People played D1 because 1) The environment was really well done, much better than D2 and especially D3. 2) It was truly challenging unlike D3 which is just a gear check.
Could we please knock it off with the bullshit ....PLEASE!!!
God damn Blizzard North and these fail exploits. Diablo 1 will never be like Diablo 0. It's just a scam to get people to buy the game. I bought this piece of crap 15 years ago and I want a refund.
What kind of developers would miss something like that?
Yup, I'm so sure Diablo 2 is so much better. It totally wasn't 12 years of doing the same thing we're now doing in Diablo 3. Oh wait, in Diablo 3 I actually do more than run the same boss over and over and actually get to see more of the terribly bland terrain, because Diablo 2 was never just as bland with endless dim dungeons to explore! Or a bright jungle with cartoonish pygmies running around. Yup, Diablo 3 is just so terrible since you can mess around with different stuff without having to make another character or break out a third party character editor.
You have made your point so well. Everyone is just blind to how horrible this is to be playing Diablo 2.5...er, I mean Diablo 3.
The one thing I will say is a legitimate complaint is that PVP has taken longer to come out than most people expected. I hope that's because they're putting a lot of effort into it, so it's not going to be as... rudimentary as D2's PVP was. I'm sure it'll take a lot of balancing once it's released regardless, but at least they're designing proper arenas or what have you.
Still, Diablo has always been primarily a PVE game so I don't really mind immensely.
People played D1 because 1) The environment was really well done, much better than D2 and especially D3. 2) It was truly challenging unlike D3 which is just a gear check.
LOL... wow... um, what exactly was hard about D1? Or D2? Not sure which you mean but either is ridiculous. You didn't have to farm in D2 EVER you could beat the whole game wearing ANYTHING, with ANY skill combination. You spammed like 3 buttons max.
I did like the atmosphere in Tristram and the early parts of D1 better than D2, I will say. Up to about the Butcher. That's the most memorable Diablo experience for me. But in terms of gameplay... just lightyears behind.
People played D2 because 1) The items and skills were interesting. You could make all different kinds of unique builds with your character. 2) There was a level cap that wasn't easy to reach, so people had a desire to hit 99. 3) D2 had ladders that created some level of consistent competition.
1) I think the main difference is D3 is much harder than D2 so you can't get away with sub-optimal builds anymore. Sure you could beat D2 with anything but the different builds certainly weren't balanced. I'm hoping more builds will be viable in the next patch, but at least from a DH's perspective there are numerous interesting builds in D3 of varying viability levels.
2) Man you're not going to convince me that that boring pointless grind to 99 was in any way good gameplay. It required NO SKILL WHATSOEVER it was just a long, long tedious grind for no reason. Well for some reason - it was to give you something to do because there was nothing left to do in that game lol.
3) Eh, I never gave a toss about ladders, maybe they'll make those again. Level and gear up all over again all the time? Sounded boring as hell to me.
D3 is nothing more than an item farm. All the other things that made D1 and D2 fun are gone. The items and skills are incredibly monotonous, there's no endgame progression and the environment / story is way too cartoonish and bland. Believe it or not, the other parts of the franchise are what made finding items so much fun. But with D3 all you're left with is killing monsters and either getting good loot or bad loot.
That being said... it's not like D1 and D2 would be wildly successful if released today. The style that was unique back then, is more common today. But still, those 2 games are better than D3, without a doubt.
Diablo was never just about grinding items, that's where the developers failed with this game.
I dunno what planet you're on but grinding items is 100% of the gameplay in every Diablo game. Where else did you get your gear? From raids? Heroic dungeons? Conquest Point vendor?
Apparently you consider grinding from 80ish to 99 through constant Baal runs super interesting gameplay though so maybe that's what you're thinking of. Dunno what to say about that.
Yeah, I'm putting all this down to wildly inaccurate nostalgia.
I'm not sure how this site functions daily with blue posts being really scarce. Every other day we have the "booster pack" giveway usually tagged with someones daily version of a calculator. I understand this is not Curses' problem because there is nothing worth talking about. I check this site everyday, well.. I used to but now its more of a once a week thing because I'll atleast get one day of worthy front page news.
