't like it then don't play custom mods but don't be dumb and try and rip into the modding community based on short-sited ignorance.
I can can count half a dozen mods for Diablo 2 that utilized the map editor and modding tools that were a hell of a lot better then the easy, tedious, boring Diablo 2 1.10
Exactly. Median 2008 is another very popular mod.