Diablo III, 1.0.4.666 (death of the game). Making elite/champion packs not reset their health. Someone should seriously be injured for that change. People wanted the game to be difficult, now Blizzard is making it a lot lot lot easier than it already was. Don't forget about giving more items per pack also. Now you can enjoy doing the same routine over and over, but now you get a lot more junk items to vendor or salvage. More trips to the town fellas! Keep that Act III farming going strong.
Diablo III is a ship that has more holes than plugs. It started off very strong, so we know marketing did their job. Maybe its because I'm older. I played the crap out of Diablo 1, Diablo 2 but looking back I just don't know how I did it.
Do you know whats the issue with D3 and every new game coming out these days?
More people have access to the internet, and sadly they are most of the time loudly trolls, most of the online communities are tainted by this people and they end up poisoning all the constructive post and forums.
I think I know where the nostalgia is coming from.
The gloomy atmosphere from Diablo 2 is gone. Mostly due to lesser music-artwork synch, in my opinion. The scenery in D3 is great, but I don't think the sound fits it well. I remember that I use to play D2 only for the feel of playing a gloomy, a bit scary dungeon crawler, the gear was never that important to me. The quests were great, the lore was not "in your face"... The whole game was mysterious. There are the same reasons I still play D2. The only multiplayer in D2 that I did, was with my friend over LAN, never through battle.net. We would be in the same room, chating IRL, now we have to have headphones, skype, good internet connections etc. That is what I miss the most...
Never said D2 was hard. I said D1 was. Yeah, there are exploits, but you still have to plan out what you want to do and use stat points correctly. And it can definitely be difficult if you play it straight up.
You missed the point though, the fact is that you can't beat D3 if you're undergeared. That's why it's a raw gear check. The mechanics of the game don't allow you to kill enemies without having the necessary gear to do so. You can't beat Ghom in A3 undergeared for example, it's not possible. That's why it's a false difficulty, it's 100% based on gear. Not saying D1 was great, but it was closer to a true difficulty than D3 is.
D3's skill system is awful. It's not that there aren't enough viable builds, even if there were, there aren't even enough skills to choose from and they aren't interesting for the most part. Part of it is that you use 6 skills at a time but it's also the rune system which severely limits the amount of unique skills. Also, the inifinite respec destroys any feeling of investment the player has in their character. The affixes in this game are so homogenous as well, none of the items are interesting or exciting.
The grind to level 99 was important because it gave the player something to do in the game. You can say it was pointless or whatever, but having a level 99 meant that you invested a lot of time into the character. And if you didn't care about ladders you probably didn't play the game very much, the competitve aspect of ladders keeps the game interesting.
You seem too focused on the bells and whistles honestly... like a lot of players these days. Interesting gameplay and ARPGs don't exactly go together. Every ARPG is extremely repetitive, MMOs and MOBAs have much better gameplay. D3 tried to improve on this and they did, but destroyed everything else in the process. As I've said, the combat in D3 is honestly the only solid thing about the game, and it's not even that amazing.
There's a certain audience that has always enjoyed ARPGs because they involve planning / thinking about your stat choices and build. ARPGs should NEVER be a 100% item farm like D3 is. This game has been simplified to extremes, and has no ties to games where you had to plan out your build / stat choices and find out what works best.
A large portion of D2 was your character's build and how you maximized the skills you had. Obviously the goal is to get the best items, but the point is that you're getting specific items to augment your skills. That doesn't exist in D3 at all. The closest thing is like getting %CC gear to make Big Stinker / Burning Dogs CC constantly.
Everything has been homogenized and tied to weapon damage, the same 1H that's great for a Barbarian is great for a Wizard... the only difference is the primary stat. It shouldn't be difficult to see that they made this game as simple as they possibly could.
To me Diablo 3 is alive. I am looking forward to try out the next patch.
And its good news they are making it "easier" if thats what the results are going to be (who knows, they change it for a reason and we cant say for sure what is and what isnt until we tried the changes).
I am not here very often, Im more active on other sites and I tend to play D3 at least once a day. Its very hard to get gold and good gear, so if this patch is indeed a "easier" gameplay change, I will finish inferno
The one thing I will say is a legitimate complaint is that PVP has taken longer to come out than most people expected.
The only thing ever said by Blizzard regarding the timeframe for PvP was "before the end of the year." If, based on that, anybody expected anything other than late fall at the earliest, and a most likely date of Christmas, they don't know Blizzard very well.
Well, I haven't played in about 3 weeks or so and I'm sad about it. I hope 1.0.4 makes the game fun. I hope pvp isn't too far off either.
This is the type of attitude that most whiners should have. Not happy with the game anymore? Go do something else and come back when it sound interesting enough, don't come up with a million reasons as to why the game sucks and whatnot.
Honestly, most people that complain non-stop and still play from time to time remind me of girls that get beaten/cheated/whatever horrible thing that can be done in a relationship by their companions, bitch about it to friends but never seem to quit the asshole.
I find myself bored a little after completing the game with my Monk, so I stopped playing as much. So, I'm now having fun leveling alts, laughing all the way at my awesomeness from purchasing Reduced Level Requirement weapons. I know, cheezy right? I don't care, I have fun and so should you, whatever which way you have it. If its not with this game, don't bore people to death with this rant crap.
I actually stopped playing D3 a while back. *gasp* Yes, I did. Well, I paid for the game so I guess I have the right not to play it. I still come to this site though, checking up on details.
At present I'm waiting for GW2, and I'm going to play the living hell out of it. Saying 'blah, it's a dumb game', or 'enjoy your fail game' is just ignorant babbling. The BWEs are brilliant, and I plan on playing for a long time to come.
However, there will be a day when I'll want something different, need a break from that game. Then, when D3 1.1.5 (or whatever) is out, I will return. I plan on keeping my D3 version up to date, and I can't wait for the day when I come back and find an improved game. I might even start a new character, just to see how much has changed, and the thought of it really excites me.
If you read this and shake your head, wondering, it's true, a person can enjoy and like two games, even at the same time. I plan on enjoying GW2 and D3 for many years to come, and try some other games in between.
I quit D2 the same way, because I saw the strong game underneath, and just like D3, I know and trust that on that solid foundation a brilliant game will one day attest to this fact.

What? It's not common for people to play more than one game at the same time? Shit, I must be weirdo. At one time, I was playing D2, Ragnarok Online, Bioshock, Pes2010 or 11 don't remember, and flash game on kongregate. Whatever I was in the mood for.

I'm merely mocking the strange behavior some people tend to employ. Where a person will bring the name of a game into a conversation and everyone will instantly bash it. A phrase they enjoy most of all is "enjoy your flawed game, can't wait for the moaning to start. see you again soon". It's replies like these that makes it seem like you can only enjoy one game at a time, and usually that game is always one being spoken off, no exceptions.
I would much rather enjoy various meals, than eating the same thing day after day.
What a sucky game, I only have 200 hours /played time, which is like 10 times more than almost every other game I've played! QQQQQQQQQQQQQ
If you don't like the game, just stop playing and leave. Bye. Don't flood forums with those dumb "game sucks" "game is dead" topics, because honestly who gives a crap?
I do. And apparently you do too since you took the time out of your precious gaming to post that.
You obviously don't get the point. Diablo is not supposed to be a months or weeks game. Diablo was always about longevity and replayability, which Diablo 3 obviously lacks right now. Be honest with yourself, would you be still be playing this game in 5 years?

Hopefully caps helps emphasize some things.
Wtf did they fix? It's getting worse and worse and it is directly correlating with the significant drop in d3 players. Not even PVP will save the game. If you think it will, then you're in for a huge disappointment. Because that's the same as saying that that will be the only end-game. That is sad.
On a personal note I play D3 like I did D2, actually more. D2 to me I beat it, (not mastered) but I got to a point where I beat Hell, had a nice set and I was done, after that every couple months I'd play again for a few weeks here and there. D3 so far I haven't beat still but when I do I'm sure it will go the same, I'll pick it back up from time to time.
I wouldn't personally say it's dead, I can see your reasoning of why you think that and would say that but there are still enough people playing and I'm enjoying it (and the exciting patches coming) to say it's not dead for me.
Could we please knock it off with the bullshit ....PLEASE!!!
Time for a reality check.
